Lady Hawke It is a misconception that hard workers are “losers”. OK Hufflepuff people don’t have bravery as an outstanding feature, but Cedric was not lacking in that attribute. They are not supposed to be brilliant students, but wasn’t Cedric also top of his class? And they are too nice to take unfair advantage of people or situations and they take care of others and are not only looking out for number one. ;)

There are many worse things to be than well rounded and weoll liked. ;)

One can be very brave and qualify for Gryffindor based only on that. You can be so bravve and your intelligence level could be that of Crabbe or Goyle and still be in Griffendor.

One can be very intellegent, but not nice or caring and still qualify for Ravenclaw.

One can also be very brave, smart and overtly outgoing but still be willing to use any means to be sure to come out ahead. That will qualify you for Slytherin.

It seems that the other three houses strive for one or two character qualities, sometimes at the expense of having well rounded healthy personalities.

Actually the only house that would positively be unacceptable to me, personally, is Slytherin. And I cannot say that I lack all aspects of the Slytherin, as much as I would like to disavow those parts of my peronality. I wish I was always noble, or brilliant or kind and accepting, it just ain’t so. I am human. ;)

I am glad you are discussing new computers. The DS is looking for a new laptop. He has decided that he can live with a 15 inch screen, but we are still looking for one that has speed and capacity for the pictures and project plans that he wants to put on it. ;)

Off to finish getting my clothes ready for work tomorrow. ;)

Deanie said it well. Just because Helga Hufflepuff wanted to give everyone a chance at a magical education doesn’t mean that her house only turns out grunt workers and losers. Tonks was in Hufflepuff, don’t forget. So was Hannah Abbott who took over the Leaky Cauldron. Running a business is not an easy feat. I see them as the people who actually make things happen becasue they aren’t daunted by the complexity or the amout of work that needs to be done to meet their goal.

LadyHawke, I used one of Leaky’s owls to send you the recipe. She got impatient because I wasn’t quite sure how to tie the scroll to her leg, but I am sure she has arrived by now.

Morning

I have my yard half weed eated and decided I needed a break. I wasted a lot of time trying to find the string to reload it. I finally decided to go buy a new roll when I found it still in the truck. Lol Of course figuring out how to restring it took some time. Actually it was trying to get it apart that took the time. At least my daughter will be here the next time it has to be done and she can start the lawn mower. Too bad I don’t have room to use a riding mower. It at least starts with a key.

Won I don’t think you have to worry about not being placed in Ravenclaw. I’m sure you will answer the questions in a way to make sure. I think PB got placed in Hufflepuff because he has matured and probably answered the questions with a problem solving mind. After all being editor at his school paper has bound to affect the way he would get things done.

Breal is over. I need to get back at it before it gets too hot.

Just imagine being put in Gryffindor and compared to Wormtail, or Slytherin and compared to Snape (good thing, sorta), or…you get what I mean.

The students in the book did get to have a say in which House they wanted to be in…just don’t know if the Sorting Hat always agrees and sorts them according to what they want.

Am just happy I’ve been sorted in H, G, and R houses (yep, CoolG, I agree that the changes that everyday life leads me to affect which House I get sorted in, and my mood that day). I’ve tried so hard trying to get into S but always failed. Maybe, I’ll finally get into the green house in Pottermore. Ha! Then I can say I’ve been there and done that. Hee.

Morning, all! I intend to go back to bed ASAP (up late to finish DH again, sob sob sob and up early to take LP to her volunteering commitment), but wanted to run through here first.

Very well said on Hufflepuff House, Deanie! Those are my thoughts, exactly. There is NOTHING loser-ish about Hufflepuff! Anyone who genuinely identifies with and exemplifies the qualities of that House should be beyond proud to be there. I can swear for a fact that LadyHawke absolutely exemplifies the very best of that House, but then again she also qualifies under the great qualities of Ravenclaw and, though she personally doubts it in herself more than she should, also has the fine qualities of a Gryffindor, AND the determination (without the less savory details) of a Slytherin. We are, as Deanie said, ALL human, and all have traits of all four Houses. The people who are calling Hufflepuffs “losers” should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. And I don’t think they can really mean it, either, I think it’s just their frustration and worry over getting Sorted into a House they don’t identify with speaking, not that that excuses such poor behavior.

Having said that, however, I would genuinely be upset to be Sorted into ANY House other than Gryffindor. As Sirius said (nice avatar, btw!!), it is the only House I identify with completely, and it’s a very strong attachment. I’ve been a Gryffindor in my heart ever since I first walked with Harry through the Sorting process on my first read through SS/PS and have identified myself as such all along, bolstered by every Sorting test I’ve ever taken. My identity and self-concept is wrapped up in being a Gryffindor, I LOVE being a Gryffindor, I have all the stuff to be a Gryffindor. I genuinely do not think I am clever enough to be a Ravenclaw (no comments from the peanut gallery, please!), I’m DEFINITELY not hard-working enough to be a Hufflepuff, and while I can certainly display Slytherin traits (the good and the bad), I hope that that is not my dominant personality. I don’t necessarily consider myself a brave person, but I will always stand up, vocally, for the little guy (much to my children’s dismay on many occasions), I can be daring (as long as heights and vegetables are not involved…), and I try to always be chivalrous. Not that I always succeed, but I do try. Plus, red is my favorite color, and I prefer gold above the other metals, soooo…. LOL

There’s a lot more to it than that, obviously, and it all applies. I’m very, very invested in getting into my proper House. And I want my Pottermore email so I can get in there and settle this once and for all! The anticipation is driving me wild!

In some ways it would actually be beneficial to be Sorted as another House, Hufflepuff in particular, as the other three Houses will get a LOT more new information revealed on the site, but still.

As for the people who are quitting the site over it, though… I wish I believed that those signs of protest would make a difference in how the Sorting is handled, but I don’t think it really will. Jo, as we know, is very strong minded and particular about how she handles everything to do with Harry’s world, and if it’s been set up the way she wants it I can’t imagine it being changed, no matter how many people quit. With the many millions of users dying to get in there, I doubt it will be a big enough number to register an impact, and even if it did, as I said, I don’t think she would change it. I do wish she’d set it up to begin with as it is in the books, with your preference truly having final say. I don’t know why she veered from her own canon in this instance. sigh If I DO (please, please, please no) get Sorted into a different House, I don’t plan to quit, only because I want the experience and would therefore feel I’d be cutting off my own nose to spite my face, but I will definitely not be happy.

In other news… I have been diligently working on my story bible notebooks, which I now believe will take me until the end of time to complete. Or at least another month or two, LOL. I started off thinking one big one would do it and am now into three with the possibility of several more. I had to go buy 3" binders last night to replace the 2" ones I’d started with, which were all overflowing. It’s incredible the amount of notes one can accumulate over 20+ years! But despite my kitchen counter not looking any clearer, I am feeling more organized and like I’ll be able to find the information I need when I want it, which has not been true up ‘til now. I’m just anxious to get them finished so I can get back to the creative side of the process. This has the feel of busy-work to it, no matter how beneficial it will prove to eventually be.

The DS and I are going to see Huey Lewis & the News on Friday, which should be a great concert. I’ve never seen them live, though one of my college roommates was the goddaughter of the base player. I always hoped she’d get us tickets, but no dice. In September we’re going to see the B-52’s at the same winery. It’s a fun evening, sitting outside and drinking wine while the band plays. I had trouble with Ticketmaster’s ticketing system with that one, though, although I was able to download and print the Huey ones just fine, so they had to send them a different way, and the new email happened to have a link to click for other upcoming concerts…. one of which was Journey, Foreigner and Night Ranger (I don’t really care for Night Ranger much, but I LOVE Journey and Foreigner!) at Key Arena in October, so I had to get tickets for the DS and I. They were not in the budget, but since the tickets were nearly sold out we wound up in nosebleed anyway, which weren’t too terribly expensive. I can’t wait!

October is going to be a fun month: I have a three-day weekend get-away with my writer chickees, my local writer’s conference, and now this concert. I was also really hoping to somehow be able to swing a quick trip to NY to see Dan’s play since I missed out on it in February, but the same issue as then continues to plague me now: finances. sigh Getting the (much cheaper) concert tickets is helping to take the sting off of that inability to get to NY. I did look at plane tickets this morning, as I had a “special” email from Alaska airlines, but it would still be pretty pricey thanks to hotel costs, etc. Bleh. I so need to win that lottery, and if I do, I will share it with all of you. We could buy out the orchestra section of the play and all go see it together! Huh, I guess I better go buy a lottery ticket… ;)

And on that note, I am off for a nap. The son and I are going to see DH again tonight with the son’s best friend and his mother, who is a good friend of mine. They haven’t seen it yet. Unfortunately we won’t be seeing it in IMAX, which I really want to do at least once more before it leaves theaters, but it will be awesome regardless!

Have a great day, everyone!

Wotcher Ya’ll

Wow Won thank God you and your living space are not damaged. I have only experienced a 2.0 (I think that’s what it was) in my life. The only effect was seeing the walls of my bedroom sway once and having my dog look around whipping his head back and forth a bit and then at me with a “what the heck was that?” look. Which is the same look I had on my face. Took a few seconds to figure out it was an earthquake. That computer system is a good deal!!

I agree LemonFaerie and if it is Gryffindor’s saying those things about Hufflepuffs, well then they do not deserve to be in Gryffindor. I do not remember any canon where Jo states everyone being sorted has the final say in which House they get sorted into, tho it is implied by Harry telling Albus he can request Gryffindor like he did, and I think by some of DD’s talks with Harry. Remember that it is very brave of you to eat some veggies, as I can attest you have done (tho not ALL of them in your salad!!!) How is the exercising going? I have now lost 23 lbs from when I was at my heaviest. Actually broke into the 260s at my weigh in this AM. I am feeling happy about that. And thanks for noticing, I really like that picture of me.

I have always wondered how Wormtail got sorted into Gryffindor – he has the bravery of a dead maple leaf!!!! What got him in there?

Sending a huge PROTAGO to those of you on the East Coast, hope y’all stay safe.

are you going to be home tomorrow Ironsos ? I will be going past your abode in the late afternoon, like between 4 & 5 PM, may stop in to say hi if I don’t have to hurry to make the Trax to get home…

what is a story bible notebook LemonFaerie ? Enjoy those concerts for me too please.

It seems that each House is going to have info that the other Houses don’t get….. I put forth the suggestion that we share all that info with each other; after all – we are our own House called Castle. It just seems the fair and right thing to do to me…..( I know, someone will argue that in canon each House had it’s secrets; but we are a family, our own House and we are all dying to know EVERYTHING about everything Potter, right?)

off for a nap of my own bbl

HERMINE, the poor little owl arrived but since I was on my Blackberry I was not seeing him as he flung himself at my window. I finally let him in and retrieved the recipes. Thanks so much. I’m going to give the poor little guy a rest before I send him back out.

I found a Friendship request sitting on the windowsill as well and have responded.

People are saying they felt the earthquake here as well but I suppose I was distracted and didn’t notice it.

SIRIUS, I’m all for spilling our guts over any trifling detail we find. I think JEN has suggested we put the information in a safe place so only those who want to see it can access it as they please.

Before more people than PB have access to Pottermore we need to decide where that place will be. Should we start a new thread at the NEW CASTLE?

Dittany for LH!

And Protegos for Won! And everyone on the east coast. The earthquake sounds like a real shaker, and that hurricane… sigh Good luck. I suggest battening down the hatches!

I usually sleep through earthquakes, I was so used to them growing up in CA, but there were a few pretty big ones that definitely got me out of bed. One was when LD was a baby. I grabbed her up out of her crib and went running for the door and it knocked me completely off my feet. Luckily for her I landed on my posterior, so she was fine, but I was sore for days afterward! We had quite a lot of breakage with that one, as well as a few other times. My parents sustained HEAVY breakage in the last central coast (CA) one they experienced before they moved, which included a lot of loss from their winery. Several people died in that one, too. It was really horrible.

We haven’t had one since we moved here eight years ago, which I think must be some sort of record (knock on wood that I haven’t jinxed us now), but the last big Seattle one was pretty bad, too, lots of broken windows and things all over the place. A friend of mine was walking around downtown and called to tell me all about it right after it hit. We were still in WI at the time.

Well I never got my nap. The story notebooks called to me. I can now say that everything is at least in place in the research one (which is beyond bulging, I’m going to have to cut it into two again) and in the revision/submission one, which has an awful lot of paper in it, but most of it is several versions of the same 200 pages. Which leaves the main story one now, which will still require a LOT of work, but at least the rest of it’s out of my hair and contained for the time being. I sure do wish the counter looked clearer, though. It doesn’t look like I’ve accomplished a single thing, and in fact looks a bit worse. Ugh.

After that I got sucked into paying bills, not fun, but at least they’re done. So, whatever my counter may look like, I am feeling accomplished! :)

Sirius yes, that was the canon I meant. It’s never stated explicitly, you’re right, but Harry definitely gets to choose and does tell Albus he’ll be able to, which is good enough for me. I want that same choice! And I agree with you on any “Gryffindors” saying those things about Hufflepuffs. If so, they do NOT deserve to be in the Gryffindor House. I do really, REALLY wish we knew what it was the Sorting Hat saw in Pettigrew. It slays me that he’s a Gryffindor. He’s neither brave, nor chivalrous, although I suppose a (weak) case could be made for “daring.” He’d have to be, in some form, to spend all that time with Voldie. It’s too bad there wasn’t a 5th House for “Baddies Only.” LOL Then Slytherin wouldn’t have the bad reputation because only the ones from ALL Houses who were truly bad inside would go to the “Baddie” house and everyone in the other four houses would all be known as good guys, no matter which one they were in. I guess that would have been too obvious… ;)

As for the story bible – it’s basically just a 3-ring binder (or twenty) with all the details of whatever you’re writing. So I have categories for each of my characters, the setting, the plot, the research, etc., all broken down into sub-categories so I can find everything (finally!) I’ve had all my information stuffed into notebooks, on little scraps of paper, in bulging files, file boxes, manila envelopes, ziploc baggies, you name it, for years and years and I could never find anything when I needed it. I have notes I’ve completely forgotten even taking. I tried to do a story-bible for the book I finished last year, but it didn’t really come out right. I hadn’t figured out the “formula” for an effective way to set it up. But then I created a giant one for the LeakyCon trip and it was set up perfectly, so I used that strategy for the story bible this time, and it’s working like a charm! I’m so relieved! Finally, my information will all be at my fingertips.

It’s just unfortunate that I left it so late to start one/figure it out, because there is SO much stuff to go through and sort into its proper place. The research alone is in one giant 3-ring binder, which is overflowing and needs to be further divided into another one. Then the one I have set up for printing chapters out as I go and revising/editing is also full to the brim, and it doesn’t even have the revision classes I’ve taken files in it that I was hoping to keep all together. The one related only to story information is already full and I still have a completely full file box and two huge piles of manila folders jammed with stuff to somehow fit in there. That one notebook will probably become at least another two, maybe three, by the time I’m done.

So, lots still to do, but I really can literally feel the weight and cobwebs clearing out of my head. It’s very hard to think clearly and try to be creative when there’s all that mess and chaos all over the place, at least for me. It’s also been sort of validating in a weird way. Even though I have years worth of writing to do on this series, going through all of this has made me realize just how much work I’ve already put into it, and it’s nothing to sneeze at. Has some of it probably been a waste of time/wrong direction? Sure, but in the end I think it will lead to a stronger story. And hopefully, once I really get cranking on this one, the rest will fall into place a lot faster.

Congratulations on the weight loss, Sirius! That’s awesome, I’m so proud of you! Keep up the good work. I hope you’re feeling better, too, along with seeing the progress on the scale.

I’m having a little trouble (okay, a lot!) getting back on track since we’ve been home. I think part of it is the kids still being on vacation, plus we’ve had some birthdays and other events lately, so we’re in summer party mode, LOL, not wanting to get back to real life. But I’ve also decided I need a new, really big motivator. Needing to drop a lot of weight to get on that ride was HUGE and definitely did the trick, but there’s nothing else now that has the same pull for me. Health, looks, clothes, family, all those things… they’re motivating and important, but they’re not that HUGE, looming thing that I have to prepare for like the ride was. We decided maybe we’d plan another family trip for winter 2012 to go skiing in Utah (Brianhead, is that very far from you? I was there as a teenager and it seems like it wasn’t terribly far from Salt Lake, but I can’t remember now.) That trip would definitely require me to keep losing and to be in much better shape than I am now, so I’m trying to build that up in my head. It’s just that absolutely nothing compares with Harry or makes me as excited to accomplish something as Harry, so we’ll have to see if it works or not.

I agree with needing a place to discuss Pottermore. Would it be easiest to just save that for CC, or does everyone want to use the new castle? I haven’t been over there in forever, but whatever you guys think. We should definitely keep spoilers off Leaky.

And with that, I am on to the next thing… about time to pick up LP from volunteering, then I have to get ready for the movie tonight. I hope I can stay awake, since I didn’t get my nap I’m pretty beat down right now! Yikes. See you all later. :)

Evening all! I finally managed to see Deathly Hallows today in 2D. The film is now down to four showings per day. I was in one of the small, cosy screens where you can mentally shut out the rest of the audience and they were all very quiet and attentive. I thought it was an excellent production and I was pleased to see Minerva McGonagall having her moment of glory. I loved seeing Hogwarts being protected with extra spells. I especially enjoyed Neville’s moments in the film, he turned out to be a real credit to his family. It was good to meet Aberforth finally. The trio were excellent and the scenes in Gringotts were spectacular, the dragon was amazingly real. Snape finally had a decent sized script to work with and all his scenes were brilliant.

I was sorry to see that Professor Sprout was given nothing to do, nor Madame Pomfrey. Percy Weasley might just as well not have turned up for all the presence he had in the film. Bill Weasley didn’t get to give his warning about goblin behaviour to Harry. There was no mention about Lupin and Tonks young baby before Harry ( who hasn’t been around for months) speaks of him. It was not realistic to have Harry and Voldemort involved in a prolonged duel, only Dumbledore was skilled enough
for that, and I didn’t like the leap off the battlements.

Time to stagger off to bed.
