This article is about Creatures in general. For a list with links to articles about specific Creatures, see Category:Creatures.

Creatures are generally split into three groups; 'beings', 'beasts' and 'spirits'. In the Ministry of Magic three divisions exist, the Beast Division, the Being Division and the Spirit Division. Beasts are defined as being distinct from 'beings' in that a being 'has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws'. However centaurs and merpeople who would fit the definition of 'beings' prefer to be known as beasts and some highly intelligent creatures are classed as beasts because they are unable to overcome their brutal nature.[1]

[edit] Golden Snidget

The golden snidget nearly became extinct due to being used in Quidditch as early as 1262. Prior to that time, Snidget hunting was a pasttime of wizards and witches. As the tiny, somewhat rotund, little bird was extremely fast and agile, it was a coup for a wizard or witch to catch one with their bare hands. Sadly, the little snidget was often squashed by the wizard who captured it. Once the snidget was introduced in the magical game of Quidditch, its survival as a species was threatened.

[edit] Ministry of Magic Classifications

The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures gives classifications to all known beasts, beings, and spirits. There are five categories. They are as follows:[2]:

XXXXX Known wizard killer / impossible to train or domesticate
XXXX Dangerous / requires specialist knowledge / skilled wizard may handle
XXX Competant wizard should cope
XX Harmless / may be domesticated
X Boring
