Charity Burbage was the Professor of Muggle Studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the start of the school year in 1993 to her death during the summer of 1997. Whilst teaching at Hogwarts her main philosophy in was that Muggles and Wizards and Witches aren't really much different from each other. She did this through teaching about the life of a Muggle and how they live in a world without magic.

Professor Charity Burbage begins her first day of Hogwarts in 1993 after replacing the male teacher before her. Her Muggle Studies office was filled with different Muggle toys and instruments and was located on the first floor of the castle. Despite the fact that Percy Weasley describes Muggle Studies a 'soft option' compared to Transfiguration, he does say "Wizards should have a thorough understanding of the non-magical community, particularly if they're thinking of working in close contact with them." With the use of her time turner, Hermione Granger takes Professor Burbage's class in her third year and says that "It'll be fascinating to learn about Muggles from a wizard's point of view."

[edit] Deathly Hallows

During the summer of 1997, Professor Burbage was abducted by death eaters and brought to Malfoy Manor. Voldemort stated the reason for capture was the view she had on the equality of Muggles and Witches and Wizards and how they are not so different. At the table where she was hoisted above her fellow Hogwarts Professor, Severus Snape, sat and she begged him for mercy and to not be killed. Professor Snape couldn't say anything so she was subsequently killed by Lord Voldemort. Her body was then eated by Voldemort's snake, Nagini. [1] The cause of her disappearance was unknown to Hogwarts and The Order of the Phoenix. In seperate articles in The Daily Prophet it first said she resigned and in the other it stated that she was in hiding. The now mandatory Muggle Studies classes at Hogwarts were then taken over by Alecto Carrow who took an entirely different view on the subject. She taught that "Muggles are like animals, stupid and dirty, and how they drive wizards into hiding by being vicious toward them, and how the natural order is being re-established", which was the main view shared by Lord Voldemort an his death eaters. [2]

[edit] Portrayals within films

In the film adaption of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows she is portrayed by Carolyn Pickles and is seen as a middle aged witch with dusty blonde hair and a saddened, tired face.

[edit] Characterisation

[edit] Personality and Skills

Charity had a strong stance on the view that Muggles were practically equal to Wizards and Witches and also supported Muggle Rights. She is known to give a lot of homework to the students such as an essay entitled "Explain why Muggles need electricity." Being Muggle Studies teacher she would have been very knowledgeable on Muggles and their lives. If she attended Hogwarts she would have most likely received high scores in both her O.W.Ls and N.E.W.Ts
