Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort's immortality and destruction- the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must rely on each other more than ever, but there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.
Meanwhile, the Wizarding World has become a dangerous place for anyone that opposes the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort's Death Eaters have infiltrated the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort...alive. Harry's only hope is to find the horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale- the legend of the Deathly Hallows. If the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks.
Synopsis For Part 2
Plot For Part 1
During the summer of 1997 Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour speaks to the Wizarding World about how the Ministry will be staying strong during Lord Voldemort's return to power. Meanwhile Harry Potter sees the Dursleys pack up their car to leave Privet Drive while Hermione Granger wipes the memories of her parents to remove the connection between them. Similarly at Malfoy Manor, Lord Voldemort is holding a meeting of the death eaters to prepare themselves for the upcoming events. As Severus Snape arrives at the meeting he clears up when Harry will be taken from Privet Drive after different ideas of when this will take place emerged. During the meeting, Voldemort announces he will need the wand of another to kill Harry and chooses the wand of the recently out of prison, Lucius Malfoy. He then proceeds to test the wand by killing the captured Muggle Studies Professor from Hogwarts, Charity Burbage, who had been levitating above them during the meeting. Charity tried pleading to Snape for her release but he did nothing and she was subsequently killed and fed to Voldemort's snake, Nagini.
A few days later, many of the members of The Order of the Phoenix arrive to help Harry safely reach the Burrow. Because they cannot reach the Burrow with normal means of transportation such as the Floo Network or by apparating, they must travel by brooms, thestrals and Hagrid's motorbike. The plan is to disguise six of the other order members (Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Fred and George Weasley, Fleur Delacour and Mundungus Fletcher) would take polyjuice potion to all look like Harry, so the death eaters won't know which Harry is which. At first Harry is hesitant but eventually they convince him into doing it. Harry is paired with Hagrid and as the flight takes place the group are immediately pursued by death eaters who chase them in the skies and try to hit them with curses. The real Harry is joined by Hedwig, who was released earlier and begins to fly around him. During the chase Hedwig is hit by a killing curse thus revealing the true Harry so Voldemort soon joins the chase and flies after Harry. While trying to escape from Voldemort, Harry unintentionally hits Voldemort's curse with his own spell and breaks Lucius' wand. Having been defeated again Voldemort must stay behind as Harry and Hagrid reach the burrow safely.
Knowing that they have been betrayed, The Order are angry and nervous. An injured George Weasley arrives without an ear and the group tends to him as the rest of the pairs arrive. Eventually, Bill Weasley returns to the group with Fleur who informs the group that Mad-Eye Moody had been killed after Mundungus fled at the sight of Voldemort. Feeling guilty about the people who have been hurt because of him, Harry attempts to leave in the middle of the night but is stopped by Ron who convinces him to stay for Bill and Fleur's wedding.
As the setup for the wedding continues, Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour arrives to meet with Harry, Ron and Hermione in relation to the will left by Albus Dumbledore. For Ron, he left his deluminator, for Hermione, his copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard and for Harry he left the Golden Snitch that Harry caught in his first Quidditch match as well as the Sword of Gryffindor, which he could not give to Harry as it had gone missing and was not Dumbledore's to give. At the wedding of Bill and Fleur, Harry talks with Elphias Doge who was a friend of Dumbledore. They are soon joined by Ron's Aunt Muriel who told pieces of Dumbledore's past which Harry had no idea about. The wedding is soon interrupted by the Patronus of Kingsley Shacklebolt who tells the guests that Rufus Scrimgeour has been killed, The Ministry had fallen and the death eaters were coming. Almost immediately, death eaters arrive to wreck havoc and Harry must escape with Ron and Hermione who apparate into Muggle London.
While in a small coffee shop discussing what to do next, they are attacked by two disguised death eaters. A rough skirmish takes place between death eaters, Antonin Dolohov and Thorfinn Rowle and the trio and they manage to subdue them, the waitress in the back totally unaware of what was taking place. After deciding to wipe their memories instead of killing them, they make their way to 12 Grimmauld Place to hide out. While there they figure out that the mysterious person named R.A.B was actually the brother of Sirius Black, Regulus Black. They also find out that Mundungus Fletcher had stolen the locket as told by the house elf Kreacher, and send Kreacher to find him and bring him back.
Pius Thicknesse who is working with the Death Eaters has now taken over the position of Minister of Magic and decrees that all witches and wizards will be subject to screening regarding their blood status. Harry becomes the most wanted wizard in Britain and is labelled "Undesirable No. 1". Still at Grimmauld Place, Harry has a vision of Voldemort finding wand maker, Gregovich whom he tortures answers out of before executing him. Kreacher later returns with Mundungus Fletcher with the help of Dobby the house elf. Mundungus says that he was forced to give the locket to a woman at the Ministry to save himself from being arrested and they soon find out that the woman was Dolores Umbridge, Harry's Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher from a couple of years ago.
The trio then use polyjuice potion to take the identity of three Ministry officials so they can sneak into the Ministry and find Umbridge and the locket. As they settle into the elevator to think of a plan, Ron has to go fix a charm in Yaxley's office, Hermione follows Umbridge to the courtroom while Harry sneaks into Umbridge's office in search of the locket. After not finding the locket, Harry meets up with Ron in the elevator and go down to the courtrooms to find Hermione. While there, they see Umbridge interrogating the wife of the man Ron is impersonating, Mary Cattermole with the locket currently around Umbridge's neck. After stunning Umbridge and retrieving the locket, the trio are chased out the Ministry and into a forest.
Once they are safely in the forest, Harry and Hermione discover that Ron has been splinched so Hermione tends to him. Once Ron is better, the trio attempt to destroy the locket/horcrux but unfortunately cannot destroy it. Taking turns wearing the locket, they decide to begin the search for the rest of the horcruxes. As each one wears the locket, they begin to feel more aggravated and suspicious which affects Ron the most who is jealous over the time Harry is spending with Hermione. They also begin to ponder the mystery of the snitch which Hermione then tells him tht the snitch can remember the person who caught it and that it can only open for that person.
During one of the nights the trio are on the run, Hermione realizes the reason why Godric Gryffindor's Sword was left to him by Dumbeldore. She tells Harry that the sword is actually goblin made which means that it imbibes any substance that will make it stronger. Since killing Salazar Slytherin's Basilisk with the sword, it has now got the power of basilisk venom, one of the rare substances that can destroy horcruxes. During this discovery, Ron finally snaps from wearing the locket and has a go at Harry. He storms off in anger after stating that they're not going anywhere with this leaving a shocked Harry and Hermione behind. Apparating from their current campsite the day after, the pair leave any hope of Ron finding them again leaving Hermione saddened. The pair later cheer up again as Harry invites Hermione to a friendly dance where the pair smile and laugh. The next day while pondering over the snitch again he remembers how he almost swallowed it the first time he caught it and then presses it to his lips. Writing appears which says "I open at the close" but Hermione and Harry couldn't figure out what it meant.
Believing the sword may be there and with Harry also wanting to visit there, the pair decides to visit Godric's Hollow. Hermione sees that it's Christmas Eve while they walk into the graveyard. As Hermione discovers the grave of Ignotus Peverell, she finds Harry standing in front of his parents' grave and begins to comfort him. They soon notice that they are being watched by a woman who appears to be Bathilda Bagshot who signals for them to follow her to her house. At her house Harry recognizes a boy in a photo and asks Bathilda about it although she doesn't answer. While they are upstairs 'Bathilda' begins to speak Parseltongue to Harry who the responds. Not realizing it's a trap, Bathilda's body falls away to reveal Voldemort's snake, Nagini who attacks Harry. Hearing noise from above, Hermione runs upstairs to see blood and fighting between Nagini and Harry. Although Harry was bitten, the two manage to escape.
Once Harry awakes he finds himself with Hermione in Forest of Dean, where Hermione and her parents once visited. Hermione tells Harry that his wand broke and that he regognized the man in "The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore" from Godric's Hollow. She tells him that the man is Gellert Grindelwald, a dark wizard who Dumbledore defeated in 1945. That night while Harry is keeping guard, a silver doe Patronus appears and he follows it to a frozen pond. He then sees that the Sword of Gryffindor lies at the bottom of the pond and strips off and tries to dive in and get it. Sensing the power of the sword, the locket Harry is wearing attempts to strangle him but Harry is soon saved by Ron who also retrieves the sword. Using parseltongue, Harry opens the locket where Ron must destroy it. It envisions apparitions in front of Ron including spiders and a naked Harry and Hermione kissing. Angered by this, Ron takes the courage to destroy the locket and plunges the sword into it, destroying it.
Once Harry and Ron return to the tent, Hermione is angry at Ron for returning though wonders how he found them. He explains that the Deluminator Dumbledore left him expelled the voice of Hermione a few days earlier and he proceeded to click it. A small blue light emerged and went into his chest, he apparated and then arrived to see the silver doe. Hermione later proposes a visit to Xenophilius Lovegood who could explain the symbol seen in "The Life and Times of Albus Dumbledore" and around his neck. Ron agrees to get on Hermione's good side so they end up arriving at the Lovegood house. He reveals that the symbol represents the Deathly Hallows which Hermione then proceeds to read "The Tale of the Three Brothers" out loud. The story tells them about the Three Deathly Hallows; The Elder wand, which holds incredible power and is rumored to be unstoppable; The Resurrection Stone, a stone that can bring back those who have died; and the Cloak of Invisibility, which turns the wearer invisible. Xenophilius then reveals that his daughter Luna Lovegood had been captured and he would exchange the trio for her safety. Death eaters soon arrive and the trio apparate to the forest where Snatchers are waiting for them. After a brief chase, Hermione disfigures Harry's face so he would be unrecognizable before they are caught by the Snatchers.
The Snatchers deliver the trio to Malfoy Manor where Bellatrix Lestrange notices they are in possession of the Sword of Gryffindor. She then proceeds to lock Harry and Ron up with other prisoners Luna Lovegood, Ollivander and Griphook the goblin as she then tortures Hermione on information on how she got the sword. Harry once again has another vision of Voldemort, who he now interrogating Grindelwald in prison, which shows him that after a duel long ago, Dumbledore was now in possession of the Elder Wand, which Voldemort seeks. Using a magical mirror from Sirius Black, Harry sees a man staring at him who sends Dobby for help. Harry asks Dobby to apparate with Luna and Ollivander first and then return for everyone else. With Dobby's help and after a brief battle, they rescue Hermione and proceed to disapparate along with Griphook the goblin. As they are escaping, Bellatrix throws the dagger which she tortured Hermione with at the group where they soon arrive near Shell Cottage, the home of Bill and Fleur. While on the beach they discover Dobby was hit by the knife and Harry begins to cradle him in his arms. Unfortunately, Dobby soon dies in his arms and the group gives him a proper burial on the beach.
The end of the movie sees Voldemort breaking into the tomb of Dumbledore, splitting open the coffin and stealing the elder wand. He then uses the power to send huge lightning sparks into the sky as the clouds overhead begin to get darker.

Differences from the book
There will be a scene near the beginning of the film where Hermione is shown performing memory charms on her parents and then leaving her home. In a few TV spots, it has been shown that Dobby appears at Grimmauld Place with Kreacher. Near the middle of the film, there is a scene where, in an effort to cheer Hermione up, Harry asks her to dance. This is very controversial as there are many fans who love the idea, and just as many hating the idea of adding in a scene that was never in the book. Dean was not present in Malfoy Manner, only Luna and Mr. Olivander were there. Harry never had the chance to think about either going after the Hollows or the Horocuxes, immediately after he buried Dobby, he sees Voldemort take the Elder Wand.
