Harry Potter is looking forward to returning for his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after a summer spent with his aunt Petunia Dursley, uncle Vernon Dursley, and cousin Dudley Dursley. Unfortunately, a house elf named Dobby comes to him out of the blue and warns him that he must not return to Hogwarts. To ensure that he will not, Dobby performs magic that Harry is subsequently blamed for. As a result, Harry's aunt and uncle lock him in his room, preventing him from going to school.
Ron Weasley and his brothers, suspecting that something is wrong, come to rescue Harry in their father's flying car, and they all go off to Hogwarts together after spending some time in the Burrow.
As the year at Hogwarts goes on, dangers become apparent. Students are being petrified and strange messages are being left on the walls about the heir of Slytherin and the Chamber of Secrets. Harry's year becomes even worse when he discovers that he can speak Parseltounge, the language of snakes. Because of this ability, which is linked to Salazar Slytherin, everyone begins to accuse him of being the heir of Slytherin, who is behind the petrifications.
