The movie had alot of material to cover and did a fairly good job of it , however this made it seem jumpy in places. The book had a much darker feel then the first four and so does the movie. The first four were more comedy/adventure. The last three will be DRAMA!
some what a disappointment, o’well theirs still 2 more, i hope their better then the rest of them all….
LemonFairie,
Ahhhhkkkkkk!
Yes, let’s be best friends.
They changed the pole in the middle of my thought. I was writing a response to you. Then, my mother called and said my child woke up crying this morning with her back hurting and I had to go get her. By the time I got back to the computer everything had changed.
At some point today I’ll turn into a pumpkin and disappear off the face of the earth on this trip. If I don’t get back to the computer before then I’ll “see” you on the 27th, if I finish reading out loud by then.
Gambon doesn’t get Dumbledore. That is very disappointing.
the movie was awesome….it was very much faithful to the book and the final duel was breathtaking…............. can`t wait for deathly hallows
it was all right but it did jump around to much I thought.
Disappointing… the book was the longest of the series, while the film was the shortest! they skipped from scene to scene too fast, leaving really juicy spots from the book.
The fight between the order and the death eaters was unbelievable and don’t even get me started on voldemort v. dumbledore, all i have to say is don’t blink and ralph fiennes is so freakin’ awesome as voldemort, absolutely brilliant!
Jack, I’m pretty sure dementors have always had hands, even in the books. I definately remember something about hands around Harry’s throat when he almost got kissed in PoA. I thought the movie was awesome considering how much stuff needed to be in it. All the acting was nearly perfect and a lot of the script came straight out of the book. Several really great lines were there that weren’t in the book, too (I’m sorry, Professor. I must not tell lies.). The only real problem I had was that it didn’t make me cry. I’d have liked Harry and Dumbledore’s talk at the end to be showed in greater detail and for Harry to brood over Sirius’s death a little more. All in all, I thought it was great.
I’m pretty sure the dementors had hands in the PoA movie as well.
other then that I think the movie was excellent. it might have been the longest book in the series and the shortest movie in the series but it was still brilliant! you have to understand there were a lot of key points that the director had to show in this particular movie. i loved how this movie was dark…i cant wait for the last two movies.
I saw it yesterday (and I’m going back tomorrow to take my son to see it) and thought it was excellent. Yes, things were missing that I’d like to have seen – St Mungo’s particularly – and some things were different from the book but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. It did make me cry – I started when Sirius and Harry were in the tapestry room! Overall though, I think the film was true to the spirit of the book and I don’t think you can ask for more than that, when you’re trying to make a film from a book the size of a door-step! I tend to look upon the books as one entity and the films as another and OotP is my favourite of the books and now my favourite of the films too.
I went to see it at midnight and sat in the theaters for three huors before it started. They let people into the theaters every half hour. It was so totally not worth it.
Uh Jack….dementors have always had hands…just read PoA.
well the book was better than the movie there was alot of things i hoped 2 see bt not included erm the movie was reaallly short and i tink a better job could have been done alot of things had been changed within the movie to the book since when did harry see snapes worst meomery in occulemcy classes
the movie was okay. I don’t think any of the movies os super fantastic great, but this one was at least funny. I laughed so much. I think Luna ja Umbridge were the best. And Kingsley. :D haha. It was kind of short and they had left quite a lot of things out and changed the plot, but oh well. But sirius’ clothes were so weird, he looked like some kind of a hippie. xD
Loved Luna, the black family tree, Trelawney getting sacked and the thestrals. Why didn’t they cut Grawp? And I don’t get/didn’t like the whole wizards turning to smoke and zooming around the room during the ministry fight. I missed Fawkes saving Dumbledore and the valentines day date.
Overall, I loved the movie. I thought it was a good shot at a very complicated book. The actors have improved SO much (even though I’ve loved them from the beginning it is great seeing them grow into very believable characters). Weren’t the twins great? I even liked the dark look of the film—it portrayed the dark feeling of the book very well.
Things I wasn’t as happy about were the change in the dementors. I liked the way they looked in the third movie much better but, this is just me being picky. I also missed out on the more fast paced and frequent dialouge that Ron, Harry and Hermione have in the other movies. I realize that Harry seperates himself much of the fifth book. But, I really wanted to see more of the relationships being played out. I would have been happy to see more of that and less of Harry’s pulsing veins. It was almost as if witnessing a detox. But, again, it conveyed an important feeling the book portrays. One of the scenes with Harry and Snape really made me understand what was going on in the book a little better… about how Voldemort is attacking Harry. I never really understood that until I saw the movie. I wanted to see more of the Department of Mysteries (wouldn’t that round room with all the doors been a blast to put in this movie?). Also, Harry’s friends fought much more in the book. They were hurt in the book. I missed out on seeing them shine a little bit more. Oh, and while the music was very good I really liked the music from the first three films better.
Those things are again me just being picky. I loved the movie and think they did a great job. I am glad the director is sticking around for the next movie. But, I also heard that there was a change in screen writers this time around and one from previous movies is coming back for the sixth and seventh movie. That makes me happy.
The dementors have always had hands, in the books too.
The film was good..
What i hateda about ths one is that the film was too short and some scenes were not so good played.
The ministry battle scene was so cool…and the thestrals, and umbridge. It was cool.
But it was too difficult for Yates to make a short movie from a long book and make it feel not to rush.
Overall it was pretty good. I’d give it 7 out of 10.
This film was an interesting mixture for me. In some respects, it surpassed what I had envisioned from the novel. The battle between Voldemort and Dumbledore is a good example of this. It was absolutely AMAZING.
But on the other hand, they took the longest novel and cut it into the shortest film. There were several plot points missing and/or changed from the book and I noticed these. They were persistent reminders that took me ‘out of the film,’ so to speak.
And the tone & feel of the film also seemed a bit uneven to me. It’s true that this is a darker story, but while the beginning was very dark, suspenseful and realistically ‘gritty’ (almost too much so for me from the arrival of the dementors to arrival at the Order’s HQs), the battle scene between the kids & the death eaters at the ministry of magic wasn’t nearly as gory & detailed as I was expecting (i.e. they’re all practically dead by the time reinforcements show up in the novel, what with broken legs, etc).
That being said it was still a tremendous film and my new second-favorite (Prisoner of Azkaban still holds my No. 1 slot).
As always, when a movie is made from a much loved book, there were good things and not-so-good things. Umbridge was perfect. Gambon continues to disappoint. Luna was marvelous! Most of it was as true to the spirit of the book as it could be in such a short time. They always have to condense and consolidate several separate events into one scene – i.e. the occlumency lessons. My biggest complaint (because it is SO against the spirit of the book and of Harry himself) is that they had Harry hand over the prophecy. The fight to keep it from them is the whole reason for the huge battle at the MOM and the reason several of the DA members were injured.
Also, I’m still having trouble with McGonagall stepping down from Umbridge on the staircase. But I suppose it was in the spirit of the moment in McGonagall’s office after she learns of Harry’s detention where she tells Harry that he needs to be careful and her voice is “low and anxious”.
Finally (for now) I still don’t like the portrayal of the dementors. I didn’t like them in POA and I don’t like these either. None of them have matched my mental picture of what a dementor should look like.
I thought this was the best film by far, and my complaints seem to be those mentioned be several fans already, missed the fact that Ron and Hermiones role was cut so small but i do understand that the film would never be able to last 7 hours. Didn’t like the flying blurs that was the fighting in the Veil Room, and cannot believe that the cut the multi-doored room! I think that the Love Room will be important in Book 7 so cant understand why it was cut out, also the mirrot that Sirius gave to Harry in the book, JKs already mentioned that this will be an important aspect of the plot line for book 7 so WHY!!! was this deleted! Overall brill film, fave so far and Voldemort v. Dumbledore was amazing!!
I really really liked it! If you didn’t see it in IMAX 3D you TOTALLY should. It was awesome! I think I liked PoA just a tiny bit more, but this is a close second for my favorite of the series.
The Movie was OK, but very disapointing. It was too jumpy and the scence with the Occlumency sesions i thought was horrible. We also didn’t go to any class’s except Umbridges. The Book was way better. Read it, its good. And i hope when they make the half blood prince, it isn’t jumpy and has every detail. Even if the movie was 5 hour long with every detail in it, i’d watch it for sure!
The movie was fine….but bring on the book!
Ok, so I have made comments about there being so much left out but, it was amazing. Everything they made up fit in so well. However, I do think they should have left Cho’s friend in.
it was one of the best i thought. the duel and DA scenes were great. one thing i didnt like was Sirius’ comment during the Ministry scene. he said something along the lines of “good one, James”. I thought that went too far with Sirius’ comparison of harry with james. i don’t think thats their relationship. i dont believe that line was in the book. if im wrong let me know.
I loved this movie. There are a few things missing like the relationship of the trio there really was no Ron through out this one. Luna was great Hermione with Grawp was great Neville was great too. I would have liked alittle bitmore of the torture of umbridge by the twins instead of her standing there with that ticking thing. DD seemed to be weaker then LV which I did not lke at all that actor still hasn’t gotten the true DD. I fear he never will. Snape was good too as was LV in this I miss Dobby though that would have made more sense and they could have included Neville if they were worried about missing him. At least the magic is back for this one. As a movie it was great but the books will always shine more and leave you wanting more the movies have not done this for a while the fir and second kept the chacters the others left major things out this one at least tried to put it in where they could. I’m at least happy with this one.
Disappointing. The most Muggle-ish film of the five. No magic, no wonder, no spark. Just another American adventure film with bad guys and good guys and some random special effects during the fight scenes. Also very disjointed and bumpy pace to the editing.
This is the first of the five movies that I won’t go back and see again and certainly won’t bother buying on DVD when it comes out.
Since when did dementors have hands!!!??? In general i liked the film as much as the others: not a lot. The film skips from scene to scene and the characters are never really allowed time to develop. I loved the DA scenes but again, not enough time was spent on them.
