I know this is a handcrafted masterpiece, but for me it is still just a pretty book that I would like to read once. I am sorry, but the ten pounds (somewhere around $20?) is about all I care to spend. I think the moldy bread and chocolate is just disgusting.

If I was one of Jo’s “special people”, it would be priceless to me. Not for the book, but to be in Jo’s inner circle now that would be something.

Lady Hawke your explanation of Jamestown and Berkley Plantation sounds like you came straight from VA. Every good fourth grade student in VA is taught that version of Thanksgiving. The younger ones hear about the Pilgrims before 4th grade. Now I hear the Spanish want to claim the first Thanksgiving was in St Augustine FLA several years before VA.

I posted this earlier on the previous poll, but as it is relevant I am reposting.

Morning all! Today I have received Sotheby’s catalogue for the sale of J.K.Rowling’s “The Tales of Beedle the Bard”. It is 7”x 5” approx, printed on stiff card, and the front cover is white with a reproduction of Jo’s title page illustration in blue. Below is a block capital subtitle – A collection of wizarding fairy-tales by J.K.Rowling. Then comes a modest Sotheby’s, below which is “London 13th December 2007”. All of this blue printing is impressed into the stiffer card cover so that it is embossed on the inside cover which is green. Summarising the contents: 14 pages are directly concerned with auction information on the book and necessary purchasing details; one page is Jo’s introduction to the book; 3 pages concern The Children’s Voice campaign for which this book is being auctioned; there is a full-page photograph of Jo in smart casual dress, seated and holding the opened book; four pages contain photographs of the silver-smithing process for the book cover by the Edinburgh firm; 25 pages are photographs of the book’s deckle-edged paper and illustrations and text by Jo taken at strange angles. The back cover is white and features an impressed illustration by Jo of three skulls which appears at the head of the “Tale of the Three Brothers”. It is a good quality product, artistically produced and considering that this will be the nearest I, or anyone other than the future owner ever get to the item, I am well satisfied with this memento. She could have made a much bigger impact on the selected charity by publishing a book that can be mass-distributed. I would pay $10-15 for a copy that’s not “unique”. Good stories are meant to be shared, not hoarded. I know how disappointed my kids will be because there are fairy tales by JK Rowling out there that they aren’t allowed to read. I haven’t even told them about it!

In short, if I were rich enough to buy the original hand-written work, I would feel too guilty to own it (not to mention nervous of thieves). If I were to buy it, it would only be under the condition that I could share the stories with the world.

Luna Aloha I do have diabetes too. I guess we are twins in that too!!

I have battled diabetes and high tryglicerides for ages. I can’t wait for my next blood work though. I have been posting great numbers on my gluco machine since the heart incident. I can’t believe it!! I never saw anything under 100 before. Now I see them all the time. It’s the new diet.

I have a new way of thinking that one of my brothers gave me. He says he thinks of all carbs like he is allergic to them. Just like someone who is alergic to peanuts would never eat anything with peanuts or made with peanut oil. I think of rice, bread and pasta as if I was alergic to them too. I look at it and think “poison. It will make me sick.”

It has helped me tremendously. I now only eat 100% whole wheat bread, brown rice, and 100% whole wheat pasta. I measure all my servings and I eat a lot of vegetables and fruits. (NO GRAPES.) There are lots of things I can eat but I have to be smarter about it. My numbers show the difference. My weight too. I have lost 15 pounds since the heart incident.

Madame Minerva,

I like the sound of the diet. My numbers are not good on my blood test, but nothing else shows up. I wish I had your discipline. Have a great Thanksgiving. You have probably already mentioned it, but what is on your menu?

Cool Grandma

I’m posting this again too.

I just found out that the daughter that was coming for dinner tomorrow won’t be here until suppertime. Her in-laws moved up their dinnertime from 6:00 pm to 1:00pm. Everyone else is going to my other daughter’s on Sunday. So they probably won’t eat anything but desserts. Of course the kids will probably eat something. You know kids, they eat all the time.

Well, I have my turkey legs stewing on the stove to make my dumplings, the onions and celery simmering for the stuffing, and the cornbread cooking for the stuffing. Now I’m ready to start the pies. I think I’ll put everything together and cook it earlier so that my D/S and I can eat it later. He’s home today so why wait until tomorrow for the things that will be ready. It’s beginning to smell good.

Madame Minerva and HouseElf, My DS is diabetic, too. We have found that attitude is the real key.

The day he got his results back and got the diagnosis, we knew it would change his eating habits, but not much.

When we went to see the diatician she started in with the little plastic molded foods to show proper portion size. That was fine. When she started to tell him foods he could not have, I had to interrupt her.

The fact is that he can eat or drink anything he wants. but he has to decide if it’s worth it.

He can have a beer, but it would be instead of eating a meal. He can have cake and ice cream, but what “healthy” food or meal is he willing to give up?

Diabeties does not have to be a disease of denial, but it is one of choices.

The things that are “forbidden” are the very things we crave.

Since nothing is “forbidden”, he does not feel deprived. What he chooses to eat or drink is just that, his choice.

I do not patrol his food choices. He is a grown man and is responsible for his own actions. We do not fight over what foods either of us eats. ;)

Well, I do have a bit more work to get out before I leave and we are being cut loose in about 45 minutes. ;)

Bbl. ;)

Nothing. Unfortunatly, her choice to write a private gift book for some friends and then dangle it about publicly so that fans know about it but can not readily read, or obtain it has left a very bad taste in my mouth. If its so private and special that she wants to keep it jsut for her close friends thats fine. Write it for them and give it as a gift at Christmas. As for the charity donation that has made this public, there are any number of items and special editions that could she could have auctioned and people will pay. If she is going to make this public then make it public. Power seems to have gone to jo’s head.

Hello again! I just have to say this, sometimes I get a little confused when I see – D/S because I don’t know if that is Darling Spouse or Darling Son, on the other hand D/D is clear as Darling Daughter. Does anyone else get confused or is it just me.

Regarding Myrth’s post about the exclusivity of TALES OF BEEDLE THE BARD, another writer-Stephen King-had the same problem when his fans found out that he had published THE DARK TOWER with a small press, which would sold out by the time most fans found out about it. King’s fans demanded it but King held firm, refusing to issue an edition for general release. King’s grounds for refusing to allow it to be published basically addressed the fact that he felt it would confuse his readers who expected horror or suspense fiction from him; and since THE DARK TOWER was cross-genre, it wouldn’t be what his fans expected.

King later relented and THE DARK TOWER (and the following six books) saw print to excellent sales and strong sales, as well.

In time, perhaps Jo will realize that to issue THIS as a charity book, instead of waiting to write her HARRY POTTER ENCYCLOPEDIA, would be a money-maker for the charity and do so NOW, instead of perhaps two years down the road when the ENCYCLOPEDIA may be out.

Given that Rowling’s visibility is currently high, now is the time to release a charity edition of TALES OF BEEDLE THE BARD for a retail price of under $20.

This is Jo’s decision, of course, and must abide by her decision. But surely the thought had crossed her mind?

Rhiannon I’m confused, I was not being sarcastic in my post about my Sotheby’s catalogue. I am delighted about it. I posted a detailed description because people had wondered why I wanted to buy it. It was better than I expected, because catalogues are usually like glossy magazines. This is something special and presented rather like a small gift book.

Whoa..I’m completely lost here…why is everyone talking about diabetes and Thanksgiving? There wasn’t even a post about Thanks giving before that fourth one? What am I missing? Hmmm…as for the poll…I’d certainly pay $1 billon If I had the money to spare…come to think of it, if I had the money I’d buy it regardless of the price!

Hi, Mistic Willow I’m kind of new, and I don’t think we’ve been on here at the same time since you came back. Your post above made me smile, as I’m often confused with the abbreviations. (Doesn’t take much to confuse me, lol :) When you first wrote something about your DD and referred to her as “she” (daughter, I now presume?), my first reaction was “How does she come about having a Dumbledore in her family? !!! Have a great holiday!

I think we’ll see Tales of Beedle the Bard available in mass paperback fairly soon, most probably similar to Quidditch through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts (whether the proceeds will go to Comic Relief UK or to a different charity really doesn’t matter too much, does it?). Does anyone seriously think that JKR’s US and UK publishers (not to mention the other publishers worldwide) haven’t already burned the telephone lines to discuss with her a mass edition?

For me, the questions are simple:

1. When? I’m guessing at spring or summer 2008.

2. How long? The handwritten stories total five, for about 5500 words apparently. JKR could add more stories, so that the typeset version has more length. Or, I can imagine what would essentially be a photostatic version, showing JKR’s handwriting and any illustrations (would be nicer in a hard cover then, yes?). The cover would have printed moonstones and all that, imitating the special copies made.

But, I can also see it as a reproduction of Dumbledore’s personal copy, with a rather battered looking (printed obviously) cover, with a preface by Hermoine Granger….

Elsewhere, someone (roonwit) pointed out that JKR probably doesn’t have the time or inclination to write more Tales for the moment, an observation that is probably correct. So, I’m leaning toward the photostatic version (I know that’s not the right word, I just can’t locate the right one in my memory), with proceeds going to charity. JKR is predictable after all.

Nice to see a new poll….

I voted for “I’ve got 10 pounds, a stale battery, three moldy biscuits and a slab of chocolate, Is that enough?”

That is about all I would pay for it. It doesn’t bother me that we can’t buy it but I do think it is in poor taste to dangle it in front of us. It was rude and rather tactless.

Most auctions, are private and those that are involved know about, then you read about it in the paper the next day. That is how it should be.

I have to agree that Joe was tactless and cruel in this respect, but as I said, I really don’t care, but at least keep it where it belongs, Private!

Heya everyone! Cool grandma how cool are you!! Here I was thinking nooooo I’ve lost the last few pages of the last poll, and wandering where the history button is when there you are telling me! So I am fully caught up and a very happy bunny. (Though mystified. Is there anything that this machine can’t do?) Thanks also to Sirius B who first said about the history button xx. Just a few remarks. Gosh Lady Hawke, what a fascinating and detailed family history you have, it all sounds very exotic to this Brit! Thanks also for the book recommendation, I’ve not heard of the author but will look him up. Wolfie loved your Bll Bryson story, your poor friend! I’d have been too shy to say anything in case it wasn’t him and I made a fool of myself! He is so funny isn’t he? And to everyone celebrating Happy Thanksgiving and as (I think it was) Forgetmenot said, Happy Thursday! I’m here for a while (footie on tv oh joy) if anyone wants to play.
