Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore. Harris, suffering from Hodgkin's lymphoma, had told David Heyman not to recast the role, determined to portray the character in the third film. However, Heyman was forced to shortly after Harris's death. While Harris's family showed an interest in close friend Peter O'Toole playing the character, it was widely rumored that Ian McKellen would take the part. However, McKellen denied all such rumors, as he had played the similar character Gandalf in ''The Lord of the Rings'', and as Harris had called McKellen a "dreadful" actor. Michael Gambon was chosen to portray the character for the remainder of the series, joining the primary cast in this film.
