Hi everyone!

I leave for my trip on Saturday, so this will be a busy week of getting organized, in addition to doing my shifts at the bakery and hopefully making it into school for a few hours.

I really enjoyed reading the Rita Skeeter articles. (Did everyone see the second one, posted on Fri?) Even though there wasn’t much new info (at least not if you’d read/seen interviews with Jo post-DH), it was great to be back in the world, and to read the HP-style writing. So fun!

Asti, regarding your DS’s possible depression – I definitely agree with everyone recommending you or he speak to a doctor. When I started dealing with panic attacks/anxiety and depression when I started college, a lot of people were telling me it was normal – that I was just homesick and adjusting to a new situation and needed to simply push through it. Luckily, because my mom also had a history of anxiety and depression, she recognized it and got me to a doctor right away. I’m quite sure there’s no way I could have “pushed through it” myself; the anxiety would have gotten stronger, and I would have fallen deeper into the depression. As it was, when I first started therapy, I had a very hard time really hearing what the doctor was saying because it just didn’t seem possible that I could feel “normal” again. So, I began taking medication to get myself back on a more even keel which then made it possible for me to be mentally receptive to the behavioral therapy side of my treatment. I know not everyone believes in medication, and that’s a totally personal choice, but for me it was definitely necessary. I’ve been off the medication for many years now, and although I’ve had some minor bouts of depression and, more often, anxiety, since so far I’ve been able to work through them on my own, using the techniques I learned in therapy. I’ll definitely be keeping you and your family in my thoughts and sending lots of virtual {{{{HUGS}}}}!

LEW, I’m so glad you loved The Lizzie Bennet Diaries! (I always get slightly nervous when recommending something I love so much, though I’m not sure why!) Did you follow the full story from the “complete experience” page on the Lizzie Bennet site, with the Twitter and Tumblr posts? I didn’t know about it my first time through, so I only watched Lizzie’s videos, but when I discovered it, I did my first rewatch, and all the little extras definitely enhanced the experience. If you’re still going through withdrawals, that might help. ;) Also, I really loved The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet book that just came out. It’s follows the exact timeline of the videos and a lot of what’s described in the book is from the videos, but in most cases it’s fleshed out more, with details Lizzie never mentions on screen. I bought both the print and the audiobook, and it was so much fun hearing Ashley Clements narrate. Some of the voices are ones she did often in the videos – like Mrs. Bennet and Darcy – so they’re really familiar, and then it’s fun to hear her take on the others. Her Jane (which she did do a few times in costume theatre scenes) is so spot-on it’s uncanny!

Now I’ve been watching Emma Approved, which is scheduled to finish at the end of August. I don’t love it nearly as much as LBD, which is probably in large part because I’m not as much of a fan of Emma, the book, but I do love the Knightley in this version, and Emma has grown on me as well.

LH, ooh, I’ve been away for too long; I didn’t realize you were substituting and going for a teacher’s license. Good luck!

Miss Hagrid, I love your idea of finding books in thrift shops and selling them online – it seems like a great way to make some extra money. I hope you’ll be able to refocus on your writing soon!

I’m enjoying reading the wedding-planning posts from both LEW and MM – keep them coming! :)

BWJen, I checked out Emma Approved for a sec, but couldn’t quite figure out how it worked. The website wasn’t laid out in a logical manner to me. I couldn’t find the earliest archived material (so I could start at the beginning of the series).

I DID do the complete experience of LBD from the beginning, and I’m glad I did. I enjoyed the Twitter conversations. And even the Looks By Jane added some personality to the character. I’m still in awe over how well done that series was.

LEW, I used the Pemberley Digital site to catch up on Emma Approved – http://www.pemberleydigital.com/ If you go to Emma Approved along the top, and then click Story in the drop-down box, it’ll bring you to a page set up like the LBD one, with all the videos, Twitter conversations, blog posts, etc. That site also has Welcome to Sanditon with Gigi Darcy. I wasn’t a huge fan of the story in that one, but I do like Gigi, so it was still fun to watch.

Also, if you are interested in the Secret Diary audiobook, this site is running a contest to win a free copy: http://linkis.com/5minutesformom.com/vtBya I was interested to see that this reviewer loved it even though she wasn’t familiar with the LBD videos.

I too will be hitting the road this weekend. I will be up in Toronto to catch the Indy Car race in the city streets. I will be staying at a friends home in Etobicoke, so I save a bundle on hotel costs. He is the son of a guy I used to work with @ the factory in Guelph. They were sub contractors for my company and I’m sure you all remember all the times I used to fly up there in the Riley for several years. The son married a gal from Orangeville a couple of years ago & they settled down in Toronto. Some of you may recall that all of my old time Canadian Leaky friends were from Orangeville… So the ’it’s a small world’ axiom applies here! lool…

I’m good and I hope everyone’s doing okay. 102 F (40C) right now in SLC!! Hope you’re keeping cool, ironsos!!

Today is the big day, the launch of The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness. I was very frustrated yesterday because a bracelet for charms which I was expecting did not arrive, so I have a decent number of silver charms hanging around waiting to be turned into a memento of the above trilogy. When the book arrives I will not tear through it, desperate to see how it ends, I will savour each moment because this is a writer who is interested in the small details and she has enriched my life.

Graymayne I finished the book I was reading this morning and went to the carosel. There was THE Book OF Life waiting for me to read. Of course I have to reread the other two books before I start on the new one. It is nice it will be waiting for me. I decided to wait until it arrived before I started my reread. This way I will not have forgotten most of it when I start the new book.

Josie How nice to see you dropping by. I have missed you.

Lady Hawke When are you suppose to be back from Gatlinburg?

Since it is cooler than normal I need to get outside and do the yard work. I decided to wait until today to do it. I forgot to pay my bills too so I will have to do that while I am cooling down from the outside work. I need to go to the grocery store too. That will have to wait until after I pay the bills.

Won I hope you had a great time over the weekend.

I just finished my Diana Gabaldon book. I quite enjoyed it, more than the previous one, and it ended in a satisfying fashion instead of having had everyone just “jump off a cliff”. My Book of Life has not yet arrived. I don’t really want to start anything before it does. I know whatever I am reading will be dumped immediately in favor of the new arrival. I have no interest in tearing through it at a rapid rate. I know when it is finished there will be no more where they came from.

COOLG, we are leaving for Gatlinburg this Sunday morning and will return the following Saturday. We have changed hotels this trip, moved two block down on the same street, still with a balcony over the same river. Our regular place has showed up on a bedbug registry. I know they can be anywhere but the thought of them makes my skin crawl. So, I took Google Maps and I “drove” down the street until I found another similar place, saw the name on the sign, and looked it up. It has a reputation as being “spotless”, no bedbug registry. I’ll still walk into the room and tear the beds apart inspecting them before we take the room, but I feel more confident.

WON, have a safe trip and have a great time.

Lady Hawke You sound like me. I always check first thing to see if any traces of bed bugs when I stay in a hotel. Where do you find the bedbug registry? I will check out where we are staying in October.

I finished mowing my yard, outside the fense, my side yard, and my neighbors outside the fense. I try to keep it mowed because that is where I park when it snows. I don’t remember when my daughter sold the place next door. All I know is they have not made any improvements on the outside. Only thing I have seen them do is take out things that can be sold. The place was sold AS IS so it still had so much inside. I could not get anything out since it was sold suddendly. I just pretend that I lost it all in a fire. See what happens when you sign things over to your children? The only good thing is I no longer have to pay the association dues and taxes on the place. I also do not have to worry about my kids having to get rid of everything when I die. They will only have where I live now to worry about. So it is a relief that it no longer belongs to me.

The place we used to stay had multiple reports from the summer when I discovered them. I always check for them and my DS did go to Orlando during the same time so they could have come from either place. There have been no more reports since two years ago but I did not feel like chancing it.

COOLG, I think I would have asked the new owners if they found any personal items, photos, etc. if they would mink handing them across the fence.

My The Book of Life has arrived. I have to run to the grocery but as soon as I get home I can start reading.

I have done my studying for the day. I used to be able to study for hours, even all day long. Now, I find I go into overload. So, I am reviewing the things I find particularly frightening every day and hope some of it will stick permanently.

It has been 28 years since I had to take any sort of nation/standardized test. I used to be pretty good at them and they didn’t make me to anxious but I am learning I have forgotten many things, mostly things I learned many years ago, just long enough to take a test.

I also was a bit apprehensive about going back to the same room where we always stayed with my father. We stayed in the exact same room almost every time we went. I wanted the same basic set up, two queen size beds with a balcony over the river, but if my mother spent any time in the room alone I did not really want it to be THE room. I was afraid she would notice my father’s absence from it too much.

The old room had the bed running parallel to the river with the sliding glass doors and glass wall to the left of the beds. This room is situated so the glass wall is at the foot of the beds. It appears there will also be an upholstered arm chair as well as a table and chairs. We always thought the other room was quite large but this one may be larger. There is also a large dressing area with a sink and then another sink in the actual bathroom with the toilet and tub. So, getting dressed and ready should be easy.

MM, I meant to tell you, I’m one of those crazy people who would have considered a black wedding gown. I feel a lot better in black and a lot more sophisticated and mysterious in it than forms of white. It is my first choice for a “party” dress. I knew that would make other people crazy though so I didn’t do it. I even thought about black bridesmaids dresses but my ladies didn’t go for it. Actually, I don’t know why it ended up being their business what color I picked since no one ever consulted me about what color I wanted to wear down the aisle as a bridesmaid.

I think Kellye Cash, the Miss America from Memphis and Johnny Cash’s great niece, had black bridesmaids dresses. She competed in “Cash Black”. I was almost surprised when she didn’t wear it herself at her wedding.

I have been reading steadily most of the day since my copy arrived. I also received some more charms for my proposed bracelet but, disappointingly, my bracelet has not yet arrived, which I find odd. The package has a tracking number but this service is limited to reporting when the item has been safely received by the buyer. I had hoped to be wearing the bracelet and charms while I read the book.

CoolG I don’t blame you deciding to read the books one after the other because the number of characters is pretty huge. The third book glides seamlessly into the story and is totally absorbing.

This is my mother’s day out. So, I will do very little reading today. I didn’t want to race through it anyway. Sigh…

My mother doesn’t need any real groceries this week as we will be leaving on Sunday and she doesn’t want to purchase things and just leave them sitting. Today we are shopping for the trip so we will not have to spend exorbitant tourist dollars on our needs while there. We do know where the local grocery is and we are in less than five minutes walking distance of a Walgreens. Walgreens is a pharmacy which is also a small department store, everything from basic grocery items, socks and underwear, school supplies, household cleaning needs, electronics, cosmetics, etc. So, if we forget anything we have a convenient means of replacing what we’ve left behind.

Cold and rainy. This is very much different for mid-July in Kansas. I was checking out a field sight this morning and cannot get warmed back up!

LH, my brother and sister in law got married in February, and I had a black bridesmaid dress. It was a strapless ball gown (yes, poofy skirt). There were a few white accents, but mostly black; with black opera length gloves, black and white shawl, black fake fur muffs and stole. Very formal, but very black. (and beautiful). I know lots of people who did winter weddings in black; also keeps costs down for bridesmaids if you let them wear any dress, since most women own at least one black dress.

I’m turning into a little ball of excitement and stress (mostly work related stress, not too much wedding related). Weeeee!

Okay, so I’ve now been given a hard time on Facebook for reading our Deborah Harkness books.

Quote, “Anything to do with witchcraft or witches is not good”

This was preceded by a question as to whether I had read The Book of Shadows which is a real book on witchcraft and not fiction.

I told this person I had not read The Book of Shadows and these books were fiction. That is when I was told anything to do with witches was not good.

I said, “Then don’t read them. Everyone got all upset over Harry Potter and those are a Biblical allergory.”

She asked if I was going to let my daughter read them. I didn’t even answer. My daughter has read them as they came out, right behind me.

It makes me so tired…

GRAYMAYNE, I have known this person almost thirty years. I reposted the “Cast of Characters” from the previous books that Deborah Harkness provided a couple of days ago. I wanted easy access to it if necessary. All my friends can see my page. So, this one friend decided she had to challenge my ethics and morality in reading a book with witches in it. In my eagerness about the book I stupidly forgot that I still have the same friends and relatives who got themselves all worked up over Harry Potter and its “Satanic” intent.

FINALLY! My bracelet turned up! The Royal Mail site revealed yesterday that the package had turned up day at some RM place, so at the very least, I can state that my suppliers’ “dispatched” classification does not mean that your goods have actually been posted:-( To add insult to perceived injury they did not send me the fastener style I had ordered despite the original description appearing on the delivery note. The joke is on them, however, because the value of this style is £4 greater than the one I ordered, lol. I am not impressed. Anyway the charms are on and I am wearing it so I will at least finish off the last few chapters properly adorned. My firedrake I have already been wearing as a pendant. I read somewhere yesterday that an alternative term for “firedrake” is “wyvern”. I just don’t remember my source.

There is no arguing or discussing with these people. They don’t believe you when you tell them these books are not used as recruiting tools to turn someone into a follower of Wicca/Satan. They don’t believe they aren’t “how to” books. They don’t seem to understand the difference between books about “born” witches like Bewitched on television back in the 1960s and people who follow a religion that they hold as hostile. AND you can’t tell them that being Wicca is not the Satanic worship they mistakenly believe it is either. I tried to tell her Matthew was Catholic and then I realized that probably didn’t win any points either since she probably thinks Catholics are Satan worshipers because the “pray to statues” in church. Anything out of line with their fundamentalist approved version of Christianity is probably seen as Satanic.

Of course, they can’t look at the books themselves because they would run the risk of being polluted by the contents if it turned out to be what they think. So, there is nowhere to go with the conversation. They persist in their fear that what you are reading are really the Devil’s fingers winding their way into your brain and nothing you say will change their minds because they believe the Devil already has you, that you are already lost. They are crippled by not being able to make and educated decision. They are terrified of being exposed to any information outside of that which is sanctioned by their church. So, they live in ignorance, afraid that if they were exposed to anything new they would no longer believe what they have always believed. So, they sit in judgment over everyone else without having the facts.

I did look at her daughter’s Facebook page. Her daughter has been reading a lot of Twilight, Mortal Instruments, etc., pretty much the standard YA stuff. Her daughter moved in with her boyfriend which the mother does not find acceptable, to the point that the daughter broke communication off with her mother and did not invite her to the wedding when they finally married. The daughter is the only person I have ever unfriended on Facebook. I did it after she didn’t invite her mother to the wedding but I had become disenchanted with her anyway. Most of her posts were ugly, using foul language. Her posts made my stomach twist when I would see them come up on my news page. I knew I had no time for her. She had gone down some paths I found very distasteful.

The daughter has no security on her page. Even though we aren’t friends I can still access her page and that is how I was able to see her list of movies and books. It is apparent her mother holds her reading material and movie preferences responsible for her behavior.

The child was adopted at the age of four from a VERY difficult family situation. She had been abused and seen things no child should ever see. Her whole biological family are what we would refer to as “trash” down south. She was adopted too late and the influence of her adopted home had little effect. As far as I can see she has merely reverted to form. Most people who read our books don’t behave the way this girl has.

She did finally tell me she should not have said anything to me, that what I had posted was “too close to home”. That is when I went and looked at her daughter’s page.

She was right. She shouldn’t have said anything. She doesn’t know what she is talking about and is too ignorant to change that.
