The Second Wizarding War were the events that unfolded after Lord Voldemort's second return to power and The First Wizarding War. The two conflicting sides consisted of the majority of The Wizarding World along with The Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore's Army and Hogwarts which were led by Albus Dumbledore, and later, Harry Potter; and Lord Voldemort and his followers, The Death Eaters. The Death Eaters were interested in blood purity in The Wizarding World and forged a violent campagin against muggles and muggle borns and the capture of both the Muggle and Wizarding worlds. The Second Wizarding War began on 24th June, 1995 and led to several deaths from both sides. After years of confrontation, the final battle, known as The Battle of Hogwarts began and led to the confrontation between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort was subsequently defeated and killed and the war ended on 2nd May 1998.

[edit] Background Information

Before the Second Wizarding War, the First Wizarding War began after the rise of Lord Voldemort and lasted for eleven years from 1970 to 1981. This was when Lord Voldemort started an army of Death Eaters, who were a group of dark witches and wizards, to achieve his goal of blood purity in the world. He also wanted to eventually dominate both the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. During this time he also managed to create six horcruxes to preserve his soul and making him immortal without the destruction of his horcruxes. This first war ended the lives of several powerful witches and wizards as well as several members from The Order of the Phoenix.

[edit] Fall of Voldemort

In the Halloween of 1981 on the 31st December, Lord Voldemort came to the home of the Potters to attempt to kill them. This was in response to the Prophecy, which said the child of an Order Member would eventually be his downfall. One of his possible choices was the young [[Harry Potter, son of Lily Potter and James Potter who lived in Godric's Hollow. Voldemort managed to kill Lily and James but once he tried to kill Harry, the spell backfired back at him and Harry survived, living only a scar. The reason for this was the love Harry's mother gave to him before being killed. He also, without knowing it, created his seventh horcrux in Harry, something he would never properly realise. Because of his previous six horcruxes, he didn't die but was left weak and without magic. Harry was later left to his relatives the Dursleys who would look after him until the age of seventeen.

[edit] Battle for the Philosopher's Stone

To regain his power, Voldemort travelled to Albania to study dark magic and regain his power and strength. To keep himself moving he managed to possess the bodies of snakes and other similar animals to keep alive, waiting for one of his death eaters to come to his aid. Instead, he found Quirinus Quirrell, who was the Muggle Studies of Hogwarts at the time. Lord Voldemort convinced him of his power and he eventually possessed Quirrell who would then go back to Hogwarts to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts the next year. Because Voldemort was still weak and parasitic, Quirrell had to feed on the blood of Unicorns to keep his strength up. At that time, Voldemort was interested in finding the Philosopher's Stone, which kept the user immortal. After failing to steal the stone from Gringotts Wizarding Bank (which had already been collected by Rubeus Hagrid under the orders of Albus Dumbledore), Voldemort learned that the stone lay in chambers in Hogwarts protected by an assortment of charms and spells. After making it through the chambers, he found the Mirror of Erised but could not figure out how to get the stone. Eventually Harry Potter soon came, found the stone and defeated Quirrell, but not Voldemort. [1]

[edit] Confrontation in the Chamber of Secrets

In 1943, Tom Marvolo Riddle preserved part of his soul in his diary, after he learned about horcruxes from Professor Horace Slughorn. He used the death of a student named Myrtle and then kept the diary safe with him. Later, in The First Wizarding War, he gave the diary to Lucius Malfoy, who was unaware that it was a horcrux, for safe keeping. Then, in 1992, [[Lucius Malfoy] slipped the diary into the cauldron of Ginny Weasley while in Diagon Alley. Ginny let all her true feelings out to the diary and she began to trust it entirely. With Tom's soul in the diary, he managed to make Ginny write on the walls of Hogwarts as well as releasing the Basilisk into the school, petrifying several students other members of the Hogwarts Community. Harry later found the diary which began to 'talk' to him as well. He then learned about the death of Moaning Myrtle and the framing of his friend Rubeus Hagrid. [2] Eventually Ginny was taken to the Chamber of Secrets which Harry Potter soon learned about. Using Parselmouth to access the chamber, Harry Potter along with Ron Weasley and Professor Gilderoy Lockhart entered the chamber to save Ginny. After being separated from the other two, Harry Potter defeated the Basilisk and confronted the teenage Tom Riddle. Then, using the fang of the Basilisk, Harry stabbed the diary which destroyed it and Voldemort's soul. [3]

[edit] Return of Peter Pettigrew

In the year of 1994, Ron Weasley's pet rat Scabbers was actually revealed to be Peter Pettigrew in animagus form. [4] It is revealed that Peter Pettigrew was the one who betrayed Harry's parents and killed thirteen muggles and the fact that he framed Sirius Black for it, who had recently escaped from Azkaban. Unfortunately, he later escaped and went on a search for Lord Voldemort.

[edit] Start of the Second Wizarding War

[edit] Lord Voldemort's Rebirth

In 1994, Lord Voldemort thought of another plan to kill Harry Potter, with the help of Death Eater, Barty Crouch Jr. Barty was to go undercover as Alastor Moody, Hogwarts' new Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor to infiltrate Hogwarts. Barty was originally rescued from Azkaban by his father, Barty Crouch Sr. and was put under the imperius curse, though he later escaped and came to Lord Voldemort. Barty Crouch Jr then put his father under the imperius curse though after he escaped, he killed him. With information on the Triwizard Tournament to be held at Hogwarts that year, Barty Crouch Jr (Disguised as Alastor Moody) turned the Triwizard Cup, found at the end of the third task maze, into a portkey which led to a graveyard in which Lord Voldemort was stationed. Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory both reached the cup and touched it at the same time, transporting them both to the graveyard. Cedric was soon killed by Peter Pettigrew and Harry was captured while he watched the rebirth of Lord Voldemort. With the help of a spell and potion, Voldemort returned to his physical form and attempted to kill Harry Potter. Though with the help of his deceased loved ones, Harry overcame Voldemort and took the portkey back to Hogwarts with Voldemort failing his mission, Barty Crouch Jr was soon discovered as an imposter and was sent to a Dementor's kiss. [5] This is when the Second Wizarding War first began, although this was not officiated by the Ministry.

[edit] Battle of the Department of Mysteries

In 1996, Voldemort wanted to steal a prophecy from The Department of Mysteries in The Ministry of Magic but realised that the only ones who could hold the prophecy are the ones in which the prophecy actually refers to. Knowing this, and learning from Kreacher Harry's affection for his godfather, Voldemort send a fake vision of Sirius Black being tortured to Harry Potter using the special connection they shared. Seeing this, Harry Potter collected several of the Dumbledore's Army members and flew via thestral to The Ministry of Magic hoping to rescue Sirius. Realising that it was a fake vision, Harry collected the prophecy and tried to leave though was stopped by Lucius Malfoy and his group of Death Eaters, including Bellatrix Lestrange. The groups scattered throughout the department and a battle began between the two sides before the members of Dumbledore's Army escaped somewhere else. Five members from the Order of the Phoenix (tipped off by Severus Snape) soon arrived and the battle continued. Soon after, Bellatrix Lestrange cast a spell at Sirius Black, knocking him into the veil and killing him. [6] Albus Dumbledore soon came and captured all Death Eaters except Bellatrix Lestrange who escaped along with a chasing Harry Potter in tow. Lord Voldemort soon appeared in where Albus Dumbledore engaged in a fierce battle with him. Lord Voldemort soon possessed Harry though many Aurors arrive, Voldemort flees elsewhere.

[edit] Battle of the Astronomy Tower

On a night on June in 1997, Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter returned from a mission to retrieve a horcrux. Upon return on the Astronomy Tower, Dumbledore was weak from the Drink of Despair recently drank. As Harry left on Dumbledore's orders, Dumbledore was confronted by Draco Malfoy, who had the task to kill Dumbledore, as well a small group of death eaters for backup. Draco, unable to kill Dumbledore was soon joined by Severus Snape who was the one to kill Dumbledore, something they had arranged earlier. [7] As the death of the headmaster came apparent, a battle soon ensued between The Death Eaters and members of Dumbledore's Army and The Order of the Phoenix, the latter using Felix Felicis, for luck. During the battle, the only fatality was of Death Eater, Gibbon, after he was hit by a stray curse from the wand Thorfinn Rowle. Bill Weasley was also attacked by the werewolf, Fenrir Greyback, but due to the fact that Greyback wasn't fully transformed at the time, it had minimal effects on Bill. The Death Eaters ran once they completed their mission in which they were chased by Harry Potter. After a brief confrontation with Snape, Harry couldn't stop the Death Eaters from escaping.

[edit] Battle Over Little Whinging

On the 27 July 1997 several members of The Order of the Phoenix attempted to move Harry Potter from 12 Privet Drive as the protection on the house would break on his birthday. Because of the Ministry being able to trace the use of port-keys, the floo network and apparition, the group had to use other means of transport to reach the safe house, such as brooms and thestrals. The plan was to use polyjuice potion to morph six of the order members into Harry lookalikes, so that Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters can't tell which Harry is which. Reluctantly, Harry accepts and each of the seven Harry's are paired up with another order member. The real Harry is paired up with Rubeus Hagrid on his motorbike and the group soon takes off. They are ambushed by death eaters and a battle and chase ensues. At first the real Harry isn't detected but soon is found after Harry uses an obvious disarming charm on a death eater. Hedwig was killed after she was hit by a killing curse which devastated Harry. Meanwhile, Alastor Moody was teamed up with Mundungus Fletcher, who they thought was the real Harry. Afraid, Mundungus apparated elsewhere and Moody was hit with a killing curse. George Weasley also suffered the loss of an ear, but was properly looked after. Eventually all remaining Order members returned safely to the Burrow and the real Harry was saved. [8]

[edit] Fall of the Ministry of Magic

In July of 1997, death eater, Yaxley, managed to put the Head of the Magical Law Enforcement, Pius Thicknesse, under the imperius curse. From there, Lord Voldemort and his death eaters had an insider in the Ministry of Magic who was high up in the system. Apart from Pius, there was also other members of the Ministry who were under the curse. As the death eaters had so much control over The Ministry, they could monitor if Harry Potter used the floo network or tried to apparate outside from Privet Drive. [9] On the 1 August, Rufus Scrimgeour, Minister of Magic, was killed in an attempt to take over the Ministry. Rufus was previously tortured for information on the whereabouts of Harry Potter but refused to give up any information. Thicknesse, still under the imperius curse, was made Lord Voldemort's 'puppet Minister of Magic'. They also put a Taboo Curse on Voldemort's name so if anyone says his name, the Ministry can track them down and took over the Daily Prophet to sway news towards their favor.

[edit] Attack at Bill and Fleur's Wedding

As the Ministry had fallen, Kingsley Shacklebolt sent a patronus to Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour's wedding to warn the guests that the Ministry had fallen, the Minister of Magic was dead and the death eaters were coming. "The Ministry has fallen. Scrimgeour is dead. They are coming." [10] Deaths Eaters soon quickly appeared and attacked the guests although Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger managed to escape. Meanwhile, the home of Dedalus Diggle was burned down and Ted and Andromena Tonks were both tortured for information, though all survived.

[edit] Infiltration of the Ministry of Magic

While on the run from Death Eaters, and searching for Lord Voldemort's horcruxes, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley suspected that Salazar Slytherin's locket was in the possesion of Dolores Umbridge, who worked at the Ministry of Magic. To avoid detection, the trio used polyjuice potion to disguise themselves as members of the Ministry; Harry was disguised as Albert Runcorn, Hermione as Mafalda Hopkirk and Ron as Reginald Cattermole. They managed to make it into the Ministry safely, but the trio soon had to split up, leaving Harry to go find the locket in Dolores Umbridge's office. Although he didn't find the locket, he managed to find the magical eye of his late friend, Alastor Moody. Making his way down to the courtrooms, Harry met up with Ron, and Hermione, who was helping Umbridge with her trials (still disguised as Mafalda Hopkirk). Harry manages to stun Umbridge, takes the locket and escapes along with Ron, Hermione and Mary Cattermole, who was under trial at the time. As they trio are detected, the exits began to be sealed and exits were limited. Hermione manages to disapparate with Ron and Harry but Yaxley grabs on too, forcing them to abandon their safe house at 12 Grimmauld Place. [11]

[edit] Attack at Godric's Hollow

After Ron Weasley abandoned Harry Potter and Hermione Granger while they were on the run from the death eaters and searching for horcruxes, Hermione and Harry decided to visit Godric's Hollow. Harry wanted to visit because that was were his parents lived and where they were killed while Hermione believed that Godric Gryffindor's Sword may be in the possesion of Bathilda Bagshot, who lived there. Using polyjuice potion and the hairs of two muggles, the pair successfully entered Godric's Hollow and found the town's graveyard. In the graveyard they found the graves of Ignotus Peverell and Harry's parents, Lily and James Potter. They soon caught the attention of who they thought was Bathilda Bagshot, who lured them back to her home. As the pair asked her questions, she did not answer and they continued into her house. As Harry, who didn't realise, spoke parseltongue to Bathilda, he turned away and immediately her body fell away and Voldemort's snake Nagini appeared and attacked Harry. As Nagini began to coil herself around Harry, Hermione heard noise from upstairs an came to Harry's aid. They managed to disaparte away before Lord Voldemort arrived though Harry was bitten by the snake. [11]

[edit] Ambush at the Lovegoods

Soon after Ron Weasley destroyed Salazar Slytherin's locket and returned to Harry Potter and Hermione Granger, the trio decided to visit the home of Xenophilius Lovegood and his daughter Luna Lovegood. The reason behind the visit was that the mysterious symbol seen on Xenophilius Lovegood's necklace, noticed by Hermione, had connections to Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald and The Tales of Beedle the Bard among others. Wanting to know more they approaced Xenophilius but noticed that there was no sign of Luna. He told the trio about the tale of The Deathly Hallows and they learned more information about The Resurrection Stone, The Elder Wand and The Cloak of Invisibility. The trio soon grew suspicious of their surroundings as they noticed that The Quibbler was no longer supportive of Harry as well as the fact that Luna probably hadn't been in the house for several days. They soon discovered that Luna had been kidnapped by Death Eaters on her way to Hogwarts on the Hogwarts Express, due to their positive outlook towards Harry. Xenophilius soon alerted the death eaters of the trio's presence and they ambushed the house. After trying to hold the trio there, they managed to escape and hide in the house. The death eaters began to torture Xenophilius thinking that he had lied to them, but Hermione managed to escape with Ron and Harry so that they would see Harry and herself, but not Ron, who was meant to be home sick. The Death Eaters, seeing the pair, then left Xenophilius alone. [12]

[edit] Skirmish at Malfoy Manor

After Fenir Greyback captured Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger along with Dean Thomas and Griphook the goblin, they were brought to Malfoy Manor. Although Lord Voldemort was not around; Bellatrix Lestrange, The Malfoy Family and Peter Pettigrew were all present. Bellatrix ordered the captured group, all except Hermione, to be taken down to the basement to be held hostage where they also found Ollivander and Luna Lovegood, who were both also captured. Bellatrix then tortured Hermione as they wanted information on how they obtained Godric Gryffindor's sword, which was in their possesion at the time, though Hermione thought of a story claiming the sword was a fake. Soon after, the house elf Dobby was sent by Aberforth Dumbledore to apparate them out of there, first with Luna, Ollivander and Dean. Hearing this, Peter Pettigrew came downstairs to see what was going on and was soon ambushed by Ron and Harry, who took his wand. Peter hesitated killing Harry and subsequently, his silver hand, given to him by Voldemort, strangled him to death. Rushing upstairs, they tried to get Hermione from Bellatrix and tried to escape with Dobby. As Dobby appeared, Harry, Hermione, Ron, Griphook and Dobby all attempted to apparate out of the manor and to Shell Cottage, the home of newly married couple, Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley. As they were escaping, Bellatrix threw a blade at the group which ended up stabbing Dobby. Dobby died shortly after from the injuries he sustained and the group buried him near Shell Cottage. [13]

[edit] Break-in of Gringotts

After escaping from Malfoy Manor along with Griphook the Goblin; Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley make a plan to break in to Bellatrix Lestrange's vault at Gringotts as they found out that something very valuable was hidden there. They deduced that another one of the horcruxes would be in the vault so they asked Griphook to help them in, he agreed, in return for The Sword of Gryffindor. To get in, Hermione used one of Bellatrix's hairs left on her after their confrontation in Malfoy Manor, and made a polyjuice potion to transform into Bellatrix. She then changed some of Ron's features so he looked like a whole different person and gave him the alias 'Dragomir Despard'. With Harry and Griphook under the cloak of Invisibility, the group headed to Gringotts. Originally having trouble with being 'too nice' as Bellatrix, Hermione eventually was able to convince death eater, Travers that she was Bellatrix. Travers then accompanied them into the bank. Using various spells and charms such as the Imperius Curse, they managed to make it to the vault. Using the help of goblin, Bogrod, they made it past the dragon guarding the vault and got rid of Travers. They first had trouble finding something but eventually they saw Helga Hufflepuff's Cup and tried to reach it. Unfortunatly, due to various charms, all the gold they touched multiplied and the treasures grew hotter and hotter. They eventually managed to retrieve the cup but Griphook betrayed them and ran off with the sword, calling the guards onto the group. The group fired spells to the goblins and managed to escape on the dragon with the cup. [14]

[edit] Battle of Hogwarts

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger first disapparated into Hogsmeade Village but were detected by some death eaters who were to send Dementors onto the trio. They were soon saved by Aberforth Dumbledore and taken into his pub in which is led the trio to a secret passage which led to Hogwarts. [15] They were soon met by Neville Longbottom who took them to the Room of Requirement where many students were hiding out. The trio were then helped by Cho Chang and Luna Lovegood to figure out another one of Voldemort's horcruxes, Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem. Meanwhile, Ron and Hermione visited the Chamber of Secrets to retrieve more basilisk venom to destroy the cup. Students too young to fight were evacuated and the heads of houses led older students to the tallest towers. Slytherin students were also evacuated as they did not want to fight in the battle. The death eaters soon attacked Hogwarts which led to various duels and defences from the Hogwarts side. The trio soon found the diadem in the Room of Requirement which was destroyed by Vincent Crabbe after using fiendfyre, also killing himself. [16] After learning memories from a dying Severus Snape, Lord Voldemort announced an hour break for Harry to give himself up. Harry soon realized that he himself was a horcrux and needed to give himself up. Harry sacrificed himself to Voldemort but was only knocked unconscious by the killing curse. Rubeus Hagrid carried Harry back to Hogwarts and Neville soon acquired the Sword of Godric Gryffindor in which he beheaded Nagini with, leaving Voldemort with no horcruxes. Various creatures such as house elves, thestrals, Buckbeak, centaurs continued to fight back with the students and Professors as well as the residents of Hogsmeade Village. In the chaos, Harry managed to hide under the Invisibility Cloak as death eaters, Fenir Greyback, Walden Macnair, Antonin Dolohov, Yaxley, Augustus Rookwood and Pius Thicknesse were defeated by, Neville and Ron, Hagrid, Filius Flitwick, George Weasley and Lee Jordan, and Arthur and Percy Weasley respectively. Soon only Bellatrix Lestrange and Voldemort were left as each one of them battled students and Professors. After Bellatrix almost killed Ginny Weasley, Molly Weasley killed Bellatrix, angering Voldemort. [17]

[edit] Duel of the Great Hall

Before the killing curse he sent could hit her, Harry cast a shield charm and revealing himself. He also told Voldemort about the Elder Wand.

"...Didn't you listen to Ollivander? The wand chooses the wizard...The Elder Wand recognised a new master before Dumbledore died, someone who never laid a hand on it. The new master removed the wand from Dumbledore against his will, never realising exactly what he had done, or that the world's most dangerous wand had given him its allegiance...The true master of the Elder Wand was Draco Malfoy." Harry Potter

Harry tried to tell Voldemort he should show remorse but instead cast a killing curse at Harry, which rebounded from Harry's disarming charm. This was because The Elder Wand which Voldemort used was rightfully Harry's. At this point, Lord Voldemort was dead, and The Second Wizarding War was no more. [18]

There were several other deaths in the battle including; Vincent Crabbe, who was killed by his own fiendfyre, Fred Weasley, who was killed in an explosion, Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks, who were both killed in duels, Severus Snape, who was killed by Nagini and Colin Creevey, who came back to participate in the Battle.
