Rita Skeeter is a popular and often wildly innacurate journalist for publications such as The Daily Prophet, as well as the author of The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore. Her methods of finding a juicy story were sometimes illegal, including her ability as an unregistered Animagus and use of Veritaserum.

[edit] Fourth book

In the aftermath of the 422nd Quidditch World Cup some Death Eaters caused a riot and tormented a family of Muggles in the area. Finally the Dark Mark was set off in the sky over the woods there, scattering the Death Eaters and scaring the crowd further. Rita Skeeter was in the wood when Ministry of Magic worker Arthur Weasley left the scene along with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and his son Ron.[1] Unfortunately he didn't recognise her in the dark and she later quoted his hurried assurance to the people there that no-one had been hurt in the Daily Prophet, critical of the brevity of the statement. She claimed that there were rumours that several bodies had been removed from the scene, causing panic for those like Molly Weasley waiting for her family to come home from the World Cup.[2]

When the Weasley family look at the article Arthur is not surprised to see who was the author. Percy was inclined to pompously side with the view that releasing any statement without higher authorisation had been a bad move, but Bill comments that Rita never makes anyone look good. She had once called him a 'long-haired pillock'.[2]
