Joanne ("Jo") Rowling, also known under the penname J.K. Rowling, is the creator of the Harry potter series. Ms Rowling is British, and currently lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Name and Background
Joanne Rowling was born July 5, 1965. Her parents were Peter Rowling (with whom she is now estranged) and Anne Volant Rowling (who died from Multiple Sclerosis in 1990.) She has a younger sister, Dianne. She spent her childhood in Gloucestershire and wrote compulsively from an early age. She is known to have been bookish and bit of a know-it-all, which is where her inspiration for Hermione came from. Rowling moved to Chepstow at the age of nine, which she apparently hated, and continued to devour books and write them herself. She discovered the autobiography "Hons and Rebels", by Jessica Mitford, and also "A Kestrel for a Knave", by Barry Hines, which apparently influenced her as well. As for her know-it-all habits, she "loosened up" as a teenager, apparently smoking into her curtains, drinking, and hoping for a way out of the tiny country town where she lived. This came in the form of university in Exeter, although it wasn't too far away.
