Good Morning Everybody!!!!! IT’S FRIDAY!!! IT’S FRIDAY!!!!!!
I AM WISHING EVERYBODY TO HAVE A FANTASTIC DAY AND A DYNAMITE WEEKEND!!!!!!
WOW We are going to have about 45 degrees here today, and the SUN is shinning Brightly!!!!! lol
Good Morning ALL,
Jen It is always disappointed to be…well… disappointed in an evening at the theatre. I put such a premium on the experience it really hurts when the show doesn’t live up to my imagined specifications.
I never did stand through JERSEY BOYS. There was never a seat available and my feet and back were bothering me. The other ushers were fairly divided on how they felt about the show. They were either WILD about it, or, like me, not interested enough in seeing it to stand through it in the absence of a seat.
I tried a couple of times but it was actually a fairly “dark” show, at least from my perspective. The Four Seasons were nothing but a bunch of hoodlums who could sing. The language was nothing I have not heard before but they couldn’t express themselves without fully loaded vocabulary. I realize that is realistic to how they actually did speak and that is fine. I just didn’t feel like standing up, uncomfortable, in an overheated theatre to listen to it.
I sat out in the lobby where I could hear the music just fine without hearing all the crude talk.
One thing I did find annoying about the music was they, many times, did NOT play and entire song. They would start a number only to let it trail out as they went into their non musical narrative of the show. Or they would break into the chorus of a number and never do more than a few bars.
Many people were frustrated about not hearing ENTIRE songs.
I had a bad night last Saturday night. I was seating people on the main center aisle of the orchestra floor. It is an INCREDIBLY BUSY AISLE. I’ve never been on the premiere aisle before. In the door came a woman with a man in a wheel chair…
She had purchased aisle seats with the idea he was going to transfer himself from the wheel chair into the seat. Well, what she wasn’t told was that although she DID purchase aisle seats, she had purchased aisle seats on the last row. It isn’t a normal aisle seat… There is a wall at the back of the theatre with the last row recessed into it. In order to get to the aisle seat the man would have had to negotiate about 4 feet of wall.
Let me say, many ticketing facilities sell tickets for this theatre. When purchasing tickets you are not necessarily speaking to a person working in the theatre box office. Many people selling these tickets have never seen the physical building. They just see a seating chart and the seating chart makes it look as if there are no walls anywhere.
This woman was NOT HAPPY and she was personally NOT HAPPY at ME!!!! She wanted me to FIX IT and FIX IT NOW!!!! We were clogging the entrance to the aisle and no one could pass. I fought an almost overwhelming desire to tell her I was just a volunteer who seated people, that I did not actually work there and had no power. I controlled myself and attempted to behave professionally.
I excused myself, with her tickets in hand, and RAN to my head usher who told me to take them to the handicapped seating area. So, I went back and escorted them to handicapped seating. The woman was NOT PLEASED AT ALL!!!! Sitting in the handicapped area meant she was going to have to sit in an upholstered straight chair in the row behind her husband in his wheel chair. She informed me this was UNACCEPTABLE!!!! So, I ran to tell my head usher that her solution had not fixed anything and she needed to deal with it. (She is just a volunteer too but much higher on the food chain.)
By the time I made it back to my aisle the DICTATOR was there helping seat people…. I had abandoned my post to deal with the UNHAPPY woman. I told the DICTATOR what I had been dealing with and that the head usher had told me to transfer them to handicapped seating and she was still UNHAPPY.
The DICTATOR informed me that no one had the authority to transfer anyone to that area, that I needed to go check with the box office to check availability on those seats and deal with it. Why the HECK should I be the person to deal with ANGRY patrons? Why not HER?!!!! She is a paid employee.
So, I turned and went to the box office to find the ANGRY WOMAN there ahead of me, changing her seats to handicapped seating and obtaining a refund. She did NOT look the LEAST BIT less angry but I had done all I could do so I fled back to my aisle. I DO NOT LIKE the DICTATOR. That was UNFAIR.
Lady Hawke, The language usage is a crock! I grew up in the 50s and 60s. I do not know how boys and men talked when they were alone, but I do know they watched their mouths when women or children were present or within hearing distance.
Okay, I did not grow up in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia or Detroit. I grew up on Military Posts where a LOT of young men were away from their mothers and had unprecidented freedom for the first time in their lives.
The first time I heard the “F” bomb was when I was 11 and it was from a 9 year old boy, trying to shock. The next time I heard it, I was a senior in high school and it was from a classmate. The first time I heard it from a GI, I was 20.
And I dated a lot of GIs. The authors or the director or the actors put that language there for some unknown reason, not verisimilitude. The reality was that women and children were protected. In many cases we still are. I hear that word about 4 times more often from women than I do from men.
I work in an unusual State office in that we actually have more men than women in the office and our field personnel are almost all men. The language stays under control. True, we all have to watch our language on the phones to the public, but we do not get very many outside people actually in the office in the course of a month, maybe 6 or 7. And the language stays in check.
Evidently the “creative” people involved did not live through the era. Having every sentence contain crude or scatalogic references is not “creative” it is a sorry way of trying tto hide the fact that they are NOT creative, except in having the idea. The execution uses the gimmick of trying too shock rather than entertain or develop the idea well.
Okay, they did not speak like Rhodes Scholars, but few of us do. Still, there is no excuse for crudity for the sake of crudity and not being true to the era they claim to be depicting. ;)
Sorry for the rant, but “language” in what is supposed to be entertainment is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. They should pick up a dictionary or even a good thesarus instead of using the same dull crude and/or disgusting words. ;)
Oops! I was about to go off again. Sorry. ;)
They justified the language based on the notion of this is how these men would have spoken among themselves and we were watching “snapshots” of their behavior.
I still didn’t want to hear it.
Ugh, LH, that woman sounds awful! i can understand her being upset, BUT there was no reason to take it out on you or to be so unreasonable when you were clearly trying to help. I hate when people get like that; it’s definitely the worst part about dealing with the public. And the worst part is that people have gotten so used to the whole “the customer is always right” thing that they know they can get away with stuff if they make a scene. Sorry you had to deal with her – that really was unfair. (I guess the Dictator retains her name, even after trying to be nicer during the bad weather performance.)
I see Jersey Boys in May. It’s not one I’m dying to see, but I’ll give it a try since it comes with the subscription. That is both the plus and minus of the subscription. It gives me the push to see new shows that I wouldn’t buy tickets to otherwise, but sometimes I think I’d be better off just saving the money and going to see the ones I LOVE more often. Spring Awakening was the only example of a show that I had sort of wanted to see but probably wouldn’t have bought an individual ticket for yet I ended up coming away from it obsessed. Now I can’t wait for it to come back. Knowing that a discovery like that happened once is enough to make me want to keep trying new shows since I never know when I might be surprised by one like that again…but in general, I usually have a pretty good feel for which shows I will love from stuff like Tony performances.
Deanie, in general I agree with you about the whole language thing and throwing in swearing just for the shock value. The only thing I would throw out there in this case is that two of the original Four Seasons members (Frankie Valli and one other) were involved in the creation of the show, so I have to imagine that there may be at least a little bit of truth to the language. But I’m not sure if they were involved to that amount of detail as far a the script is concerned. I have heard the group compared to the Sopranos, so I guess I’m not that surprised.
Oh, and LH, I am disappointed to hear that they truncate songs; it will be very frustrating to be enjoying a song that I recognize and have it cut off. I’m glad I know ahead of time so I can be prepared!
Lurking and posting one very short post. :)
Waving madly at HUFF!
Huff – I am not posting here because I enjoy the new place a lot. I will keep up with our friends here but I really do want to be at the new place. It feels like home….It is just like this but a LOT better with the fonts, smileys and bigger avetars. You should give it a try. If you don’t like it after trying it, then I will see you here then. :)
I just managed to drag my stuff to the new placed and started unpacking, and now we’re moving back!
Hey Margo!! I don’t think we’re moving back. There’s too many perks on the other site. We’re just trying to convince a few stragglers to come over. Mainly a certain bug…
Okay, I’ll chance it. I have been trying to post here for about 20 hours with no luck.
This is a sleepy day. I have sirloin steak, potatoes and zuchini skewers for dinner. So, until it is time to cook the steak I can go do something else and I have no motivation. The daughter is putting pressure on me. I do need to go switch some things in the dryer or there will be no clothes for us to wear to leave the house.
We’ve had a busy day here! We have a birthday party tomorrow, and the birthday itself on Monday. Small daughter is very excited! I am looking forward to it a lot. I enjoy making birthdays and Christmas as special and magical as I can. (Without spoiling the kids, I hope!!)
I am really hoping that we can keep our Leaky corner, but it does seem that the new place is more popular in the current unreliability of Leaky. I wish wish wish everyone would sign up for the new site. I’d hate to lose touch :(
Please join up!
Hi PBB! How are you?
MM thanks for the reponse…. you make it very tempting…. tho I am loathe to add another site I need to feel the need to check… :S Hmmmmm…
Margo are you referring to an actual move (as in, moving to a new house) or the move to the other site? I think HW thought you were referring to the other website when she responded to you…
HW I’ve always been a straggler, thankyouverymuch. :P
asti sigh et tu? ;) just kidding… it would be good to keep in touch!! :)
