Hagrid purchases Hedwig from Eeylops Owl Emporium as a gift for Harry.^[1] Harry Potter names his owl "Hedwig" after a name he found in A History of Magic. Hedwig is a good hunter and kept bringing back Harry dead mice.^[2]

Harry Potter almost forgets Hedwig when he is rescued from Privet Drive by Ron, Fred, and George Weasley in a flying Ford Anglia. Hedwig's loud screech wakes up Vernon Dursley and he sees that Harry is making a run for it.^[3]

Hedwig was itercepted and injured by Dolores Umbridge, while she was sending a letter to Harry from Sirius. Harry takes Hedwig to Proffessor Grupplyplank to cure her.

Hedwig is killed by a killing curse, when Harry was being taken to a safehouse (Tonks'parents house).
