The Next Doctor Auditions, part three

Candidate number three for the role of Doctor is… Sean Pertwee, son of former Doctor Jon Pertwee.

Sean Pertwee

Sean Pertwee has a long list of credits over on IMDB spanning the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s, although again – nothing that would make him all that well-known to the Americans like me. (He did have a bit part in 1993’s “Swing Kids”, and a much larger role in 97’s “Event Horizon”.) But it’s an impressive resume regardless, and he’s got a kind of Christopher Eccleston meets Daniel Craig charm about him.

A possible plus – he went on record about a year ago as saying he’d like to play the Doctor as his father did. Den of Geek wrote up a fun article looking at the odds each candidate’s got of actually becoming the Doctor, and they put the younger Pertwee at about 18 to 1 odds. Of course, they’ve got Alex Kingston, Billie Piper and Catherine Tate on the odds-making list, so I think you can count that as a “just for fun” article. I’m not saying a woman couldn’t be the Doctor (although again, I’ll say I doubt it will happen)… however, I’m much more sure that whoever that woman is won’t be one who’s been important to the series already.

Anyway, back on topic. I like Sean Pertwee as a candidate, a lot, and not just because of the sentimentality of his father having been the Third Doctor. I do think he’s made some unfortunate choices in film roles (as pointed out by Den of Geek), but he seems to be a good, solid actor with rugged good looks who could be different enough to thrive as the guy who has to follow in the footsteps of David Tennant – no short order for any actor. So far, he’s my favorite of those on the short list, with Paterson Joseph a close second.
