A Patronus for 2011 - Let's Get It!

January 03, 2011, 12:58 AM

You know, it isn’t often I have a year like 2010.  It was a year in which I truly took responsibility for myself.  Sure, my parents bailed me out a couple times, I’m not saying I didn’t need help, but I clothed and fed myself, paid my bills, found work, and braved a new city on my own.  In a lot of ways, 2010 was the first true year of my adulthood and I’m left with this feeling of pride that’s carrying me into 2011.  It’s got me excited about the next 12 months...

Draco: the Bully and the Bullied

October 08, 2010, 02:03 AM

You know that scene in the Goblet of Fire movie when Lucius is taunting the Weasleys at the Quidditch World Cup and Draco tries to join in, but his father sticks his cane right in his stomach?  I must have seen that movie at least sixty times, but that part always makes me flinch.  Now, here’s a character who likes to refer to Hermione as a “Mudblood,” never misses an opportunity to remind Ron of how poor his family is, and tries to serve Harry Potter up...

We Are All Shirtless Now

August 01, 2010, 12:11 PM

Yes, well, it’s been a long time, hasn’t it?  I’m not really going to get into the reasons why, except to say that I guess I wasn’t really prepared for some of the demands of being a transgendered person in a big city like this.  I began my transition in a small, cozy little gay town, and though that time was definitely not without incident, there was always somewhere I could go, some queers I could see, to make me feel normal again, and I don’t really have that here yet,...

Mudblood, and Proud of It

February 20, 2010, 10:38 PM

First off, I took that walk down to see the Hand, Foot, and Wand prints and I wanted to share the picture I snapped.  A note to anyone going to visit, the trio’s prints are front and center.  I wandered around thinking the newer ones would be on the edges, but they really had a place of honor!  Anyway, it was really cool, definitely worth a stop if you’re coming to LA. --WARNING:  The following blog, including its comments section, contains some strong language (slurs).  As...

I'm Not Wearing That, It's Ghastly!

February 01, 2010, 08:56 AM

Hello, again.  I write to you from Los Angeles, where I have been living since Thursday!  California is magnificent.  I will be job-hunting this week, but as a treat for myself, I think I will take a walk down to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre to see the trio’s Hand, Foot, and Wand prints.  Harry Potter always grounds me whenever the world becomes a bit overwhelming and scary.  Of course, this move and this city have been that at times, but the fact is I’ve chosen this...

You've Got to Admit, Dan's Got Style

December 30, 2009, 01:53 PM

Hello, everyone.  I apologize for the blog being down for so long.  There has been a lot going on, but one of the main reasons for the lack of updates is that I finally came out to my father a couple months ago.  I don't have much to say on that topic yet.  In a lot of ways, I'm only beginning to digest everything that's happened recently.  I will say one thing:  being 100% out of the closet feels every bit as good as everyone said, and no matter what happens, I...

Gushing Blood...Half-Blood

July 26, 2009, 08:32 PM

When I first began to write this article, I was determined to get my opinion down before it could be tainted – for better or for worse – by the influence of friends and the media alike (especially that Rotten Tomatoes meter).  It’s not that I have no backbone about my opinion; it’s just that, given enough time, I could come up with a million reasons and nitpicks to hate every one of the films.  At the same time, I could think about all the good things, all the things I loved,...

99 Reasons to Love Hermione

July 07, 2009, 05:09 AM

In 1965, Mel Brooks’ hilarious send-up of the spy genre, Get Smart, debuted.  The show centered on not-so-secret secret agent Maxwell Smart, played by funny man Don Adams, and his partner Agent 99, equal parts beautiful and clever, played by the über-cool Barbara Feldon.  Agent 99 was the new modern image of women:  she had the looks and the style, but more importantly, she was a woman who was successful in her career and yet, amidst all the butt-kicking and karate-chops-in-the-back,...

Y Tu Mama Tambien 2: Prisoner of Azkaban

June 08, 2009, 01:55 PM

When Brokeback Mountain first graced the big screen, I read a review of the movie that described the initial attraction between Ennis and Jack as inevitable.  Two young attractive men, alone for the season on a secluded mountain?  Yeah, I’d believe it inevitable.  So what about two young teen wizards holed up in boarding school for six years?  Well, I can see that too.  And, apparently, so can a lot of other people.  It’s Frodo and Sam all over again.  The...

Harry and Harvey: Walking the Forest

May 02, 2009, 03:18 PM

I don’t talk politics much.  I don’t read the paper - I don’t really trust the paper.  I have a few friends who are politically aware and I trust them to keep me apprised of anything major.  Several weeks ago I was visiting with one such politically-minded friend and we got on the subject of the Gay Rights Movement.  Thanks mostly to 365Gay News on Logo, this was one political conversation in which I could really contribute, so we got really into it.  I told him...

Through the Brick Wall...and Back Again

April 05, 2009, 11:37 AM

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine told me about a concept album the band Of Montreal put out called “Skeletal Lamping,” which featured a character, the lead singer’s alter ego, called Georgie Fruit.  Georgie is a person who has been through multiple sex changes, from man to woman and back again many times.  Predictably, my employer walked by and said that she couldn’t understand that at all.  To her, “it’s like make up your mind already!” she said.  It would...

The Story of Jon, Jo, and AJ

March 11, 2009, 03:41 PM

A few years ago, if you had asked me about the day I met J.K. Rowling, I probably would have mumbled something about how I told heard I liked to read just like Hermione and how much I loved this story.  But that bit of history would have been slightly revisionist.  I did say those things, but as I have finally grown up enough that I understand that the past is often embarrassing, especially when you’re talking teenaged years, but it happened, and that’s what makes it so hilarious. ...

Life in the Cupboard

February 17, 2009, 04:26 PM

Not too long ago, I came out to my mother.  I think when we take on something like that, something that seems so enormously significant, it never really plays out exactly as we’d imagine.  Maybe it’s just me, because I do lead an active fantasy life, always dreaming about what could or might happen, but when faced with reality, I’m never as articulate as I’d like to be.  My voice becomes shaky and I forget everything I wanted to say.  But then something even better...

Transchildren: Under the Sorting Hat

January 24, 2009, 03:08 PM

"I sometimes think we sort too soon." -Albus Dumbledore, “The Prince’s Tale,” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows   Me, too, Dumbledore, me, too.   The other day at work a customer called me "sir" then "ma'am" then, frustrated, threw his hands up in the air and said "I don't know which." I turned beet red and said nothing; not my usual tack, but I was surprised; most customers just ask my name and figure it out.  Why did this guy even have to say "sir" or "ma'am"? ...
