Lily Potter (née Evans), born 30 January, 1960, was a muggle-born witch and the mother of Harry Potter. She was the younger sister of Petunia Dursley. She was sorted into Gryffindor house at Hogwarts. She married James Potter and had a son, Harry Potter. In the first wizarding war she was a member of the original Order of the Phoenix, and together with her husband she was murdered by Lord Voldemort on the 31 October, 1981, leaving behind her then one year old son.
Born: 30 January, 1960
Died: 31 October, 1981, in Godric's Hollow
Blood Status: Muggle-born
Lily grew up with her parents and sister until the age of eleven, when she first received her Hogwarts letter. Her magical abilities were revealed to her by Severus Snape, whom she befriended whilst playing in a deserted playground with Petunia. After receiving her Hogwarts letter, her relationship with Petunia quickly deteriorated, who branded her a freak as she left for Hogwarts. On the train she shared a compartment with Snape and met the Marauders for the first time, who she soon disliked as they teased Snape. Lily was sorted into Gryffindor at Hogwarts, whereas Snape was sorted into Slytherin.
As she got older she argued with Snape over his choice of friends, showing an intense hatred of the Dark Arts that would continue for the rest of her life. This eventually resulted in the breakdown of their friendship after he called her a Mudblood in their fifth year. She also hated the Marauders, especially James Potter, but this changed in her seventh year when he turned his behaviour around and they started dating. She was Head Girl during seventh year and probably a Prefect too.
After she left Hogwarts she joined the Order of the Phoenix and, along with James, was said to have faced Lord Voldemort personally three times. She married James soon after leaving school and became pregnant with Harry. Harry's Christening was quiet and hurried, with Sirius Black, his godfather, the only guest, for fear of Voldemort. It is unclear whether Harry's birth and Christening took place just before or some time after the Potters went into hiding. Sybill Trelawney had made a prophecy foretelling that their son would possibly be the one to destroy Lord Voldemort, forcing Lily and James to go into hiding in Godric's Hollow. A Fidelius Charm was placed upon their home and she and James originally decided that Sirius Black should be the Secret Keeper, but Sirius thought that would be too obvious and suggested Peter Pettigrew instead. Peter was a traitor and gave their whereabouts to Voldemort, who attacked the house in order to kill Harry. After James was murdered, Voldemort gave Lily the option to step aside and save herself but Lily refused, preferring to die for her son. Voldemort killed her but her sacrifice gave Harry protection and caused Voldemort's spell to backfire. Lily was unaware that her sacrifice would provide important protection for her son, Ms. Rowling says; she was simply doing what any normal mother would do.
Portrayals within films
Lily is portrayed as an adult by Geraldine Somerville in all eight Harry Potter films. She is portrayed as a teenager by Susie Shinner in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and as a child by Ellie Darcey-Alden in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
Lily is described as being very pretty with long dark red hair. Her eyes are emerald green and almond-shaped, exactly the same as Harry's eyes.
Lily is shown as being very hot-tempered through her arguments with James, but she was also extremely compassionate and courageous. JK Rowling has described her as being popular at school and according to Slughorn, she was charming, vivacious and witty.
Magical accomplishments and skills
Lily was considered a very bright and gifted student and was especially talented at Potions. Due to her skill, she was singled out by Slughorn to join the Slug Club and became one of his favourite students. She also defied Voldemort three times, which indicates that she was very talented at Defence Against the Dark Arts.
Lily's parents, Mr and Mrs Evans, were Muggles and were immensely proud of their magical daughter, although they died before she did. Lily married James Potter soon after Hogwarts and had a son, Harry, who she unfortunately wasn't able to raise. Her sister Petunia married Vernon Dursley and they had a son called Dudley, Lily's nephew. Lily did not get on well with the Dursleys although she appeared to be friends with Petunia before going to Hogwarts.
