Lady Hawke Talking of sleep, I just woke up at 9.50am! I think I might have made up for my bad night yesterday. I will also be cleaning today but I don’t have your genuine excuses for the chaos:(

MM Yesterday was the first time I had even heard of churros despite our custom of seeking out good restaurants in which to celebrate our special days, so full marks to our friend, the chef. It is just a pity that my last blood test showed a bad trend in my cholesterol level:( I am glad to hear that you are taking things at a sensible pace after your latest health scare.

See you when I see you, our son arrives tomorrow.

I woke about 1:30 AM and had little luck in going back to sleep. I forced myself to stay in bed until 6:45 AM but now I am up. I will try to do a few things before we head to church. We have to go to the “big, late service” today instead of the shorter early service we normally attend. We have volunteered to sing in the Christmas Choir and we are having a rehearsal after the late service. I don’t think it is going to be so much a real choir as much as a group of people willing to stand up in front and encourage the rest of the congregation to sing.

Our church is small and does not have a choir. When we first started attending this church it did have something it called a choir but was never more than six to eight people who could not have been said to have been capable of carrying a tune. It was really quite painful to witness. Our current priest dispensed with the so called choir after his arrival. He is something of a musician in his own right. So, at the early service, not only does he perform service as the priest, he is also the musical accompaniment. He straps on a guitar and sings the responses and/or hymns. At the late service we have a pianist and a person playing a viola. No one plays the organ anymore.

After returning from church I need to deliver my mother to my father and come home to clean. My mother is staying home this morning and making the Christmas coconut cake.

I’m on a rest break:)

BigG Will be in Ramsbottom, Lancashire today to attend a friend’s birthday event which includes roast sucking pig. I checked out the place on the web and couldn’t resist copying this closing paragraph under Culture and Community.

“The Black Pudding Throwing World Championships are held annually at the Royal Oak (now the Oaks) pub on Bridge Street. Participants have to toss black puddings in an attempt to dislodge a stack of Yorkshire puddings on plinths on two levels (one for children, the other for adults). The winner is the one who dislodges most Yorkshire puddings in three attempts.30

Three cheers for old customs and English eccentricity!!

Good evening!

I am on quite a high……..the cookie tree worked! JUST! We started by using chocolate spread to stick the cookies onto the trunk slices, but it was all very precarious. I ran to the shop to buy a bar of chocolate, which we melted, and rebuilt the tree using that instead. It set much more firmly. Daughter did a great job decorating it. There is a picture on CC and fb. She is over the moon with it. I think this might be a new Christmas tradition. Though next time, I will definitely make the trunk thinner and wider!

Graymayne, hip, hip, hurray!

I’ve managed to clean the kitchen and the huge, bathroom. I know those of you in the UK cannot imagine how out of control bathrooms have become in newer homes in the US. There is a jacuzzi tub, a free standing shower, two vanities with sinks, the toilet alcove and entrances into the two walk in closets. You could fit a twin bed into the open floor space and still have room to move around.

That is not a lot of cleaning for one day but we went to church and stayed for a rather long choir rehearsal and then I had to pick my mother up and take her to my father, make what I hope is the last visit to the grocery for both of us, and go pick her up and take her home after the cleaning in the afternoon.

Tomorrow I will do vacuuming and dusting. My DS is working on clearing the dining room of all the stuff from the computer room that moved into the dining room when he was in the process of clearing the computer room to add the daybed and the lady’s desk that came from my cousin’s house. Once he get the room cleared I need to work on the floor. It has had some hard use since he has been using the room as his auxillary office.

I won’t have a full day of cleaning tomorrow. I will have to take my mother to my father and then I will have to pick her up around 2:30 to go back to her apartment to wait for the delivery of the dryer between 3 PM and 6 PM.

Once again, I hope to sleep tonight. I am here while I have dinner in the oven.

I have defrosted the ham today. We are doing another cold Christmas lunch to be laid out like a picnic. We’ll have ham, potato salad, slaw, a cold asparagus in viniagrette, olives, pickles, etc.

Christmas Eve my mother is making a chicken tortilla casserole. I’m making BBQ beef ribs for those who won’t or can’t eat the casserole. We’ll have slaw with that as well. I hope my MIL will bring guacamole. It is a great favorite of hers and will go with the chicken tortilla casserole.

Christmas morning we will have my sausage swirls and scrambled eggs, a very simple breakfast.

My BIL and SIL sent a gift pack with summer sausages, cheeses, mustards and assorted goodies which can be laid out to supplement our food intake.

My mother did make her Christmas coconut cake today but that is the only baking which has been done. This is the first year in any of our memories in which she did not make a variety of cookies and candies. She also did not make her party mix or her egg custard. I’m afraid this is going to be a very miserly, bare bones Christmas. We simply have not had the time or will this year.

Merry Christmas, HUFFLEBUG.

Lady Hawke try melatonin for sleep. You take it about 20 minutes before bedtime. It is non-prescription. Most OTC sleep aids are actually some type of antihistamine, this is not. It does not put you to sleep, but it does help shut down the thoughts that seem to run around chasing each other around your brain when stressed or worried. Kroger carries it as does GNC and most grocery or drug stores. it is in the vitamin and supplement section. ;)

Sorry I missed the solstice. I hope it went well for those who celebrate it. ;)

Work is slow, so I bought 5 new books for my Kindle last night. 3 finish a series I am reading and one is a companion for the same series. The last one is book 2 of a series still being written. I hope book 3 is not too long in coming out. ;)

I am starting to plan and budget for another trip to Kissimee in September. We still have unused days at Disney for which we have paid. I will be retired this time so there will be no need to rush back to work with no rest. ;)

Bbl. ;)

High winds and heavy rain from a storm system which crossed the Atlantic. I’m glad that I’m indoors but I’m slaving over a neglected flat but I have to keep stopping to rest. There are bits that I am proud of but there are larger areas of which I am less proud. I really should go for the minimalist look for simpler maintenance but it is not going to happen. No word from BigG so far. My DS has been heroically doing the shopping and the fridge is full to bursting.

Work today has been busy, but not in volume of calls, in longevity. We all seem to be explaining the same thing several times to each caller. They all seem very thick today. In theory we deal with adults, in practice 8 year olds would probably demonstrate better understanding of the instructions.

The major licensing we handle changed to 2 year renewals instead of annual with birth month expiration. So today most of our calls are people trying to file renewals 6 to 18 months early. Renewals will only open 45 days prior to each end of month expiration date. ;)

There goes the phone – again. ;)

Good evening!

Work today was very, very, very, very NOT FUN. One more day to go, then I have 5 days off! And tomorrow shouldn’t be as bad as today. But today was bad……..

Our turkey is in the fridge. We have called him Edward.

My DS and children blitzed the house today. Well, to be strictly accurate, the downstairs of the house. Chaos still reigns upstairs, but the kitchen hasn’t been so clean since last Christmas, and I think…..gasp……son might even have moved furniture to hoover behind and underneath! Ds even cleaned the oven!!!!!!!!

Graymayne, thank you! Is *BigG * safely with you by now?

Lady Hawke, hugs for you and yours. xx

DEANIE, I take 10mg of Melatonin every night but I’m eating through it.

I took my mother to my father this morning and went into the business office to dispute some charges. One of the things I had been pondering while not sleeping was what seemed to be a discrepancy in the billing for my father’s stay. I needed to see my mother’s check book and reconcile it with what they were telling us we owed next. As it turns out we had already been over charged by $1300.00 and they were about to overcharge us with another $2300.00 if we had stayed until the end of the month. I worked it out that when we check him out tomorrow they will owe us a refund of $2118 to take care of the overcharge and refund for time not used. I had to go in with the dates of payment, payment amounts and check numbers all written out and make the billing office understand they had charged us as if December had 40 days and not 31. The billing clerk was reluctant to think she had made such a mistake and reluctant to admit she was about to charge us another $208 a day for another twelve days for which we had already paid $148 a day. I finally made her see it and she admitted the mistake but said it came from the corporate office. No, it came from her. She is the one who figures out what you owe and tells you to pay up.

Then, I went to purchase bed rails for my father’s bed. He has the sensation he is going to roll off the bed at home.

Since then I have been vacuuming and dusting. I have coughed and sneezed through piles of the DE dust we sprinkled for months after the bedbug incident. I have been moving furniture to find piles of it.

My house is as ready as it is going to get except for the dining room that my DS is still clearing.

Now, I need to prep dinner and go pick mother up to go to the apartment and wait for the delivery of the dryer.

I have to go to the grocery for bread and egg custard. My daughter was very disappointed to learn her grandmother had made egg custard.

My tamales are done. My daughter, son, MIL, DIL, DS and grandson worked until we finished them all. We are set for tonight’s feast. :) it was so mush fun getting the work done together. (My grandson was the star attraction. He was passed along from arms to arms. He is almost 8 months old and he is super cute.) We will just add Christmas cookies and fruit for dessert for our dinner. :)

I will probably travel to Texas with the DS and my MIL. She is looking forward to seeing the grandkids. We will leave on the 26 and come back on Wednesday.

While trying to find my place I saw Graymayne had asked me about the movie Catching Fire. I thought it was great. I did not read the book again before I saw it so did not remember a lot of it. Jennifer had not read the book and she thought it was great too. She did not like the ending but I told her she would when they come out with the next movie.

I was wondering how I managed to answer when I first came here and remembered I used Word to answer as I read each post. Maybe I should start doing that again but it takes up so much time.

Ironsos Glad that Josephine came bearing gifts. She brings the kind of gifts I like to recieve especially if they are a good cook. I think I am going to try to make lemon bars today. Something a little tart and a little sweet.

I have a pot roast on cooking. Since we are having ham at our Christmas get together, I thought I would make a pot roast to have here at home. I still have over half of the ham I cooked at Thanksgiving. I put it in the freezer. I did cut it in slices so I could have ham sandwiches without defrosing the whole thing.

I woke up to snow so having a white day before Christmas. This is the kind I like because the roads will be clear but probably have slick spots again. I hope it melts off my truck today. I was planning on driving to my daughters tomorrow morning. I go to watch my grandkids open their presents. It makes it feel like Christmas to me.

I need to go wash my hair. Now that it is cold weather, I seem to wait until afternoon to take my shower if it is hair washing day. It is cold enough I have to turn on a space heater to make the bathroom warm enough. Actually yesterday was hair washing day but I wanted to wait until today because I will be leaving too early to wash it in the morning. It is the drying and using the hair styler that makes me so tired and takes the longest to do.

Good evening!

I survived work, woohoo for me! Five days off!

I’ve just said goodnight to daughter, very very excited.
She knows what her gift is, unfortunately. We’ve got her a bike, and something like that HAD to be one she liked, and one that was suitable for her. Her and her Dad collected it yesterday. It’s just as well we didn’t leave it until today…….the road is closed due to floods, and the bike place is cut off. There might be a lot of frantic parents tonight.
I am not even going to attempt to wrap it. It’ll be covered in a blanket!

She has finally come out, and said she knows Father Christmas is just us. She’s known for the last few years, but has hedged her bets, just in case, and only just been brave enough to admit it, lol!

Because I was working, DS came over all domesticated and organised the cooking of cookies for Father Christmas, and the preparing of Edward for the oven. He even made omelettes all round for tea. All I had to do when I got home from work was fall in the bath.

The Advent Candle is just flickering out.

Happy Christmas everyone. My love to you all. xx

I had a great Christmas. The kids were here along with my MIL and my nephew and niece. It was my grandson’s first Christmas. He had so many gifts from everyone. He was spoiled at 8 months. It was so funny to see him having fun with the ribbons and bows and ignoring all the toys. LOL!!

I am off to have Christmas breakfast with my daughter. Later we are visiting my BIL in the hospital. He had surgery on his knee and he is getting surgery on his hip later in January. He has had about 30 surgeries since his motorcycle accident 6 years ago. That he walks is a miracle in itself. So busy, busy.

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas full of love, family and friends.
