"An' they haven' invented a spell our Hermione can't do"
Rubeus Hagrid[src]

Hermione Jean Granger, born 19th September 1979, is the only daughter of Muggle dentists Mr and Mrs Granger. She learned, at the age of eleven, that she was a witch and had been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and was sorted into Gryffindor house.

Academically brilliant, Hermione quickly became known as the 'brightest witch of her age'. She made friends with Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley during her first year (who originally thought she was obnoxious and a "know-it-all") when a troll attacked her in the Girl's Bathroom. This friendship continued into the second year, when Hermione became the victim of a basilisk released from the Chamber of Secrets and was petrified. During her third year, Hermione was given a time turner to fit in all the lessons she was taking, this later became instrumental in savingSirius Black and Buckbeak the hippogriff from their deaths. She held a key role in Harry's success during the Triwizard Tournament and advocated the welfare of House elf setting up "S.P.E.W" or Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, in her fourth year. In 1995, she was the driving force behind the creation of Dumbledore's Army, and fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in 1996, and in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and the Battle over Little Whinging in 1997. She joined Harry and Ron in the quest to find Lord Voldemort's horcruxes, later participating in the Battle of Hogwarts in which she destroyed the Hufflepuff cup horcrux.

Hermione eventually returned to her education at Hogwarts, completing her seventh year. She later entered employment in the Ministry of Magic, furthering her cause for the better treatment of house-elves before gaining promotion to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. She eventually married Ron, and they have two children, Rose and Hugo Weasley.

[edit] Early Life

Hermione grew up with her dentist parents in the muggle world, oblivious to the existence of the Wizarding community. She always wanted her front teeth shortened but they refused to allow it. She found out aged eleven that she was a witch and, after getting her school supplies, began to study magic and attempt a few basic spells.

[edit] Character Development

Initially Hermione is by principle rule-abiding and with an unquestioning trust in authorities. During her friendship with Harry and Ron, however, she learns that not all authorities are to be trusted, and rules not always reasonable nor ethic.

Hermione journeyed to Hogwarts aboard the Hogwarts Express, here meeting Neville Longbottom. She changed into her Hogwarts robes before agreeing to help Neville find his escaped toad, and during the search she was introduced to Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Crossing the Black Lake she shared a boat with Harry, Ron and Neville, and during the Sorting ceremony she was sorted into Gryffindor house, although the Sorting Hat strongly considered placing her in Ravenclaw.

Initially Hermione was very unpopular with her classmates, especially with Ron Weasley. However, after being saved from a troll by Harry and Ron, the two boys became her best friends.

Hermione played a crucial role in saving the Philosopher's Stone from Lord Voldemort, and was awarded fifty house points for this at the end-of-year feast, thereby helping Gryffindor to win the House Cup. Her reaction to this was to bury her head in her arms, probably crying happy tears.

[edit] Characterization

[edit] Name

Author J.K. Rowling chose the name "Hermione" from Shakespeare's "A Winter's Tale", however J.K Rowling has said that the Shakespearean Hermione and the Harry Potter Hermione have very little in common. Rowling needed an unusual name to match Hermione's clever and swotty behavior. There was much disparaging concerning Hermione's name with various wrong attempts at its pronunciation. The correct pronunciation being: Her-MY-oh-knee.

[edit] Outward Appearance

Hermione is said to have had bushy brown hair and brown eyes. She also had rather large front teeth, which she ended up magically shrinking in her fourth year at Hogwarts after being hit by a hex by Draco Malfoy. She had a bossy voice that often became shrill when she was annoyed or angered.

Hermione's physical appearance is never particularly focused on until book four when Hermione attends the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum. Her hair is sleek and shiny and placed in an elegant hairstyle and she wears a floaty periwinkle dress. Hermione receives compliments from her classmates, including Parvati Patil. This is the first time that she seems to have gained the attention of both Ronald Weasley and Harry Potter not just for her intelligence or personality but also for her physical appearance.
