"Casual Vacancy" to Be Made into BBC Miniseries
December 03, 2012, 10:20 AM
The Casual Vacancy, J.K. Rowling's latest novel, will be made into a miniseries for the BBC, it's been reported today. BBC One and BBC Drama have entered an exclusive adaptation deal; it wil be produced by an independent production company produced by J.K. Rowling's agent, Neil Blair (on behalf of his agency, The Blair Partnership) and Rick Senat.
JKR will "collaborate closely" with the project. The number and length of episodes has not yet been decided. It is expected to air in 2014.
JKR said of the adaptation:
"I always felt that, if it were to be adapted, this novel was best suited to television and I think the BBC is the perfect home."

I agree it would be well suited to BBC. Hopefully it’ll be picked up by BBC America!
‘I think the BBC is the prefect home’? Misspelling, or a Freudian slip? lol!
Never read the book, but I think its great that its such a favourite! Talk about a tv series already? XD Haha I never thought of it before but wouldn’t it make more sense if BBC America was called ABC?
I’m nearly done with the book, and it definitely lends itself to a soap opera format! The trick will be keeping kids from watching, since it is a very harsh, very adult story.
I loved Casual Vacancy, those characters stay with you long after reading! I finished it about a week after publication and they still crop up in my thoughts every once in a while. So excited!
Please BBC look at Shane Meadows to direct. That man would be perfect just look at This Is England 86 on Channel 4, talk to Shane Meadows!
Suited for the BBC for sure….
I have not read the book yet, but if it’s dramatic and edgy it will go well with a BBC series :-p
The English newspapers have not greeted this news enthusiastically. They ask " Why is taxpayers money being wasted on the socialist misery porn of Jo Rowling ?
A more accurate description of the awful " Casual Vacancy" I have never read.
Congrats to her! I always thought it was going to be a TV series because it just didn’t seem the movie type and I was right.
Congrats to Jo!
Not sure how any Potter fan can call Casual Vacancy awful – no, it isn’t Potter, nor is it meant to be. But the book is intriguing and well done in its own right. I hope that Masterpiece or BBC America picks up the rights to show the mini-series here in the US – I would love to see how it is adapted.
Can’t wait for it to come out on TV.
I’m glad it’s going to be a mini-series. I loved Casual Vacancy and not because it’s by Rowling, but because a lot of the people in that novel I feel like I know in real life, which is not a very nice thing to say considering these characters were so realistic yet such awful people. The sad part is the only character I felt that I truly liked was Andrew (well not exactly truly), Sukhvinder and Krystal (yes I know she was slightly off, but considering her upbringing she turned out pretty well)
