Writing with Quills

Supplies

Long feathers
Utility knife
Parchment paper
India ink
Aprons or old t-shirts for older kids

Preparation (Before the Party)

Give the end of the quills an angled point using the utility knife.

Animation

Have the kids write on the parchment using the quills and india ink. India ink stains, so make sure the kids are aware and being careful. Younger kids may need aprons or old t-shirts to protect their clothing.

Discuss the place of quills in history (before ball-point pens) and what it means to “blot” your paper, a phrase seen in the Harry Potter books.
