Bill Weasley is a pure-blood wizard and the first of seven children born to Molly and Arthur Weasley. He works as a curse breaker for Gringotts Bank and married Fleur Delacour. He became a member of the Order of the Phoenix when Albus Dumbledore brought it back after Voldemort's return in 1995, and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.

[edit] Appearances

[edit] First book

Bill had already left Hogwarts three years before Harry Potter and his youngest brother Ron.[1] Ron told Harry that he was in Africa working for Gringotts Bank. As a result Harry did not meet Bill for some time. He learnt from Ron on the Hogwarts Express that Bill had been Head Boy at the school and that due to the Weasley family's lack of money he had to wear hand-me-downs such as Bill's robes. Ron was embarrassed to admit to this, though Harry didn't judge him.[2]

Ron was also finding the prospect of living up to Bill's reputation and that of his other older brothers daunting. When he sees himself in the Mirror of Erised wearing a Head Boy's badge like the one Bill wore he was thrilled at the sight of a future where he was the best of all his brothers.[3]

[edit] Second book

Bill was presumably still busy working for Gringotts in 1992 as when Harry was rescued from the Dursleys by Ron, Fred and George and was taken to The Burrow[4], Bill never visited in that time. Later that year when a message was scribed on the wall of the second floor corridor at Hogwarts declaring that The Chamber of Secrets had been opened, Ron thinks that Bill might have mentioned a secret chamber in the school.[5] Over the Christmas holidays Fred, George and Bill's youngest sibling Ginny decided to stay at Hogwarts despite an invitation to visit Bill in Egypt with their parents.[6] At the end of the year when it was revealed that Ginny had been the one to open the Chamber whilst possessed by Voldemort, she is terrified that she would be expelled after having wanted to go ever since Bill went (ever since she was a year old, in other words).[7]

[edit] Third book

During the summer holidays before Harry's third year at Hogwarts, Ron sends Harry a cutting from The Daily Prophet in his birthday card. His dad had won some money and they had used the money to take the whole family on month-long holiday to visit Bill in Egypt. There he had taken them round the tombs, some of which had contained rather grim skeletons. There was a photo of all nine Weasleys accompanying the article, which is the first time we see a picture of him.

Ron had also bought Harry a Pocket Sneakoscope there for his birthday. Bill didn't believe it works and dismissed it as rubbish sold to tourists after it kept lighting up at dinner, but apparently Fred and George had put beetles in his soup that evening.[8] Also it's possible that Scabbers had set it off.

[edit] Fourth book

Harry meets Bill for the first time when he visits the Burrow during the summer holidays in order to see the Quidditch World Cup. Harry had to change his opinion of him, as after he had heard that Bill had been Head Boy and worked for Gringotts he had thought Bill would be a stickler for rules and rather like his younger brother Percy. However Harry now decides that Bill is cool with his stylish clothes and hair.

Bill and Charlie stayed in Fred and George's room during the holidays, meaning that the twins had to move in with Harry and Ron. When Bill and Charlie are asked by their mother to set up the tables, they decide to have a contest and each make a table fly in the air and smash them into one another, trying to knock the other's table out of the air. This continued until Percy had enough and called out from his room that he wanted quiet. At this Bill makes a wry comment about his work, but both older brothers stop and set the table up, Bill easily reattaching the leg. During the meal Molly is pained by Bill's earring, which seems to be new. He is relaxed about it, arguing that at the bank they don't mind what he looks like. She also expresses a wish to cut his hair and Ginny helps to defend him.[9]

Unlike the younger members of the family going to see the Quidditch World Cup, Bill gets a lie-in the following morning as he has the ability to Apparate to the camp site at a more reasonable hour than the Portkey that they must catch.[10] Bill, Charlie and Percy get there in time for lunch (which is breakfast for the others) and are joined briefly by Ludo Bagman and Mr Crouch. After lunch they all get souvenirs, Bill purchasing a green rosette for Ireland.[11]

[edit] Characterisation

[edit] Outward appearance

He was tall, with long hair that he had tied back with a ponytail. He was wearing an earring with what looked like a fang dangling from it. His clothes would not have looked out of place at a rock concert, except that Harry recognised his boots to be made, not of leather, but of dragon hide.[9]

Bill Weasley was initially a good-looking member of the Weasley family, with red hair. The length of his hair is an object of disagreement between him and his mother, who will give him a haircut given half a chance. An encounter with the werewolf Fenrir Greyback left him scarred, though not a full werewolf himself.
