 Sixth book
Harry Potter first meets Cormac McLaggen on the Hogwarts Express, when new teacher Horace Slughorn invites them both to join the Slug Club - a groups of Slughorn's favourites made up of talented or well-connected students. Cormac is the latter, his uncle having been friends with Rufus Scrimgeour before he became Minister for Magic. Unlike Harry and his friends Neville Longbottom and Ginny Weasley, who were also invited, Cormac seems to enjoy himself.
Harry meets Cormac again when as captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team, he holds the Quidditch trials. Cormac seems to expect some sort of favouritism from Harry for their connection in the Slug Club, however Harry asks him to stand with the others. Cormac was up against the Keeper of last year, Harry's best friend Ron Weasley. He performs well, drawing with Ron. However Hermione Granger interferes with the trial and uses the Confundus Charm on Cormac, causing him to miss blocking his final goal. As a result Ron kept his position, however Cormac was the reserve Keeper for the team as the second best performer.
