Pure-Blood
-
<!-- At least one paragraph -->
+
Pure-blood is a term for a person whose ancestors are all witches and wizards. However, most pure-bloods will have a Muggle somewhere on their family tree, although they generally deny it. Most pure-blood families are inter-related due to the struggle to maintain blood purity by only marrying other pure-bloods. It is assumed that most Slytherins and Death Eaters are pure-blooded, with a notable exception being Lord Voldemort. By the events of the Harry Potter series, the pure-blood families were in decline. Ron Weasley and his family and Draco Malfoy and his family are two of the few pure-bloods left. Though, however, the Weasleys are referred to as blood traitors and their status of being a pure blood is often questioned - usually by the Malfoys.

Sub-section 2
+
Half-Blood
-
<!-- At least one paragraph -->
+
Half-blood is a term for a person who is born to one magical parent and one non-magical parent. Some examples of half-bloods are Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter.  A half-blood may have a muggleborn parent and a pure-blood parent as well.
 +
Half-Blood, during the time in which the Death Eaters ruled the Ministry of Magic, was considered a classification of the wizards and witches. Another good example of half-blood is Severus Snape, Potions and Defense against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. His mother's last name was Prince, hence he called himself the Half-Blood Prince, which is also the name of the sixth Harry Potter book.

Muggle-born
-
<!-- At least one paragraph -->
+
Muggle-born is a term for a witch or wizard whose parents are both Muggles. There is a lot of prejudice against Muggle-borns in the Wizarding World, especially amongst pure-bloods. This dates back to at least the medieval era, as Salazar Slytherin notoriously despised Muggle-borns. Wizards hostile to Muggle-borns use the term Mudblood, which is a derogatory name for a Muggle-born witch or wizard. It is first used in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by Draco Malfoy to Hermione Granger. The term becomes more clear as it is used more in the series by Draco Malfoy and various Death Eaters.

Death Eaters
-
<!-- At least one paragraph -->
+
The Death Eaters are a group controlled by Lord Voldemort. Their enemies are the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore's Army, and at times the Ministry.  The Death Eaters are anti-muggle and racist even though some of the members are half-blood.

Order of the Phoenix
-
<!-- At least one paragraph -->
+
The Order of the Phoenix is an organization fighting against Voldemort and his Death Eaters. It was founded by Albus Dumbledore during the First Wizarding War and was revived for the Second War. The Order was introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and has remained an integral part of the books ever since. The Order often comes to Harry's aid during battles and was present at the Battle of Hogwarts and the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. The Order communicates through the use of Patronuses which was taught to them by Dumbledore. Members are required to have left school before they can join.
 +

 +
Marauders
 +
The Marauders were a group of friends at Hogwarts who developed The Marauder's Map. Remus Lupin was a werewolf, and when his friends learned this, they worked to become illegal Animagi so they could accompany Lupin when he transformed at the full moon without being in danger themselves. James Potter's Animagus was a stag (the same animal his son Harry's Patronus took the form of), Sirius Black's Animagus was a dog, and Peter Pettigrew's Animagus was a rat (which he later used to disguise himself as Ron Weasley's pet rat).
 +

 +
Dumbledore's Army
 +
Dumbledore's Army was a group of Hogwarts students who wanted to learn Defense Against the Dark Arts from a real teacher since Dolores Umbridge (their Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for that year) would not teach them any real defensive magic. Harry Potter was the leader/teacher of Dumbledore's Army because he had been able to defend himself against Lord Voldemort the previous year. The group was named Dumbledore's Army because the Ministry of Magic feared that Albus Dumbledore was creating an army to rise up against them. The DA was eventually disbanded when Umbridge discovered them, as they were operating illegally. They also unnofficially return when the Carrows teach at the school and Defense Against the Dark Arts is turned into Dark Arts. Since Harry is not at Hogwarts at the time, they may not of actually taught defense, but they often pulled stints like putting graffiti up on the wall saying "Dumbledore's Army still recruiting."

Harry married Ginny Weasley (b. circa 1982; Hogwarts, 1992) (who he first dated in Half Blood Prince before Dumbledore's death and reunited after the war against Voldemort)

-

-
Harry Potter: Became Head of the Auror Office after Kingsley Shacklebolt became Minister of Magic

-

-
* Ginny Potter: Played professional Quidditch before taking a position at the ministry and had three children:

-
** James Sirius (b. circa 2005; Gryffindor, 2016?): The oldest son of Harry and Ginny Potter, named for Harry’s father and godfather. He seems to have inherited a bit of Weasley – interrupting his cousins while snogging (DH/e) – as well as a bit of his namesake, stealing the Marauder’s Map from his father’s desk (BLC).

-
** Albus Severus (b. 2006; Hogwarts, 2017): Middle child of Harry and Ginny Potter, named for Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape (the two greatest Headmasters of Hogwarts (DH/e)). Albus is the only of Harry's children to have Lily's (Harry's mothers) green eyes (DH/e) When he begins Hogwarts he’s quite nervous about being sorted into Slytherin, thanks in large part to the goading of his older brother James; Harry reassures him that the Sorting Hat will take his choice into account (DH/e).  Albus is the only one of Harry's children that knows that the hat took Harry's choice.

-
** Lily Luna (b. 2008; Hogwarts, 2019): Youngest child and only daughter of Harry and Ginny Potter, named for Harry’s mother, Lily. Like her mother twenty-eight years earlier, Lily was jealous as she stood on Platform 9 ¾, watching her older brothers go off to Hogwarts, she still had to wait 2 more years before she was to head off on the Hogwarts Express with them (DH/e).

-
According to Dumbledore, the Dursleys are Harry Potter's only living relatives (PS1). We do know a little about the rest of the clan, but not much.

-

-
Charlus Potter: Rowling's Black Family Tree mentions a Charlus Potter who was married to Dorea Black (1920-1977), a grandchild of Phineas Nigellus Black (BFT). They had one son (unnamed) (BFT).

-
It is doubtful that Charlus is Harry's grandfather because Jo has told us that "James's parents were elderly, were getting on a little when he was born, which explains the only child, very pampered, had-him-late-in-life-so-he's-an-extra-treasure, as often happens, I think. They were old in wizarding terms, and they died." (TLC) Dorea was only 57 when she died.

-

-
Potter grandparents: Very little information is given about this side of the family. Harry saw a grandfather among the various relations in the Mirror of Erised, but we haven't been given any more than that. It would seem that all the Potter family were wizards, and that they're all dead (PS12). JKR has told us that there was nothing sinister about the deaths of Harry's Potter grandparents (TLC). Harry's grandfather was in Gryffindor, like his son and grandson (DH34).

-
Sirius Black ran away from home at the age of 16 and moved in with James' family. He said that James' parents took him in as "a second son" (OP6), which strongly suggests that James was their only son.

Lily Evans had a sister named Petunia Evans. Lily was a Muggle-born witch.  After Lily was invited to join the magical world at Hogwarts, Petunia corresponded with Albus Dumbledore about being admitted at Hogwarts.  After being politely denied Petunia resented her sister and the way their parents seemed to approve of Lily's magical ability calling her a freak (DH33). Petunia is married to Vernon Dursley and has one son named Dudley.

James Potter (b. 27March1960 d. 31October1981): (DH16) Died when he was only 21 years and 7 months old, approximately 4 years after leaving Hogwarts. Worked for the Order of the Phoenix.

Vernon Dursley is completely Muggle. He has no use for anything having to do with magic, thank you very much. As far as we're told, his family consists of himself, his wife Petunia, their spoiled son Dudley, and his sister, Marjorie (Aunt Marge).

-

-
The Dursleys' view of the Potters:

-
It isn't clear what their source is, but the Dursleys seem to be under the impression that James Potter did not work. Vernon calls him a "good-for-nothing" (PS1) and Marge viciously calls them drunks and layabouts and says that they got what they deserved. Rowling has told us that James Potter was so wealthy that he did not need a well-paying job (AOL) so Vernon's and Marge's assertions are at best misleading and at worst, fabrications.

The Weasleys are considered one of the prominent wizarding families, although their lack of money and their sympathy for non-pure-blood wizards and even Muggles makes people like the Malfoys look down on them. They live in The Burrow, a ramshackle house of four or five stories "a little way outside" the village of Ottery St. Catchpole (CS3).

-

-
For the last couple of generations, the Weasley children have all been male (Arthur, for example, is one of three brothers); Ginny Weasley, born in 1981, was the first girl to come along for quite some time (WEB LINKJKR). Both Molly and Arthur are related to the Black family.

-

-
Molly is fiercely protective of her children, but she has her hands full; the Weasleys are, almost without exception, risk-takers who courageously give their all for what they believe in (well, perhaps the twins do it from pure joy too). From the summer of 1996 on, the Weasley family clock has all hands pointing at "mortal peril." Molly took it around with her from room to room.

-

-
When the security of Grimmauld Place was compromised in the summer of 1997, the Weasley home became the new headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. After Scrimgeour was killed and Death Eaters took over the Ministry, most of the Weasley family members played a role in resisting the Death Eater pogroms. Ron's absence from Hogwarts was kept secret by using the family ghoul to fake a case of spattergroit, however, once Ron, Harry and Hermione were captured and the deception revealed, the family moved to Aunt Muriel's house nearby where it was safer (DH24).

-

-
The entire Weasley family fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, including Percy who had realized what a twit he had been. Molly's worst fears were made true when Fred was killed in an explosion and later, when Bellatrix attacked Ginny. Enough was enough. Molly fiercely counterattacked and killed her psychopathic cousin before she could threaten anyone else (DH36).

Molly and Arthur have at least twelve grandchildren (DH/e, YL).

Members of the Weasley family, in rough chronological order

-

-
Septimus Weasley (b. circa 1910s): The husband of Cedrella Black (born between 1912 and 1917). Cedrella's marriage to Septimus (was he a Muggle sympathizer too?) caused her to be "blasted" from the Black Family Tree. Although unconfirmed by Rowling, there is reasonable certainty that Septimus and Cedrella were Arthur Weasley's parents. If this is the case, Septimus could be the grandfather that gave Ron the Wizard Chess set (PS12). See my Notes, below.

-

-
Arthur Weasley (b. Feb. 6, circa 1950):  Husband of Molly Weasley and father of seven children. Order of the Phoenix Member (second war against Voldemort).  Almost died when attacked by Nagini in the ministry in Order of the Phoenix. (More...)

-

-
Molly Weasley (b. Oct. 30, circa 1950): Wife of Arthur Weasley and mother of seven children.  Order of the Phoenix Member (second war against Voldemort) Famous words she spoke in final battle against Bellatrix Lestrange "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH" and "You - will - never - touch - our - children - again!"  She is a very powerful witch and a very loving mother who would kill to protect her children. (DH36)

-

-
Bill Weasley (b. Nov. 29, 1970): Oldest son of Arthur and Molly, he works for Gringotts (previously as a curse breaker in Egypt and during the war at the bank in London); married to Fleur Delacour, and father of Victoire, Dominique and Louis Weasley. (More...)

-
* Fleur (Delacour) Weasley(b. circa 1977): One of the four Triwizard champions; Married to Bill Weasley and mother to Victoire, Dominque and Louis Weasley.

-
** Victoire Weasley (b. May 2, circa 1999 or 2000; Hogwarts c. 2011): Victoire is the daughter of Bill and Fleur Weasley. Harry’s son, James, caught Victoire snogging Teddy Lupin on Platform 9 ¾ as she was preparing to leave for what was most likely her seventh year at Hogwarts; at the time she would probably have been seventeen, and Teddy nineteen (DH/e). She was born on May 2nd, the anniversary of the victory over Voldemort (YL).

-
** Dominique Weasley (b. ?): Middle child of Bill & Fleur Weasley, this name could belong to either a boy or a girl (YL).

-
** Louis Weasley (b. ?): Youngest child of Bill & Fleur Weasley (YL).

-

-
Charlie Weasley (b. Dec. 12, 1972): Second son of Arthur and Molly, he works with dragons in Romania. (More...)

-

-
Percy Ignatius Weasley (b. Aug. 22, 1976): Third son of Molly and Arthur; employed by the Ministry of Magic. Husband of Audrey Weasley, and father to Molly and Lucy Weasley (YL). (More...)

-
* Audrey Weasley (b. ?) Wife of Percy Weasley and mother to Molly and Lucy Weasley.(YL)

-
** Molly Weasley (b. ?): Eldest daughter of Percy & Audrey Weasley (YL).

-
** Lucy Weasley (b. ?):Youngest daughter of Percy & Audrey Weasley (YL).

-

-
Fred Weasley (b. April 1, 1978 d. May 2, 1998): Twin with George and co-creator of Weasley Wizarding Whizzes.  Took Angelina Johnson to the Yule Ball in HPGF.  Died in the war against Voldemort after he heard Percy make a joke and the castle wall exploded (DH31)

-

-
George Weasley (b. Apr. 1, 1978): Twin with Fred, husband of Angelina (Johnson) Weasley (YL). (More...)

-
* Angelina (Johnson) Weasley (b. late October, 1977): Gryffindor (1989- 1996) Quidditch Chaser, captain (1995 - 1996). A tall black girl (GF16) and an excellent Quidditch player (PS11); born in October, the week before Hallowe'en (GF16). She put her name in for the Triwizard Tournament but wasn’t chosen (GF16), and went to the Yule Ball with Fred Weasley (GF22, GF23). Angelina became Quidditch captain in 1995 (OP12), which stressed her out and gave her something of a mean streak (OP13). Later in life, Angelina married George Weasley and had two children, Fred and Roxanne (YL). Angelina probably took the Weasley name when she married George, but this is not certain.

-
** Fred Weasley (b. ?): Eldest son of George & Angelina Weasley (YL).

-
** Roxanne Weasley (b. ?): Youngest daughter of George & Angelina Weasley (YL).

-

-
Ronald "Ron" Bilius Weasley (b. Mar. 1, 1980): Sixth son of Molly and Arthur, and the best friend of Harry Potter; husband of Hermione (Granger) Weasley (DH/e). Ron helped with WWW after Fred died before working for the ministry. (More...)

-
* Hermione Granger (b. Sept. 19, 1979): Best friend of Harry Potter and wife of Ron Weasley. (More...) Hermione probably took the Weasley name when she married Ron, but this is not certain.  Hermione is the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, she took this position after ....

-
** Rose Weasley (b. circa 2006): Rose is the older of Ron and Hermione’s two children, and their only daughter. On 1 September 2017, Rose was preparing to take the Hogwarts Express to her first year at school, and was rather nervous about whether she’d be sorted into Gryffindor (DH/e).

-
** Hugo Weasley (b. circa 2006-2009): The younger of Ron and Hermione’s two children, Hugo seems to be good friends with Lily Potter (DH/e).  In the epilogue to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows which takes place September of 2017, Hugo was not yet old enough to attend Hogwarts, but instead hangs out laughing with Lily on Platform 9 ¾ while his older sister, Rose, prepares to depart for her first year at Hogwarts. Though we don’t know his exact age, Lily Potter was nine at the time, and it’s likely the two of them were within a year or so of each other’s age. This would place Hugo’s birth roughly between 2006 and 2009, and his first year at Hogwarts at circa 2019 (DH/e).

-

-
Ginevra Weasley (b. Aug. 11, 1981): Seventh and youngest child of Molly and Arthur; She is the "first girl to be born into the Weasley clan for several generations." (JKR). Wife of Harry Potter (DH/e). (See Potter Family for more information on Ginny and her children)

-
* Harry Potter (b. July 31, 1980): See Potter Family for more information

* Arthur's two (unnamed) brothers (JKR). Is Bilius one of them?

-
* accountant cousin of Mrs. Weasley - a Muggle accountant who isn't spoken of by the Weasley family (PS6). He or she would actually be a Prewett relative.

-
* Bilius - uncle to Ron who supposedly saw a Grim and died, twenty-four hours later (PA6). Fred missed him at Bill and Fleur's wedding, saying he always good for a laugh (DH8).

-
* Lancelot - Great Auntie Muriel's cousin who was a Healer at St. Mungo's (DH8). He is not a Weasley (DH4), but he may not be a Prewett either.

-
* Mafalda (non-canon; see "Mafalda" below)

-
* Muriel - Molly's aunt (DH4) and Ron & Ginny's great aunt. She has a lovely "goblin-made" tiara and is apparently is a memorable kisser (HBP14, 29). Muriel is not a Weasley, but as the sister or the sister-in-law of one of Molly's parents, she may not be a Prewett either. Many thanks to Yvonne B. who pointed this out.

* Errol - aged and decrepit, Errol is a family owl. He barely survives some of his deliveries, but he's still hanging in there.

-
* Hermes - This owl belongs to Percy.

-
* Pigwidgeon - Known not-so-affectionately as "Pig," this tiny brown owl belongs to Ron (GF5).

-
Canon:

-
* Arthur was one of three brothers and had no sister. We don't know his brothers' names.

-
* Molly's maiden name was Prewett and she had at least 2 brothers, Gideon and Fabian. We don't know if Molly had sisters; none are ever mentioned.

-
* Ron (and by extension Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George and Ginny) had an uncle Bilius, a great-aunt Muriel and a grandfather who played Wizard Chess. In addition to uncles Gideon and Fabian, of course.

-
* Ginny is the only Weasley girl for generations.

-
* Molly refers to a relative as "Our Great Auntie Muriel," but because she says "our," this could mean Muriel was a great aunt of Molly and Arthur, or of Ron and his siblings.

-
* Molly and Sirius are "cousins by marriage."

-
o Therefore, Molly's parents are probably closely related to the 'Ignatius Prewett' listed on the Black Family tree. If the Black Family tree Jo auctioned is complete, Ignatius and Lucretia cannot be Molly's parents themselves because they are indicated as being childless.

-
* Arthur is "something like" Sirius's second cousin once removed. This describes a relationship where one person's great-great grandparent is the same person as the other person's great grand-parent.

-
o Therefore, Septimus Weasley is Arthur's father. Septimus's children would indeed Sirius's second cousins once removed. Assuming the Black family tree Jo auctioned is complete, this relationship fits the facts and can be explained no other way.

-

-
Guesswork (not canon):

-
* Bilius was one of Arthur's 2 brothers. Not canon: We don't know Bilius's surname and we don't know if Molly had more than 2 brothers. "Uncle" can also be an honorary name given to non-family members, though this doesn't seem likely.

-
* The grandfather who gave Ron the chess set is Septimus Weasley, Arthur's father. Not canon: We don't know his surname, so it could have been either Arthur's father Septimus, or Molly's father.

-

-
Mafalda, the "Weasley Cousin" (non-canon)

-
Rowling had created the character of a female cousin to the Weasleys for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; however, that character disappeared in rewrites.

-

-
On her website, Jo gives some more insight into the character: Her name is Mafalda, she is the daughter of the nameless accountant second cousin (a Prewett cousin through Molly - PS6), and she would have been a Slytherin (JKR). Here's what Rowling has to say in an interview about Mafalda:

-

-
Q: Last time we spoke you said there'd be a Weasley cousin. It didn't appear. You've deceived me!

-
A: It got pulled. Sorry about that. What happened on Book Four, and one of the reasons why it was easily the most difficult to write, which had absolutely nothing to do with Harry being famous or me being famous, was that for the first time my plan fell down. I got halfway through and realised there was a huge gaping plot hole. The two ends just didn't meet. It was entirely my own fault: I should have had the sense to go through it very carefully before I started writing. So I had to do an enormous amount of unpicking and in the process I'm afraid the Weasley cousin disappeared.

-
Q: Will we see her again?

-
A: Possibly. I really like her as a character but it's quite a complex plot I'm dealing with so I'm not sure that she'll fit anywhere else. She'll be the "character that might have been." (Nr)

Calculating the ages of the Weasley children

-
There has been much confusion about the relative ages of the Weasley children. Jo cleared this up on WEB LINKher website with the definitive answer that "Bill is two years older than Charlie, who is three years older than Percy, who is two years older than Fred and George, who are two years older than Ron, who is a year older than Ginny."

The real Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody did not serve on staff, although this was not discovered until June, 1995. The teacher everyone thought was Moody was actually Barty Crouch Jr. in disguise. Still, the real Mad-Eye is counted as a spectacular example of the jinx on the Defence Against the Dark Arts job.

Q: Have any of the Hogwarts professors had spouses?

JKR: Good question - yes, a few of them but that information is sort of restricted - you'll find out why. (CR)

Unfortunately, Rowling never got around to telling us why in the books.

Lestrange, Bellatrix

-
1951 - 2 May, 1998

-
Lestrange, formerly Black, was wife to Rudolphus Lestrange, sister to Narcissa Malfoy and Andromeda Tonks, and daughter to Cygnus Black III and Druella Rosier. Lestrange, the most fanatical and devoted Death Eater, was most well-known for the crime that earned her a life sentence in Azkaban: the use of the Cruciatus Curse on Frank and Alice Longobttom. Lestrange also performed countless murders, including those of her cousin Sirius Black and neice Nymphadora Lupin (formerly Nymphadora Tonks). Lestrange participated in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, the Battle over Little Whinging, and the Battle of Hogwarts. She was killed at the latter battle by Molly Weasley while fighting alongside her master. Lestrange was honored with the entrustment of Helga Hufflepuff's Cup shortly before Lord Voldemort's first downfall.

Malfoy, Lucius

-
born 1954

-
The wife of Narcissa Malfoy (formerly Black), father of Draco, grandfather to Scorpius Hyperion, and son of Abraxas. He was described as being very rich and snobby in the books, as well as being an expert in the Imperius Curse. Malfoy claimed to be under this very curse at the end of the First Wizarding War, and his story was believed by the Ministry. Malfoy was entrusted with Tom Riddle's Diary shortly before this point, and used it to reopen the Chamber of Secrets and attempt to discredit Ginny Weasley. This plan failed, however, and Malfoy was removed of the position of School Governer. Malfoy was present at the rebirth of Lord Voldemort and commanded the Death Eaters in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. He lost favor, however, in the aftermath of these events, and was pardoned for his crimes after his family's lack of participation in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Blood Status

Pure-Blood

Half-Blood

Half-blood is a term for a person who is born to one magical parent and one non-magical parent. Some examples of half-bloods are Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter. A half-blood may have a muggleborn parent and a pure-blood parent as well.

Muggle-born

Organization Memberships

Death Eaters

The Death Eaters are a group controlled by Lord Voldemort. Their enemies are the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore's Army, and at times the Ministry. The Death Eaters are anti-muggle and racist even though some of the members are half-blood.

Order of the Phoenix

The Order of the Phoenix is an organization fighting against Voldemort and his Death Eaters. It was founded by Albus Dumbledore during the First Wizarding War and was revived for the Second War. The Order was introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and has remained an integral part of the books ever since. The Order often comes to Harry's aid during battles and was present at the Battle of Hogwarts and the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. The Order communicates through the use of Patronuses which was taught to them by Dumbledore. Members are required to have left school before they can join.

Marauders

The Marauders were a group of friends at Hogwarts who developed The Marauder's Map. Remus Lupin was a werewolf, and when his friends learned this, they worked to become illegal Animagi so they could accompany Lupin when he transformed at the full moon without being in danger themselves. James Potter's Animagus was a stag (the same animal his son Harry's Patronus took the form of), Sirius Black's Animagus was a dog, and Peter Pettigrew's Animagus was a rat (which he later used to disguise himself as Ron Weasley's pet rat).

Dumbledore's Army
