J.K. Rowling, Emma Watson Attend Pride of Britain Awards

Late Tuesday, author J. K. Rowling was honored at the Pride of Britain awards, an award ceremony which "honor those real life heroes in the UK, such as: an air stewardess who delivered and battled to save a 1lb premature baby at 30,000 ft. to Britain’s oldest man, the last First World war volunteer, who still visits schools to educate children at the age of 111 years old." Actress Emma Watson, who was also in attendance, was chosen by Jo herself to present the honor which was given to Jo for the following:

"Twelve years ago, a woman sitting in Edinburgh coffee shop could be seen scribbling in a notebook, creating the life of a schoolboy wizard. Since the success of Harry Potter, Jo has inspired a new generation of avid readers, and she has encouraged a whole host of wannabe writers to put pen to paper. But despite a full-time writing schedule, Jo is also President of the charity One Parent Families, the patron of The Multiple Sclerosis Society and co-founder of the Children’s High Level Group, helping young people in care."

The first photos from the event have started to appear online. You can see some early pictures of Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), and Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling (both wearing chic black outfits) here via WireImage. Additional photos of Jo (looking just gorgeous) here via the Associated Press, via WENN and via London Features International.

Others attending this event including UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Prince Charles, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, and UK audio book narrator Stephen Fry among others. These awards will be broadcast Wednesday, October 10 on UK channel ITV1 9:00pm – 10:30pm.

Dear Leaky Cauldron,
I'm confused - I thought Jim Dale read the audio books for the Potter series, but I've heard mention of a version by Stephen Fry. What's the scoop?

A Devoted Reader

Dear Devoted Reader,

You're not confused - just American. ;) In Great Britain, actor/writer/comedian Stephen Fry narrates the audiobooks; the Grammy award-winning Jim Dale versions are for sale in the States. While fans love to debate who is the better reader, the fact is that both versions are outstanding (Dale's is a performance, with different voices for each character, while Fry's is a more straight-up read). If you've only heard Dale's versions and would like to try Fry's, check out our Cauldron Shop.
