[edit] Background

At a young age, Poppy took up a job at Hogwarts as the school nurse and matron. In 1971 when Remus Lupin came to study at the school whilst he was infected with lycanthropy, Albus Dumbledore put Poppy in charge of looking after Remus every month during his transformation. Her job would entail helping Remus to the shrieking shack through the passage near the Whomping Willow and making sure he was okay before he stayed overnight.

[edit] Appearances

[edit] Philosopher's Stone

In 1991, Ron Weasley was bitten by Rubeus Hagrid's dragon, Norbert and sent to the hospital wing under the care of Madam Pomfrey. She did have her doubts when Ron told her it was a dog bite but eventually she dismissed her suspicions and put her focus in healing him. Later that year, after Harry Potter's fight with Quirinus Quirrell and Lord Voldemort, Harry was sent to the hospital wing for Madam Pomfrey to heal him. Harry spent three days unconscious before he woke up, although Madam Pomfrey did not allow any of Harry's friends to visit. [1]

[edit] Chamber of Secrets

In 1992, Harry Potter fell from his broom during a Quidditch match and severely hurt some of his bones. After Gilderoy Lockhart failed to fix his arm and left it with no bones, Madam Pomfrey used skele-gro to help grow back the bones. She was annoyed that Harry didn't come to her first as she can heal bones 'in a heartbeat'. [2] Later on in year, Hermione Granger had ingested a vial of Polyjuice Potion which was accidently made with a cat hair. This left Hermione hairy and with a tail so she was sent to Madam Pomfrey, who was rather suspicious. Madam Pomfrey managed to heal Hermione but was rather annoyed with the constant amount of visitors. [3] The year got worse when a mysterious creature petrified many of the students and castle residents leaving Madam Pomfrey to heal the students. She worked alongside Pomona Sprout to develop a mandrake made potions to heal those effected. At the end of the year, Albus Dumbledore publicly congratulated the pair on their efforts. [4]

[edit] Prisoner of Azkaban

Madam Pomfrey looked after Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in 1994 after the events of their finding of Sirius Black and the discovery of Peter Pettigrew. With the help of Hermione's Time-Turner, they managed to go back in time and save Buckbeak from death and Sirius Black from the Dementor's kiss, without Madam Pomfrey knowing it. As Hermione and Harry recovered from passing out from the dementors, Poppy approved of Remus Lupin's remedy of chocolate. [5]

"Finally got a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher who knows his remedies."

[edit] Goblet of Fire

Near the start of the year, Madam Pomfrey removed the beards of several students who had tried to get over Albus Dumbledore's age line, including Fred Weasley and George Weasley. She didn't approve of The Triwizard Tournament as it would bring nothing but grief and suffering. She was also put in charge of the four competitors (Harry Potter, Cedric Diggory, Viktor Krum and Fleur Delacour) with any injuries they recieve during the tournament. She later took the body of Cedric Diggory up to the hospital wing after he was killed by Peter Pettigrew. She prescribed Dreamless Sleep Potion to Harry so he could get a good night sleep. [6]

[edit] Order of the Phoenix

In 1996, Hogwarts was taken over by the Ministry under the reign of Dolores Umbridge. While Umbridge tried to sack Rubeus Hagrid with the help of aurors from the Ministry, Minerva McGonagall was hit by four stunning spells to the chest and was transferred to St Mungo's. [7] Poppy was rather close with Minerva and was shocked on the attack, saying she'd resign if it wasn't for the welfare of the students she looked after. She later unsuccessfully tried to heal Marietta Edgecombe after she received a jinx after Umbrdge made her tell her about Dumbledore's Army.

  • Ron: "Someone must have blabbed to her!"
  • Hermione: "They can't have done...because I put a jinx on that piece of parchment we all signed. Believe me, if anybody’s run off and told -Umbridge, we’ll know who they are and they will really regret it."
  • Ron: "What’ll happen to them?"
  • Hermione: "Well, put it this way...it’ll make Eloise Midgen’s acne look like a couple of cute freckles."

At the end of the year, Madam Pomfrey treated injuries from The Battle of the Department of Mysteries.

[edit] Half Blood Prince

During the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, Madam Pomfrey tended to the injuries of those hurt in the battle. Bill Weasley was the worst affected after he was attacked by Fenrir Greyback. Luckily, Bill did not inherit lycanthropy as Fenrir was not fully transformed at the time. Poppy later gave her respect to Albus Dumbledore who was killed in the battle. [8]

[edit] Deathly Hallows

During the death eaters reign of Hogwarts, Madam Pomfrey stayed to look after students who had been tortured by Lord Voldemort's followers. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Poppy tended to the injured and dead in the Great Hall.

[edit] Portrayals within films
