The Phoenix is a scarlet bird with a golden tail. It is about the size of a swan. The Phoenix regenerates itself by bursting into flames and rising from the ashes as a chick. Its song is magical and its tears have healing properties. (Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them)

Albus Dumbledore has a phoenix named Fawkes (CS 12) who helps Harry out in the Chamber of Secrets. (CS 17) Dumbledore says, "Fascinating creatures, phoenixes. They can carry immensely heavy loads, their tears have healing powers, and they make highly faithful pets." (CS 12)
