Harry first met Ron while on the train from King's Cross to Hogwarts. Harry was fascinated to meet someone from a wizarding family and Ron was equally fascinated to meet the famous Harry Potter. They become firm friends and both are sorted into Gryffindor House. The boys make friends with Hermione Granger and the three of them go to the third floor corridor intending to stop Severus Snape from giving the Philosopher's Stone to Voldemort. Ron's knowledge of chess is crucial to them completing one stage of the obstacles placed to protect the Stone and he bravely sacrifices himself in order to let Harry and Hermione go on to the further stages.
Ron Weasley and Harry Potter are prevented by Dobby from boarding the Hogwarts Express and use Arthur Weasley's flying car to get there. On arrival they crash into the Whomping Willow, breaking Ron's wand. Something is attacking Muggleborns and leaving messages written in blood on the castle walls that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Following a suggestion from Rubeus Hagrid to "follow the spiders", Ron and Harry (despite Ron's deep fear of spiders) follow them into the Forbidden Forest to speak to Aragog and are then attacked by Aragog's family. When Ron's sister, Ginny Weasley, is taken into the Chamber, Ron and Harry force their Dark Arts professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, to accompany them to the Chamber to get her back. Lockhart steals Ron's wand and tries to use it against him but in its damaged state it backfires on him.

Crookshanks makes many attempts to attack Scabbers, leading to Ron and Hermione arguing and falling out and Scabbers disappearing before being discovered in Rubeus Hagrid's hut when they go to console Hagrid before Buckbeak's execution. On the way back to the castle, Scabbers runs away and the Grim, a large black dog, appears. Ron steps in front of Harry to protect him from the Grim and is dragged by the dog into the roots of the Whomping Willow and on to the Shrieking Shack where the dog transforms into Sirius Black, a convicted murderer who is believed to want Harry dead. They are then joined by Remus Lupin and Severus Snape who is hexed by Ron, Hermione and Harry and Ron's rat, Scabbers is revealed to be Peter Pettigrew and Black's real target.

Portrayals within films
Ron is portrayed in all eight films by Rupert Grint (more to come)
Ron, like everyone in the Weasley family, has vivid red hair and freckles on his face. He is tall and thin, with big hands and feet, a long nose, and blue eyes.
Ron is loyal and very funny, but he can also be immature and insensitive, to a point where he can be a bit unkind, such as the numerous times he hurt Hermione's feelings throughout the series, or when he accused Cho Chang of being a fan of the Tornados Quidditch team only because of their recent popularity.
Ron is often outshone and overshadowed by his five older brothers, all of whom had accomplished much more than Ron by the time he entered Hogwarts. He believed he had a lot to live up to, because everyone expected him to do as well as his brothers, but it wouldn't be a big deal if he did because they'd done it first. When he looks into the Mirror of Erised, he sees himself in the future, outshining his older brothers, namely becoming Head Boy, Quidditch Captain, and winner of the Quidditch Cup. Ron is also shunted aside because his best friend, Harry Potter, is famous. This seems to affect him most in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, when it leads to him and Harry having a row.
JK Rowling stated in an interview about Ron in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: "Ron is the most immature of the three main characters, but in part seven he grows up. He was never strong footed, people see him mostly as Harry's friend; his mother had actually wanted a girl and in the last book he finally has to acknowledge his weaknesses. But it's exactly that which makes Ron a man."
Magical accomplishments and skills
Ron is known for being an excellent chess player throughout the series, and though usually temperamental, is a good Keeper when he is confident and focused. Though his schoolwork is rather average, he has shown exceptional skill in defensive magic, probably a result of his involvement in Dumbledore's Army.
Being the second-youngest of seven children, most of Ron's possessions, especially during his first and second year at Hogwarts, are hand-me-downs, including Bill's old robes, Charlie's old wand, and Percy's old rat, Scabbers. In the summer of 1993, the Weasley family won seven hundred galleons in the Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw, which allowed Ron to buy new items including a new fourteen-inch willow wand with a unicorn tail-hair core. The following summer, he received a small and energetic owl, which Ginny called Pigwidgeon and which Ron usually refers to as Pig, from Sirius Black. After he became a prefect, his mother rewarded him by buying him a brand new broomstick, a Cleansweep Eleven. On his seventeenth birthday, he received a watch with stars on its face instead of numbers, a traditional coming-of-age present, from his parents. He also received Albus Dumbledore's Deluminator on July 31, 1997, which Dumbledore bequeathed him in his will.
