New Magical Creature Contest

style=”text-align: left; font-family: Arial;”>Apparently Hagrid still hasn’t gotten the message. The
1965 Ban on Experimental Breeding remains in effect but he’s at it
again. How does he get away with it? Possibly he has a friend at the
Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures that
keeps the law off his doorstep. Maybe he’s taken a page out of Mr.
Weasley’s book and found a loophole in the statute. Regardless, there
is a newly created (illegal?) beast on the grounds of Hogwarts under
Hagrid’s care. But the real question for you is what is it (and will it
be tamable)?

What do you suppose are two likely creatures that
Hagrid has paired and what have they produced? Tell us about it in 100
words or less. Provide a description of the new creature and tell us
what magical abilities it possesses. For the purposes of this contest
Hagrid has access to only those magical beasts mentioned in the seven
Harry Potter books and the two charity books, ˜Fantastic Beasts and
Where to Find Them’ and ˜Quidditch Through the Ages.’ You may choose to
cross-breed two magical creatures or a magical creature with a
non-magical creature as long as the non-magical creature was also
mentioned in one of the seven Harry Potter books or a charity book.
Also, please do not use centaurs, merpeople, or werewolves because
these, like goblins and house-elves, are considered beings rather than
beasts.

First Place – WeenyOwl

(excerpt from Headmistress McGonagall’s private journal)

I fear Horace’s pursuit of rare potions ingredients is luring Hagrid
back to his old hybridizing experiments. Their recent mead-fueled debate
on the magical properties of pufferfish eyes and the correct
pronunciation of ˜bowtruckle’ may explain the Lake’s proliferation of
hitherto-unknown wooden fish. When disturbed, these creatures, which
Hagrid calls Bowless Rafterfish, swell up until they resemble log rafts.
On hot days, students use them as floats and diving platforms ’ until
they suddenly revert to their original form, occasioning much hilarity.
At first I worried about potential drownings, but the Giant Squid
faithfully retrieves all who drift too far out.

Second Place – Sluggish Memory

Pnixome (PIX-O-MEE)

The Pnixome, a breed produced from the Pixie and the Gnome has caused an
outbreak of damaged crops throughout the Wizarding World. The creature
who is partial to the Muggle drink, Pina Coladas and who especially
enjoys getting caught in the rain is known to be a mischievous and sassy
beast. It’s unattractive, portly thighs along with its oversized wings
are incapable of masking its raw, repugnant stench which smells robustly
of Gnome saliva and the underarm of a baby Pixie. A single expelling of
gas from the Pnixome has the ability to devastate any plant.

Third Place – ogdensnut

Creature: the Nab

Hoping to create the world’s best defended treasure-hunter, Hagrid has
interbred the treasure-seeking Niffler with the jewel-shelled,
flame-shooting Fire Crab to create the ˜Nab’. Unfortunately, the shaggy
black Nab, sensing treasure, simply steals the jewels from its own
shell. This triggers its flame defence (burning a bald patch around its
rear end) and leaves large holes. When exhaustion finally drives the Nab
underground, soil falls through these holes. Hagrid, who is
nevertheless delighted, has been experimenting with filling these holes
and protecting the remaining jewels by smothering the entire hairy shell
with his own melted treacle and letting it set.

Honorable Mention – B.L. Gooby

A Grindeazle is a small, fur-less and catlike creature. It is the result
of breeding a Kneazle and a Grindylow. The Grindeazle is pale green
with large, dark green spots. It has webbed toes and a fin on the end of
its lion-like tail. It has gills and is able to breathe above and below
the water. It likes to live in secluded marshes. It eats small animals
and insects. It is very illusive, but aggressive when found. An elixir
made with its saliva is known to prevent and cure the effects of Cholera

Honorable Mention – halfbloodprincess219

Firepuff
As his previous encounter with Blast-Endded-Skrewts caused a complete
mess, he decided to cross his leftover supply of Firecrabs with the cute
Pigmypuff to create a gentler (but still Hagrid approved) creature.
When calm, a Firepuff walks on six legs, is covered in peach colored fur
and occasionally releases a puff of smoke from its bottom. But when it
senses the slightest danger it rolls into a hard ball covered in spiky
gems, and propells itself around with large blasts of fire coming from
several holes. Luna Lovegood describes them as cute, angry armidillos.
