I found my grandfather’s and great uncle’s service ribbons and medals from WWI. There are little bars across a sort of rainbow print ribbon with the names of war campaigns on the like Somme Offensive, Argonne, etc. I also found the Gold Star Mothers medals, both on a ribbon with a bar pin with her name on it and a neck ribbon with a meda.

Then, my DS brought in a big box from the garage. Inside were photographs in frames meant to stand on table tops. There was also a large “photo album” but instead of photos it held at least 100 post cards. the pages had slits the correct size to hold the corners of post cards. I need to look back on the oldest post cards but about midway through the book I noted the date on the postcards was 1907. The pages were crumbling so I removed each post cards and put them in a stack. There were Christmas, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, etc. postcards, year after year of them. I have seen old post cards for sale in antique shops. So, I know some people must collect them.

We also found my father’s high school graduation diploma in the same box.

I also found a bundle of sheet music for the piano from the same period. I did not open it completely because the mustiness of the book of post cards was making my DS’s allergies act up. I’ll have to look at the sheet music when he isn’t there. I’m sure it will be a mixture of classical music and popular songs of the day I have never heard of.

I finished packing the curio cabinet and I packed the decorative vases.

Hi everyone! My power did end up coming on around noon, but cable and Internet were out for a while longer than that, and for some reason the 3G on my phone stopped working, so I couldn’t get online to post. I was pretty lucky; there are still a lot of people without power. My sister is one of them…she and my BIL took the kids to a hotel for the night because it’s supposed to be down in the single digits.

We ended up getting about 26 inches here, according to the local paper. I spent three hours shoveling and it looks like I barely made a dent. I’m on the corner of a major intersection, and the roads I can see from here are a mess. I can only imagine what some of the side streets look like. The city has already cancelled school for Monday, but so far it’s the only one in the area to do so. I’m now at the point where I’m torn between sort of hoping my school will cancel so I don’t have to even think of leaving the house for the next two days but also not wanting them to cancel since it’ll mean having to lose another day of my LeakyCon trip.

I’m exhausted after the workout I got shoveling, so I’m heading to bed now. I’m sure I’ll be popping in again sometime tomorrow.

I was getting Malware before, but no longer.

And thanks for the congrats. I’m rather surprised how NOT freaked out I am about this. He doesn’t have too much stuff, and most of it is going into storage. I’ll have to condense a little, but it’s mostly rearranging. However, sadly, this is really just temporary. He’s going to be leaving Kansas in a few months, so it’s not all roses…

Good luck with everything, Jen. Stay safe and warm!

Miss Hagrid Hi there! Nice to see you.

Dr. Lew Mmm! “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may”.

BWJen I’m relieved to see that you weren’t greatly inconvenienced by the loss of electrity. The snowfall pictures that I have seen on news bulletins looked impressive.

Lady Hawke Collections of postcard sometimes turn up on the Antiques Roadshow. No doubt you can research the subject on the internet when you finally get some free time. Fascinating family history you are turning up!

We have rain today, nothing spectacular but it will no doubt cause some flooding somewhere because of the already sodden soil in the fields.

GRAYMAYNE and DR LEW, I was struggling but that is definitely a “glass half full” attitude and probably a lot more productive.

It is stormy here today. My friend who went to LeakyCon with me is in town. Her DS is participating in a regional theatre audition process so she and I have today and tomorrow to see a bit of each other. I need to go clean up so when she calls I can give her a reasonable estimated time of arrival. I’m leaving my DS with lunch and dinner prepared so I know he is fed. He had told me earlier this week he needed today to study so it has worked out well.

Good evening!

It’s been a quiet day here. Son and DS were supposed to play golf, but the course was closed due to flooding. So they played darts instead!
Daughter finished her story for the radio competition. I have posted it elsewhere if you are interested in reading it.

LEW, will you carry on a long distance relationship? Whatever plans you both have, I do hope it all works out for you. And in the meantime, enjoy. xx

Lady Hawke, do you have a local history museum nearby? Or an historical society? it seems to me that a lot of the stuff you are unearthing would be fascinating to a lot of people in a social history context.

Just got the call that school is cancelled again tomorrow. So this now pushes our last day to Weds, June 26. I’m going to have to plan to try for a flight late that night because if I wait for Thurs, I risk being late for the LeakyCon opening ceremonies if there are any flight delays. :(

I am off to spend the day with my friend again, this time alone without my daughter who is at school. I have no idea what we will do beyond chat without reservation and without lowering our voices.

I have to do some cleaning tomorrow and then it will be back to the regular Wednesday parent errands and more packing on Thursday.

MM, my DS is having a colonoscopy on Friday so his prep day is Thursday.

Good evening!

I am really really tired. I slept appallingly badly last night, I don’t know why. It is 8.45pm, and I have only just sat down…..I had my piano lesson, and daughter had a school disco.

Son brought home a letter about his summer exams…….. He sits 34 papers over a period of about 5 weeks. Poor lad.

Lady Hawke, I hope you and your friend are having fun!

Jen, that is a real shame about having to make up the snow days. That doesn’t happen here, it’s just a bonus day off school. I do hope the weather doesn’t cut into any more Leaky Con time.

I might just have an early night for a change.

ASTI, I didn’t sleep at all well the night before last either. Then, I got upan hour early to make my DS scrambled eggs since he can’t have the oatmeal he normally eats in the morning and which he prepares for himself. He can’t have oatmeal because of the colonoscopy he is having on Friday. Many times I make up for lost sleep during the wee hours of the night by a short but necessary sleep after my DS gets up and goes into the bathroom to prepare for the day.

I had a very nice day with my friend yesterday. We explored town, drove by places she was interested in seeing how things have changed since she left town. I even took her some places she had never been during her nine years living here. My family is buried in the oldest, most historical cemetery in town. It is in a very unsavory area and the approach to the gates is absolutely terrifying, empty lots full of trash, derelict factory/warehouse building, bars on windows, broken glass. There is no reason to believe there could be anything at the end of the avenue of horror worth driving through that mess to reach. My friend had never been in that area of town because it is so incredibly frightening. I, of course, have been there many times since we visit the cemetery. My father also grew up in a house about two residential blocks from the gates. My father sold the house when I was a child instead of continuing to rent it out. The mortgage payments for the house went into my bank account during college for my spending money.

My friend was asking me if we intended to use the lots in that cemetery since it was in such an awful area. I asked if she had never been there and since she said she hadn’t I drove her in. She was astounded at the beauty of the cemetery once you crossed the old, arched stone bridge over the railroad tracks onto the property. There is a building on the National Historic record which is used as the gatehouse and office.

We also discovered there appears to be a reclamation effort around the cemetery, although the approach is worse than ever. Some of the really frightening neighborhoods have been torn out and new townhouse neighborhoods have been built, apparently catering to the students from the medical school a few blocks away.

Today I have to do some cleaning. I am not going to my mother and father’s today. I will be back at it tomorrow.

ASTI, when you say your son is sitting 34 papers I presume you mean 34 tests. Will they all be written long answer or will there be some multiple choice response testing? Either way, it seems a really onerous way of spending one’s summer.

Her favorite special occasion restaurant has moved from its original location out to a residential island in the Mississippi River. They were open for lunch so we decided to treat ourselves. It is a sort of French/Southern fusion style restaurant, very linen tablecloth, good cutlery and hushed conversation, a “ladies who lunch” can of place. In the room where we were seated there was one man having lunch with his wife before going to an afternoon movie. The rest of the tables in our seating area were inhabited by middle aged or older ladies. There was a table of eight, six of them at least 80 years old or more. I heard them comparing the years they graduated from high school, at least two of them graduated in the late 1930s, placing them in their 90s.

There were men in another room, obviously on business lunches, but they seem to have placed the casual, social lunch diners in the same room.

We drove down into Mississippi and went to look for the bed and breakfast inn and restaurant I made reference to a few weeks ago. I had never been on the property and wasn’t sure exactly where to find it. Since I had my old exploring, wandering around buddy with me we just explored.

Oops! I missed it! Happy Year of the Snake!! ;)

Aloha, y’all! ;)

Just working & tired here. I don’t think I’m anemic, i just have not been leeping well. My mind won’t turn off. ;)

Family reunion is this weekend. This is an experiment, we moved it from June to February. I don’t think it will work. the high temps in north Florida are supposed to be around 60 F (15.5 C) all weekend. I think we need it a bit warmer, maybe April would be better. Either way, anyone with children in school might have to miss it. Most of us get to the hotel on the Friday, early afternoon, and leave mid-to-late morning on Sunday. So anyone with any distance to go may not get home early enough to get the children to school on Monday and they would miss Friday, too. ;)

This is President’s Day or Washington’s Birthday weekend, but I don’t know if the schools close for this Federal holiday. I do know that my office will not be closed. So I am taking Thursday, Friday and Monday off. ;)

WOW! First time, in a very long time, that Leaky has let me log in! Woohoo!!
And, I’m also no longer getting the Malware warnings!! Woohoo!!!

I’ve missed being here regularly, like the old times. I’ve really neglected the Leaky Poll Castle… I usually try to stay in touch through our FB group, but I know not all of you are there. Anyways, I’m gonna come back later to catch up and chat a bit. Now I can’t stay long cause I’m at work :(

First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Won! Hope you have a great one! :D

Secondly, (I also posted this on the FB group) Amazon Local Deals is running a special on the James Bond books by Ian Fleming. You get a voucher and then you can buy the e-books on Amazon for only $1.99 each. Has anyone read them before? Thoughts? Would you recommend them? If anyone is interested: http://local.amazon.com/national/B00BD2YIH0

Well, I must be off. I can’t stay much longer now, being at work and all… but I promise to return later! Hope you all have a wonderful day!!

DEANIE, most schools do close for President’s Day. We would have this weekend as a holiday but we lost it to a snow day makeup.

Hi, FELIPE, how long have you not been able to log in here. I know a lot of people had problems with that last week but for once I was not affected. I’ve never read any James Bond/Ian Fleming books so I don’t know whether they are to be recommended or not. I suspect it is a matter of whether you like the genre. I’m not a huge fan of the movies so I suspect I wouldn’t be wild about the books as source material either.

I am finished with the cleaning I intend to do today except for unloading and loading the dishwasher. I am by no means finished. I am just finished for today and I intend to take the rest of the day to relax. I was painfully tired last nigth after not sleeping the night before. I enjoyed my day with my friend but by bedtime last night I had a terrible headache and went to bed earlier than usual. I had a painful catch in my neck at the base of my skull and the discomfort spread and turned into a headache. The catch and the headache have resolved but I’m still a bit sleepy and I know there will be no rest for the weary staring tomorrow morning.

Good evening!

Today was an interesting day for my DS. Firstly, a job he applied for contacted him, sounding very interested. It’s not a brilliant job, but it is a job.
Secondly, the MD who asked for his CV rang and asked him to come for a meeting on Monday. Not an interview, a meeting. Not quite sure what that might mean.
Thirdly, his ex company rang him. The new owners don’t take over until the end of the month, and they got rid of my DS three weeks ago. One of the other two engineers has already moved to a different department, and the remaining engineer can’t cope. Would my DS be willing to do some freelance work?
My reaction was a fairly spectacular array of unprintable words, by far the most polite of which were, “how DARE they!” But, since they are offering him £120 a day plus fuel, it appears they appropriate answer is ’OK!" Hahaha, serves them right.

Graymayne, Thanks for the concern, but I am sure this is just accumulated tiredness, plus a bit of stress. I did sleep a lot better last night, but I will try and take care. I find it very easy NOT to take care of myself when everyone else needs my time and attention. I also have no intention of going anywhere near a Doctor unless I feel a LOT worse than this, lol!

Felipe, hello! I don’t think I have ever read any Bond either. But for that price, I’d say give them a go. I hope you get to pop in more often. How is your family?

Lady Hawke, that sounds like a good day with your friend. I hope you too can catch up on sleep.

Felipe I haven’t read any of Ian Fleming’s books about his James Bond character but I don’t think you would find them close to the style of the films. My DS has read some of these books but he has never been a fan of the movies.

I saw *The Hobbit" today, at last, and was blown away by it. I approve of the way that the storyline of the book has been set within the context of what was happening in Middle Earth. All this information was imparted nearly twenty years later with the publication of The Lord of the Rings, and more was revealed when The Silmarillion was issued after Tolkien’s death. It turns what was an adventure story for children into something much more important and very relevant to the content of LOTR trilogy.

Got to go and watch TV.

good luck to your son Asti and hopes that your sleeping problem is just nerves… Woo Hoo and good luck on the interview & meeting to your DS. Will send Felix potion his way. The freelancing sounds good as a filler for right now while he still is job seeking, and maybe could be extra income if one of those jobs does hire him…

hope all turns out well with your DS’s colonoscopy LH hope he is clean as a whistle and I do not envy him or you the St VAlentine’s Day you will have.

I have not read any of the Ian Fleming books Felipe . Having really no interest in the movies I also have no interest in the books.

glad you enjoyed The Hobbit Graymayne I was blown away also, Beautiful scenery, lots of action, great additions to the book. I see why, now, that Peter is making it into 3 movies. Can’t wait for the next two

Anyone interested in seeing The Host when it comes out?

Off to the Family Dollar bbl…

ASTI, I am absolutely thrilled by the number and possibility of the phone calls your DS received today. I would have righteous indignation about the one from his former company but I would also be relieved they were having to admit they needed him and are willing to pay him again.

We would not have celebrated Valentine’s Day on Thursday anyway. Thursday is just a school/work night. My DS has made reservations for Saturday night for dinner. Honestly, I don’t know I am that excited about it. We will have to go to my parent’s house on Saturday to dig through more old dusty things. By the time I am finished with that all I ever really want to do is go home, have a shower and collapse with some food. I can’t imagine I am going to feel like coming home, cleaning up, putting on make up and then drive across town for dinner and a movie. Valentine’s Day is a bit more of a manufactured holiday than general. This year I think I would be happy to give it a miss until after I have managed this move. We could have it any time we want. If I am exhausted on Saturday I may try to beg off.

I guess he thought the vacation covered Valentine’s day. :(

I saw you were all having trouble sleeping. I was having the same problem two nights ago. Sunday night into Monday. I just couldn’t seep. I ended up feeling awful at work. I never vomit but I did it twice on Monday. I blame the Chinese food we ate on Sunday. Probably not the same reasons you guys were having trouble sleeping though. :(

for S&H. Don’t think so.
