This article is about Creatures in general. For a list with links to articles about specific Creatures, see Category:Creatures.
Creatures are generally split into three groups; 'beings', 'beasts' and 'spirits'. In the Ministry of Magic three divisions exist, the Beast Division, the Being Division and the Spirit Division. Beasts are defined as being distinct from 'beings' in that a being 'has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws'. However centaurs and merpeople who would fit the definition of 'beings' prefer to be known as beasts and some highly intelligent creatures are classed as beasts because they are unable to overcome their brutal nature.[1]
