The LeakyCon scheduling preview is available now. Still no details, but it gives a general idea of a few more specific things for certain days, like the Finding Hogwarts documentary, the musical The Final Battle and the LeakyMug podcast. I’m getting so excited! http://www.leakycon.com/blog/49-days-until-leakycon-2011-reminders-and-programming-previews

MM, are you out there? We haven’t heard from you in a while! Are you still thinking about coming? There are only 100 spots left before they’re sold out. There are also 100 spots left for the Open at the Close park event and if by some chance they don’t sell out of those by June 15, they’ll be available for non-registrants to purchase…so even if you decide not to do the con, there’s a chance (albeit a very small one, since I think it’s likely to sell out before then) you could still join us for the evening in the park! Is anyone else thinking about it? We need someone new to nag and try to convince, LOL!

Afternoon, everyone!

LH hope you’re feeling better now!

Jen I’m so sorry you didn’t enjoy Pirates4. Reading your post, I am in total sympathy. I agree with pretty much everything you said, but somehow I still enjoyed it, at least enough to watch it again with LP sometime this week, as she was in Victoria, BC, when the rest of us went. I’m not sure why, given that I DO agree with your sentiments, LOL. You guys all know how compulsive I can be about movies, particularly HP, but for some reason I felt a little more forgiving for Pirates. I do really hope, though, that they either bring back Will and Elizabeth for the next two (and the other extras you mentioned, especially Pintel and Ragetti), and/or add in another character to root for, for sure. They’re going to need something viable to get a full trilogy out of this new start.

CoolG that museum sounds absolutely amazing! I’ve never been to one like that, though I have been to Titanic exhibits in the past. Obviously nothing like what you experienced. I did see The Unsinkable Molly Brown live in LA, but I was pretty young at the time and didn’t really clue in to her significance until much later, and then when I saw the movie of Titanic it was sort of a jolt to actually see her portrayed (brilliantly by Kathy Bates, I thought!), almost like seeing someone I knew on the ship because it sparked that earlier memory.

I checked Twitter ALL DAY yesterday and into the night waiting for those LeakyCon updates! LOL I was hoping for a few more details today, but it sounds like next week will begin the deluge of info. It’s so exciting! I cannot wait! I put notes under all three kids’ doors last night on Disney World stationary. You can print it out, personalized with your name at the top, from their website, so I did it from “Mom” and wished them all a great day and reminded them that there are only 48 days to go! When I woke up this morning, I had a note under MY door on Disney stationary from “The Kids.” LOL They’re so funny.

One thing that was a small disappointment was in the comments on the updates. Someone had written in that they were expecting Tom Felton to be at LeakyCon and Melissa wrote back that he’ll be in Brazil promoting DH part 2. All this time, I’ve been certain that we’d have at least a couple of cast members at LeakyCon as part of the surprise guests, but it never occurred to me to remember that they will ALL be thick in the middle of promoting the movie that week. :( So hopes are now dashed for ANY movie people to be there. I can’t believe that just never occurred to me. Of course they’re going to be swamped elsewhere. sigh Now I’m really wondering who the surprise guests and keynotes could possibly be. I know JKR is extremely farfetched, but I can’t think who else everyone would be so psyched to see. I don’t particularly care to pay extra for a keynote by David Heyman or anyone like that, though I suppose I would just because. It just better not be Alan Horn! I think he might still be crucified publicly over his handling of the HBP date change!

Another thing they mentioned was the costuming events, etc., and that got me thinking. I have my one for the Ball, of course, but what about the rest of the time? I wasn’t planning to take my McGonagall hat and glasses, but now I’m thinking I will. But for other days… just school robes? Or something more elaborate? Jen and LH what are you guys thinking? I know Jen has school robes. Are you thinking of doing anything more than that? It’s going to be so freaking hot that the thought of walking around in those robes is mildly horrifying, but the FL hotels are at least pretty well versed in keeping it cool inside. But if we have to outside for anything, like Quidditch or the Horcrux Hunt, that could become torturous in robes.

One piece of personally excellent news is that my entire wardrobe of HP related t-shirts will fit perfectly by the time conference roles around, so I know what I’ll be wearing any time we’re not in costume! I have a lot more than I even thought I did, including several from WB, one from Leaky when they were still able to sell them (plus the one from LeakyCon 2009), a We Are Wizards shirt, etc., none of which have ever been worn because they never fit. I did completely wear out the two that DID fit, both from Mugglenet, so those finally had to go to the trash. They had holes in them, were completely stretched out, and the one looked like a tie-dyed shirt because of laundry mistakes over the years, LOL. But I still got comments and compliments or struck up untold numbers of conversations with other HP fans every time I wore them. I was sad to have to toss them, especially as the others didn’t fit to replace them with, but now they will/do, so I’m very excited about that. I may even have to pick up a couple more…. LOL

LP and I are going to work on final details this weekend and getting our packing lists and schedules, etc., all set. I have one giant packing list, but now we’re going to break it down to individual ones for each of us, plus what each person will be responsible for in the day packs for the parks, etc. We’re making up our touring plans and laminating them, plus ID cards for each of the kids with all pertinent info, phone numbers, etc., to keep on them in case we get separated, all that good stuff. The Disney portion is now fully paid for, so we should be getting our travel documents in the next couple of weeks. I need to make up a new checklist now that the original ones have been scribbled over so much they are practically illegible. And it will be a much smaller one, since so much is now done. Yay! I’m also going to make up a new countdown calendar. The one I have posted on our pantry door, with pictures of Hogwarts all over it, started when we still had something like 130 days to go, and is now down to 48!!!

And with that, I am off to exercise! See you all later today!

Really though, I think House Robes would be far too hot to wear to anything except indoor events. Even if I had them I would not try to wear them into the park, even at night.

Evening, all!

I’m looking forward to lunch with Rhi and Sirius tomorrow, yay! I know we’ll be talking more about conference and wishing Sirius and the rest of our Leaky friends were going. Where has MM been? She hasn’t posted for days and days. I’m eager to see if she went ahead and registered, at least for a day pass or two.

LH you’re positively right about the robes being WAY too hot to wear outdoors at all! I definitely won’t. Those are for inside ONLY. The DS says he’s going to don his Hagrid costume. If I pack it, he better, but I just don’t know if he will be able to tolerate it in that weather, even inside.

Costumes are not allowed in the park, technically, except for our LeakyCon night event, so no one will really be wearing them there. A blind eye is turned a bit to that issue, because of course HP fans love to dress up if they’re able, LOL, but there’s an issue with someone looking too much like an actual character and therefore being perceived as a universal employee, which could be dangerous for kids. So they’ve said we can “legally” for our park event, but that’s it. However, robes and anything dangly would not be allowed on the rides anyway, so even if it were cool enough, I would skip it at the park.

I was just reading about another conference taking place there in 2012. It’s awfully tempting to plan to go back, LOL, although it’s not Leaky. It’s by the same people who did Infinitus and some of the other ones. It’s a LOT more expensive (especially their version of the RockStar pass) for less days, and I wouldn’t want to go without at least a couple Leaky people, but it’s in the back of my mind. One sure way to stave off post-conference depression is to have another one in the works! I wish. :)

COOLG, I think there may be one of those in Pigeon Forge, TN. MM has a photo of her standing in front of a building that looks like part of the fractured hull of the Titanic over at CC. Since it is in Pigeon Forge I have aways viewed it more as a tourist trap rather than a real museum. Branson, MO and Pigeon Forge, TN are so similar it is probably the same thing.

This a regular shopping day with my mother and a combination doctor’s appointment for the two of them. He is kind enough to see them both in the same room at the same appointment. It is too bad my MIL wouldn’t like to join them. We could kill three birds with one stone.

I should probably mention this so it won’t surprise anyone. I don’t think I am going to purchase any additional time at Universal parks. I’ve been looking at the rides there and the greater majority appear to be roller coaster type rides with all sorts of health condition warnings about neck and back problems, use of fake smoke, strobe lights, high blood pressure type stuff. I’m afraid that between my daughter and I we would get in there and do nothing.

So, I think I am going to take her to Sea World on the last Sunday instead. She is so wild about animals and she has never been to anything like that. I know they have rides there as well that we won’t ride but she will love seeing the dolphins and whales.

So, keep that in mind anyone who might not care about spending as much time in Universal.

There were more tornadoes last night in Oklahoma, forty of them, and more people dead, but not miles and miles of absolute destruction. What happened last night in Oklahoma is more the rule than what happened in Missouri on Sunday or in Alabama a few weeks ago.

Tonight is our night from about 9 PM until Midnight. After what has happened the last few days and weeks it is making me a bit nervous. Tornadoes generally caused isolated, if devastating, damage. These recent tornadoes have not been isolated. These have been miles of total destruction. That sort of damage does happen from time to time but it seems as if most of these outbreaks recently have caused cataclysmic damage. If you have seen the photos of what has happened there has been no hiding from these things. Everything has been obliterated, right to the ground. It makes the idea of hiding in the bathroom seem preposterous but we have nowhere else to go.

Aloha! ;)

Lady Hawke Judging by the photos, even if you went to a community shelter, there is no guarantee that you would be any less likely to be in danger. I think I would opt to stay home, too.

You would pretty much have to go to the shelter at the start of the watch and stay until after an all clear was sounded. I don’t know if they would let you do that, unless you were volunteering to assist others who might have bbeen caught.

Just make sure your most important papers are someplace where you can grab them easily. Great advice! Too bad I haven’t taken it. ;)

Off to try and be productive. ;)

I just looked at the average monthly highs in Orlando, Memphis, and Seattle.

Memphis is hotter than Orlando. We have the same average high in July in both Memphis and Orlando but Memphis has had a record high of 108 degrees and Orlando has only 101 as a record high.

Seattle doesn’t even come into the competition. The average high in July is 73 degrees. No wonder you were dying in Orlando. The record high temperature for Seattle is 96.

This is a bit reassuring to me. I have become paranoid after all the talk of how hot it is in Orlando and I know I have participated in it. It makes me feel better to realize it is no worse there than here. I can do this.

Some of those tornados were f-4 to f-5 monsters. At that level of strength there is actually no above ground place to go that guarantees survival. Unless you have a cave to run into you are vulnerable. F-5s have been known to lift a home’s entire concrete foundation slab and toss it like a toy. Two foot thick sections of asphalt highways get stripped right off the ground. Even a basement is no help against such power. Fortunately, twisters of that strength are rare and usually don’t last for very long when they do form.

We are looking into getting an above ground storm safe room in the house in Oklahoma, when we build. They have to meet criteria set by Texas Tech (I think) for storm safety testing. A true monster storm might be able to destroy one of those, but anything less powerful could not harm it or the occupants.. ;)

Lunch lurk. ;)

Afternoon all!

We finally have a pretty nice day here, and the forecast has gone from showing rain for every single day of the next ten to sunny and warm for all but Sunday. I’ve got my fingers crossed that that one will change too, since we’re supposed to be having a cookout for my nephew’s 4th birthday.

Lemon, you are so much more organized than I am; I really haven’t done any planning for the trip! LH had just been asking about what I was wearing for the ball, and I realized that I haven’t tried on what I’d been picturing wearing (the same one from LC09 but in black) for over a year, so it may not even fit anymore. I haven’t given any thought to the every day clothes either. I will, of course, bring my robe, but as you guys have said, I definitely wouldn’t be wearing it outside or to the park. I know that last time I also got too hot to wear it at the Wrock shows, but I’m guessing that the venues for those will be air conditioned, unlike the castle in Boston, so maybe I’ll be okay there. I suppose I’ll play it by ear – a benefit of staying right at the conference hotel is that I can just run the robe back up to the room if I find I’m not wearing it and don’t feel like carrying it. For regular clothes, I’ll probably have a mix of t-shirts (mostly HP & Threadless ones) and tank tops.

Lemon, I’ve thought about the HPEF conference too (Ascendio, I think it is?) but I’ve read such a mix of opinions about their stuff. It seems like most people agree that the best part is always just seeing everyone – I’ve heard that a lot of people don’t even attend any of the conference-sponsered programming, but just use it as a focal point for getting together with friends. Seems like a waste of money to spend that much money on a conference when you’re not actually doing anything that the conference is putting on, but I suppose maybe it makes it slightly easier to plan to already have a time and place for people to converge, rather than trying to organize a meet-up on your own. So anyway, I’m hesitant, but would certainly consider it if I knew others were going to be there. I would also have to weigh the decision against upcoming ALA conferences, since I know that as much as I’d love to, I can’t fit them all in financially. I’m sad to be missing the one next month in New Orleans, but LeakyCon definitely comes first! The next one is the smaller January Midwinter Meeting in Dallas. I think I’ll probably have to skip that one too. But next summer’s big annual conference is in Anaheim, CA so I’m hoping to do that one. And in 2013, the January one is in Seattle, the June one in Chicago, so obviously those would both be really amazing to be able to meet-up with you and MM. So, I will just have to wait and see.

I’ve got to run; I’m going to be grabbing sandwiches and heading down by the water with my dad and sister. But I’ll be back this evening! :)

Good evening!

This is the first chance I’ve had to post, though I have been reading. This week is turning out to be very busy! Fortunately in a good way.

Yesterday I met the DS for an early meal, then went to see The Penguin Cafe Orchestra. And wow, were they good. We had a fab night. Ironsos, I’ll post about it in more detail when I can, but for now, I really really enjoyed the concert. I would highly recommend them. It was a terrific evening.

I am really looking forward to tomorrow as well. We are off to The Chelsea Flower Show. It’s going to be a long day…..we leave here at 7.30, and won’t be home ‘til about 9.30, but it should be amazing. There have been programmes on TV every day from Chelsea, but unfortunately I havn’t been able to see any of them; it would have been good to see a bit in advance, but never mind! There are going to be thousands of people there, I just hope we get to see everything.

I’m also trying to co ordinate everyone for this coming weekend. I now have 5 whole days off work, and while relaxing doen’t seem much of an option, with the amount we have planned, I’m going to enjoy every minute of them!

Ooops, sister on the phone!

OK, I’m back. I wanted to try and catch up quickly, at least on this page.

Your weather is really worrying me again. I can’t believe how bad it is this year. I just pray pray pray that all of you in the danger areas stay safe.

CoolG, it’s good to hear about Mistic. Is she enjoying her new job?

Jen, after weeks and weeks of if not good, at least pleasant weather, we have rain forecast for our day out tomorrow! I don’t think it’s rained here, at least in any great vomlume, for at least 6 weeks. It’s typical! We’ll both hope for good weather on Sunday then, for your nephew’s cookout, and my picnic!

Lemon, I’ll look farward to hearing about your lunch with Rhiannon and Sirius. I hope you all have a lovely time.

Graymayne, I’m glad you enjoyed Ursula, Under. I thought the amount of research and attention to detail was terrific, and she’d obviously thought out in great detail all the branches of Ursula’s family tree. I learned a lot from it too. Lady Hawke, I think you’d enjoy it. It’s by Ingrid Hill.

Hi all!

Busy week so far. Monday was our inspection and everything went very well, so a lot of pressure has been lifted. Now we are tackling some other pending tasks at work, but nothing as big as the inspection, so it’s a whole ’nother ball game now (for the better).

I saw the LeakyCon update and I’m just thinking… CAN’T YOU JUST RELEASE THE DARN SCHEDULE ALREADY?! ;-P

I don’t have any costumes or robes. Robes at the park are like $100 and I never really wanted them so bad to spend that kind of money on them. I have a Hufflepuff lanyard, but that’s not a good enough costume Maybe I’ll get a Hufflepuff tie and wear that with a white shirt and nice pants, like a Hogwarts uniform type of thing. I do have several wands too, so maybe I’ll take one of those as well.

Another thing that worried me was the tidbit about the tickets for the midnight screening, saying that they won’t post it to the general public and you must be registered to even know about it. Does that mean we’ll get an e-mail? Are we supposed to be checking the LeakyCon page constantly? What the heck are we supposed to do??? If you guys hear anything, pretty, pretty please post it on our Facebook page so I’ll get an e-mail on my phone and know right away :-)

Afternoon, all! I’m back from lunch with Rhi and Sirius who said to say hi to everyone. We had a great time, as usual, and it was extra nice to see Sirius again, too. Rhi and I tried to contain our SQUEEEING over LeakyCon as much as possible, but some escaped, LOL. How could we help it, right? We are both anxious for the programming to be announced and for the tickets to the midnight release to go on sale.

Felipe I am assuming we will receive an email about the movie tix, probably RockStars first. I’m hoping that they will allow us to buy all our movie tickets for our party at once instead of each individual person having to buy one apiece, it was such a pain to have to do the park night ones one at a time for five people!

LH I LOVE Sea World! Little Hawke will adore it, has she ever been there before? We used to go all the time, living in CA. The kids were pretty bored at that stage, except for LemonDrop who was older, because they were stuck in strollers sitting around all day, but they would love it now. I debated going while in Florida, too, especially when I was still in la-la-land over finances and thinking we could spend a lot more time there than we are, but it just didn’t work out. I totally understand your desire to go somewhere both of you are sure to enjoy rather than poking around a park where you won’t want to do 80% of what they have to offer. It does suck, though, that our time together will be cut shorter since we’ll be at different places. :( We’ll have to take full advantage of the time during the actual conference, although I know we’ll be going over to the park on some evenings then, too. But on Monday and Tuesday, we’re definitely going to be in the Universal parks from the time LeakyCon ends Sunday to the time our car comes to get us on Monday in order to get our time and money’s worth out of those parks.

Keep in mind, too, that the regular Universal park (not Islands of Adventure) has a lot more shows and non-rollercoastery rides, so you might still be interested in that one.

I’m glad to know you will be able to tolerate the heat, LOL, though I wish I could, too! I’ve been dreading it ever since I got back last summer. Hopefully being a little thinner and in better shape will help enough to at least keep me from getting sick. Heat does make me very ill, especially that kind of heat. I was in complete pain and misery, totally headachy and nauseous, by the time we got back to the car last year and that was after only a few hours. Now I’m facing WEEKS. Shudder

I cannot really conceive of the extent of damage and violence of these recent storms. It’s frightening and horrifying to hear the news reports. Stay safe, everyone who is in the current path of these monsters!

The weather has been very odd here, actually, though not like that. We had thunder all night long last night, which we almost never have. In WI we were accustomed to it and didn’t think much about it other than to appreciate it. I love storms, normally, but here, because it’s so rare, it was actually a little unsettling. Now it’s pouring. Half of me is very glad that we haven’t crept into the heat yet, but the other half is pretty sick of rain and cold. I know that half will regret that statement when we’re in Florida and will be whimpering for home, LOL.

Jen organization is sort of a necessary compulsion when traveling with five people, three of which are children, LOL. I can’t help it. And even though I’ve been planning and organizing for almost a full year, I still feel like there’s so much left to do that I don’t know how we’ll get it all done in 47 days. I am starting to panic! It was so much easier last time when it was just me going. I still planned stuff, but it was nothing like this. This has been like staging a military campaign, LOL.

I’m VERY happy that most of my HP shirts will fit perfectly by conference, that’s going to save me SO much money! I was worried I’d have to go waste a bunch on clothes just for the trip, which would turn around and be too big before much longer, but now it’s perfect. HP garb that is essentially brand new, even though most of it’s several years old, and a few extra pairs of my workout capris and I’ll be set, at least for the LeakyCon portion. That also makes me feel a little better about the amount of money I blew on my ball gown, LOL. Which, excitingly for me, I just found out I will get to wear at least once more because my local writer’s conference is having a masquerade ball this year, on my recommendation! So that also made me feel better about that expense! It has a lace-up back, so even though I will keep shrinking, it should still fit or be able to be altered to still fit by then.

Definitely staying at the hotel is a benefit for quick changes and running hot robes to rooms! That’s what I’m figuring, too. As long as it is A/C’d, though, I’ll probably leave mine on no matter what. For the sake of wearing costumes, I’m willing and able to tolerate the heat a bit more, at least indoors. There’s something about that burning sun glaring down on me that increases the perception of heat, even if the temperature is the same as it is indoors.

Oh, Jen, I wonder if the summer MLA conference is during the same time as the RWA Nationals one? Maybe they’re coordinating? That would be SO cool, because I’ll be there, too, and it’s also in Anaheim and we could hook up on this coast for once! And of course when you come out to the one in Seattle. Yay, something else to look forward to! I agree about the other conference in FL. I’d think about it, though, if we could make it work and not be too $$$. Not the family, though. That one would be just me going out. Cheaper, easier, quicker, LOL.

Asti have lots of fun, I’m glad you had such a good day!

CoolG that’s too bad about Mistic working so much after she “retired.” Is she minding it?

Well, since I spent the morning getting ready and then at lunch and now have been on the computer for a while, I still have to go get the exercise in. Have a good afternoon, everyone!
