Haven’t checked in here for a bit. Life has been too chaotic. I’ve hardly been able to function.

DEANIE, we’ve missed you elsewhere.

“Elsewhere” has too many animated smileys and takes waaaaaayy too long to load at work and I almost never go anyplace online from home except my Ya groups, a couple of times a week. ;)

I do read “elsewhere” most days, but commenting is usually when the boss walks by and I can’t minimize it fast enough. ;)

“Elsewhere” should only be a ‘long load’ the first time after shutting down & starting back up. After that your cache should be updated, and subsequent posts & or refreshes will go quickly…

Won It doesn’t go quickly ever! Part of it is probably degradation of the wiring in our building.

We have T-1 service and at least one person was told, after much fussing and subsequent searching and troubleshooting, that the wires in the underfloor traceways were damaged. These wires have not been disturbed for years. I figure the mice probably chewed the insulation and caused the initial damage. Age and neglect probably advanced it quite a bit, too.

The budget is so tight that we do not know if the wiring for her computer will be replaced or if any solution will be forthcoming in the next 18 months. ;)

The joys of State employment! ;)

I shouldn’t complain, I do still have a job and because I have been here for 26 years, I also have a lot more job security than people hired within the last 10 years. As things stand now, I’m practically bulletproof, jobwise.

That could change, they are talking about “offering” early retirement to those with up to five years remaining until retirement eligibility. It seems to be the type of “offer” where if it is not taken, they will just eliminate the position and then be able to fire/lay-off the employee.

Then they would create a new job title and hire a new, young, lower salaried, lower benefit person.

The retirement package changed about 10 years ago and then again a year or two ago. The available benefits, while employed, are the same for all of us, but newer hires don’t have a very good retirement packages. And they don’t have the longevity which usually translates into higher salaries. Not that my salary is huge, but it is larger than someone hired more recently. ;)

Oops! Sorry, I did not mean to go off on a tangent. It is largely that the retirement/forced reirement thing is on my mind, since nothing is resolved about it yet. We mostly just have rumors from good sources, but rumors all the same. ;)

Bbl. ;)

Won, it doesn’t ever go quickly for me either. Any time I refresh the page or try to make a post, the whole thing reloads again, very slowly. Could some setting be preventing my computer from copying the site into its cache? Although it happens on both my home and work computers.

Hello ALL,

Strangely enough “elsewhere” is no slower to use than any other site on my laptop. I find I very infrequently even sit down at the desktop anymore. It is larger and faster than the laptop but it is tucked away but itself and using the laptop allows me to be anywhere else in the house I need to be.

DEANIE, have you tried just using the Quick Post at the other sight, instead of going into Post Reply with all the Smileys? All you have to do is post like you do here without having to change screens and without the distraction of the Smileys.

This is my day with my parents. I insisted my child go to school. I know she is not feeling well. She coughed all night. I heard her but she missed the first two days of school and she just had to go back. She is running a consistent low grade fever and the school requires no fever at all for attendance but I called the doctor’s office and they assured me that as it is allergy induced sinusitis with accompanying asthma related problems she is no threat to anyone at school.

They might yet send her home to me due to the distracting coughing but I needed her to at least go to school and acquire her homework she has missed so I can try to keep her caught up.

The pollen here is just awful. I know I have said it “elsewhere” but it is really terrible. It is all over everything. You can wipe it off the windows with your windshield wiper and watch it blow away. It is a thin crust all over everything outside. I even saw a layer of it on my keyhole and front door handle when I came home this morning. It is a haze of bright neon yellow green.

My eyes are itching relentlessly. We can’t go for our allergy shots because they won’t give them to us when we are already in distress. Just that much more of the allegen introduced to our systems could throw us over the line.

JEN, how is your nephew? It is so sad to have very sick children suffering so. A friend of mine from high school has an 18 month old nephew who managed to get away from his mother while they were dying eggs in the kitchen. She realized he wasn’t there and went to find him. He had pushed the screen out of the window and gone to the backyard and fallen in the pool. They fished him out but he is still in critical care in guarded condition. They don’t think he sustained any brain damage but they are concerned about some of his internal organs and his lungs, in particular. Ill and injured children are so sad and stressful.

It’s not my smiley that slow down the loading it is ALL of them. Is there a way to load the page without smileys at all? Of course if that’s what I ’m going to do, I will miss a lot of what is intended when reading posts by others. ;)

I did see that Felipe is going to clean up some of the smileys to see if that helps and to keep the holiday ones fun at the appropriate time of year. I’ll just wait to see if that helps. ;)

DS got a flat tire on the way home yesterday, so he’s spending his day off waiting for the tire store to tell him that his tires came in (he’s getting 2 not 4), and listening to the roofers hammer over his head at home.

The hound seems to be okay for now and the tire place said they have a 39 minute guarantee. Either they get the tires mounted and on the car within 39 minutes or you get $39 off your total bill. So when he has to leave, the hound will o nly be left alone with the noise for about an hour.

Much more worrying to me, though is the fact that the dumpster that was supposed to be delivered yesterday has not yet shown up so all the roofing trash is just all over the ground and the hound may get a nail or old staple in his foot after they leave. If the dumpster had been there this morning, the workers would have been fresh and might have done a more careful job than they will this evening when they are all tired and wanting to go home. They are supposed to clean up with an electromagnet, but it will only be as good as the operator is careful and thorough. Tired people tend to try and cut corners. ;)

THEY HAD A TEASER SHOWING JKR SAYING SHE WAS WRITING ANOTHER BOOK.

When the teaser finally came on….it was just an interview that Joe R. gave a newspaper recently…. saying that she was not against writing more stories about the Wizarding world. She would wait a few more years and write another series. YAYAYAYAY!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!! A few more years?????? :( :(

Morning all!

LH, that is absolutely awful! That is one of my biggest fears – well, that and pretty much ever injury that could befall the kids; I drive them crazy with the Be carefuls, Don’t do thats, and Stay right next to me’s. I will definitely keep that family in my thoughts. I hope everything turns out okay; the poor mother must be beside herself!

Fortunately, my nephew is fine now. It was diagnosed as gastroenteritis, which, according to wikipedia, is a leading cause of death among children under 5 – so I’m quite glad I didn’t read that until after I knew he was okay! I went over to see him after school last night, and he was quite back to his old self, eager to share all the details of his hospital stay (especially the disgusting bodily function bits, ugh! LOL).

Deanie, I do have the smileys turned off (I think it was under the User Display Preferences section.), which seemed to help things, at least for a little while. (Although all the smileys then turn up as their codes, like :smileyname:, so on posts with a lot of smileys, it gives me a headache trying to read through and decipher the actual text from the codes to be ignored.) Anyway, not displaying the smileys seemed to work for a little while, and then it slowed down again. Also, although they don’t appear on the posts pages, the smiley selection screen is still there under the “Post Reply” and “Preview” screens, which is why I’ve stopped doing any formatting and have just been using the “Quick Post” box at the bottom of the screen, as LH suggested.

MM, did you see Jo’s readings at the White House from Monday? I’m not sure if they have video up yet, but Leaky’s main page did have a post summerizing the two Q&As. As usual, the media have been misquoting her like crazy, and taking it out of context; I’m guessing that’s what prompted your news story. Jo actually said that she’d be bringing us a new book in the not so distant future, but it wouldn’t be HP. However, she did also say that she wouldn’t rule out revisiting the HP world at some point. So, the good news is that we should have something from her coming up…not sure if her idea of “not so distant” is the same as mine, LOL, but I’ll take it! ;)

Good Morning,

I have the stove/oven repair guy here, replacing the parts on my poor range.

I have a bunch of things I need to do but I don’t know if I can. The last two weeks or so has been consumed by last minute adjustments of my schedule to fit all sorts or needs of other people. My “empty” week next week is already filling up with tasks. So, after this guy leaves today I may just hide. I already know tomorrow is scheduled up. Monday is scheduled. Tuesday is scheduled. Wednesday is scheduled. Then, on Thursday or Friday I already know I need to take the car for an oil change.

Even if we both retire at the same time, I am afraid that the piddley things will just consume my days. ;)

Not feeling well. Not exactly sick, just not well, so I may boogie out of here soon. ;)

Hello Leaky.

Deanie, are you feeling any better? Whatever it is, I hope it doesn’t last long. On the subject of work benefits, if I work a Sunday, I get time and a half. If I’d joined the company just four months before, I’d get double time! :(

Lady Hawke, was your oven repair successful?? And how is your daughter?

Jen, lololol about the tmi on bodily functions! I can just imagine…..! I’m so very pleased that all is well. xx

Aloha! ;)

I am soooo glad it’s Friday! ;)

Monday was just plain wierd. Tuesday the DS had a flat tire on the way home from work. Wednesday the DS was off work (regular day off) and the roofers came, he had a dental appointment and he had to get a pair of new tires. Thursday the dumpster used by the roofers was still blocking the driveway and half of our Bradford Pear came down in the wind. Today I have to call a tree removal firm and the lawn care people are coming to mow. They will just have to mow around the fallen branches.

Oh yes, today my coworker is leaving two hours early, my supervisor is out of town until wednesday and my boss is in a meeting of undetermined duration. And the office copier/printer is broken.

It will be a joyous day! ;)

Thank you, Asti. The aggravation is actually the worst of it, but the expense is adding up fast. ;)

I hope the dumpster is gone when I get home today. I want to park in my garage and close the door. ;)

I did take a few pictures of the tree. I still need to sort them out, but I will try to post a couple over at CC on Ya. ;)

Deanie, I can (and do,) sympathise, both with the aggravation and the expense. I’m still hurting from the money I’ve paid out for repairs/broken things, and I’ve only fixed half the list. I don’t quite know what we’re going to do. Maybe overtime on Sundays for a while!!
