(more to come)
The first description of Sirius Black appears at the beginning of Chapter 2 of Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry has come down for breakfast and the Dursleys are watching the news on the TV. There is a report about an escaped prisoner, only referred to as Black (PoA2). Sirius is seen looking gaunt, with elbow length, matted and tangled hair.
Harry Potter later describes Sirius as resembling a vampire with his sunken face, shadowed eyes and waxy white skin (PoA3). This description is further expanded on when Harry faces Black for the first time in the Shrieking Shack, when this combination of tightly stretched, waxy skin, and deep eye sockets makes Harry think of a corpse whose yellow teeth are bared. (PoA17) During this confrontation Sirius is described as being tall, but his features (in particular his wrist and arms) are described as wasted and shrunken.
When Sirius speaks it is with a hoarseness that may be due to its lack of use in the past 12 years. (PoA17) During a conversation on their way up to the castle, Sirius smiles in delight at the prospect of Harry coming to live with him. Harry is surprised at the change in his appearance caused by this smile, noticing that it makes him look as though a younger man was shining through the gaunt face. (PoA20)
We know that this degraded state of his appearance is due to his time in Azkaban because Harry finds a photograph of Sirius at Harry's parent's wedding. In this photograph, taken a couple of years before his arrest, Sirius is seen to be handsome. (PoA11)
Hermione: "You don’t think he has become…sort of…reckless…since he’s been cooped up in Grimmauld Place? You don’t think he’s…kind of…living through us?" Harry: "What d'you mean, 'living through us'?" Hermione: "I mean...well, I think he’d love to be forming secret Defence societies right under the nose of someone from the Ministry... I think he’s really frustrated at how little he can do where he is…so I think he’s keen to kind of…egg us on." — Hermione Granger on Sirius in 1996
True to a Gryffindor student's ideals, Black is very brave and loyal, as shown by his participation in both wars and willingness to die for those he loved. He is a talented and clever wizard, though he was also quite arrogant and mischievous as a teen, with a habit of bullying people with his best friend, James, namely Severus Snape. Sirius could be vicious towards those whom he disliked, sometimes unjustifiably; by sending Snape off to the Shrieking Shack as a teenager, he could have gotten Snape killed, he risked exposing his friend Remus' condition as a werewolf, and he risked getting himself and his friends expelled if his "prank" had worked.
He can also be cruel to his also-cruel house-elf, Kreacher, who praised his hated mother and made disparaging comments to members of the Order, but the true reason for his cruelty towards Kreacher was that the horrible house-elf was a living reminder of the home and family he despised. At times, he was irresponsible, risking getting caught by the Ministry because he felt stir-crazy in his house and advising Harry to take impulsive actions. Much of this can likely be attributed to the years Sirius spent in Azkaban, stunting his emotional development and making him especially eager to spend time with, and protect, his loved ones. However, his true heart never wavered, even during his stay in Azkaban.
Despite Sirius' good nature, he has, at times, shown to be capable of an explosive temper when angered. This trait is shared with both his mother, Walburga Black, and cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange. His years in Azkaban contributed greatly to his short-fuse, which was particularly evident during the events of 1993 and 1994 in which he tried persistently to capture Peter Pettigrew. It should be noted, however, that for all his anger towards Pettigrew, Sirius was capable of respecting Harry's request to not murder the man he escaped Azkaban to kill; opting instead to expose Pettigrew (a plan that unfortunately failed).
Though Sirius was a kind, loyal, courageous and selfless person, he has also displayed that he could be a hypocrite; though he claimed one's true character became apparent in the way they treated their inferiors rather than their equals, he was cruel to Kreacher, who admittedly was also quite cruel. He also claimed that no one was purely good or purely evil, and that everyone had both light and darkness inside him or her, but his behaviour towards Snape strongly suggested that he firmly believed him to have no good qualities at all. (However, this would be no different then how most people would consider Voldemort.) However, his flaws can be overlooked by his greatest redeeming quality: the intense level of affection he, like many others, is capable of feeling. He loved James and Lily dearly, and he went on to transfer that attachment to his godson, Harry.
Magical accomplishments and skills
Sirius was described as a powerful wizard by Minerva McGonagall, his former teacher. One of his dearest friends, Remus Lupin, also stated that he had been one of the cleverest Hogwarts students of his time.
* Animagus: Sirius was able to become an Animagus at the early age of fifteen, assuming the shape of a large black dog very much like the grim. As he was unregistered, he was able to take advantage of this ability to elude his Ministry captors. * Transfiguration Mastery: Sirius, along with Remus Lupin, could perform human transfiguration on Peter Pettigrew, forcing him out of his Animagus form. * Nonverbal Magic: Sirius was able to perform human transfiguration and defensive spells non-verbally. * Expert Duellist: In his fifth year, Sirius helped James Potter humiliate Severus Snape, who was an exceptionally talented wizard even in his youth. During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Sirius duelled with Lucius Malfoy and Antonin Dolohov and with the help of his godson, Harry, he defeated both of them. He was also able to hold his own against his cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange, who was Voldemort's most powerful Death Eater. However, he made the fatal mistake of underestimating Bellatrix, and even openly mocked her, before being hit by a spell that caused him to fall through the Veil, killing him. Sirius was also known to infuse physical contact into his duelling style, such as when he rammed Dolohov with his shoulder and punched Malfoy in the face. It should be noted that this would normally be considered illegal, but considering Sirius and his allies were fighting for their lives, it could be overlooked in that sort of situation. * Killing Curse (Possibly): Sirius was confident in his ability to slaughter Pettigrew. Though it is unknown how he intended to do it. * Healing spells: Sirius healed an injury from Wartcap Powder as soon as he received it.
Sirius owned a flying motorbike which he and James had used on at least one occasion to flee from two policemen, Sergeant Fisher and PC Anderson, and three unknown people on brooms. (Harry Potter Prequel) On the night of the Potter's deaths, Sirius leant this motorbike to Hagrid in order for Hagrid to take Harry from his parent's destroyed house to Dumbledore. Very shortly after this night, Sirius was arrested and the motorbike ended up in hands of Arthur Weasley (HBP).
In The Order of the Phoenix we learn that after Sirius left his parent's house he was able to get a house due to his Uncle Alphard leaving him some money. The whereabouts of this house are unknown.
Sirius owned a magical mirror that, when used with its pair, can act as a communication device and he also owned a magical knife that could open any lock. Both of these objects were given to Harry as gifts by Sirius. (OotP)
Sirius is able to escape from Hogwarts at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban by the use of the Hippogriff, Buckbeak. We later see Buckbeak at 12 Grimmauld Place who is also in hiding with Sirius. After Sirius' death, at the beginning of Half-Blood Prince Dumbledore comes to collect Harry and also to inform him of the possessions he has been given. One item on this list is Buckbeak who Harry says can stay with Hagrid. This implies that although Buckbeak was the property of Hogwart's and was in the care of Hagrid, once Sirius in effect stole him in order to escape, Buckbeak became his possession.
On the death of his mother, Sirius inherited Number 12 Grimmauld Place which included the possession of his family's house elf, Kreacher. On Sirius' death, this house and house-elf were bequethed to Harry Potter.
The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black was one of the largest and oldest pure-blood wizarding families in Britain. Many wizarding families in Britain are distantly related to the House of Black. The Black family tree is displayed in the drawing room of the family home at 12 Grimmauld Place in London, England on an intricate tapestry, as an ornate mural. It starts in the Middle Ages and shows the dominant line of the family up to the present day.
By the late twentieth century, the House of Black had become extinct in the male line with the deaths of Sirius and Regulus Black, neither of whom had children. The female line remained extant through the Malfoy family and Teddy Lupin, though the latter descends from a Black who was disowned.
"...my parents, with their pure-blood mania, convinced that to be a Black made you practically royal..." —Sirius Black to Harry Potter on his family's values
The Black family traces its origin back to the Middle Ages. They claim to have entirely magical ancestry, but as Sirius Black informed his godson Harry Potter, no true pure-blood families existed by the twentieth century. The pure-blood families like the Blacks simply removed Muggles and Squibs from their family trees. The Blacks place a great importance on blood purity, considering themselves akin to royalty in the wizarding world and disdaining Muggles, Squibs, Blood traitors and Muggle-borns. The family motto, which can be found on the family crest, is Toujours Pur, which means "Always Pure" in French. Many members took this phrase very seriously.

Because of their views, a large number of the Black family members practise the Dark Arts and supported Lord Voldemort during the First and Second Wizarding Wars. A few Blacks even became Death Eaters, while many others never took the Dark Mark but believed in the "purification" of the wizarding world nevertheless. A few members of the family, however, disagreed with the traditional views of their family; Sirius Black, for example, joined the Order of the Phoenix, as did Nymphadora Tonks, a distaff member of the Black family. Both were murdered by Bellatrix Lestrange née Black, Sirius's cousin and Tonks's aunt, in battle.
With Sirius's death, the male line of the Black family ended; the female line continues through the descendants of his cousins Andromeda Tonks and Narcissa Malfoy, his second cousin, once removed, Arthur Weasley, the Burke family, the Crouches, the Longbottoms and possibly the Potter family.
