Gary Oldman is regarded as one of the most versatile actors working in films today. Known for his intense and diverse portrayals in both motion picture and on stage, Gary received wide critical praise for his performance as Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where he was also nominated for a Saturn Award for "Best Supporting Actor." Beginning his career in 1979, Gary quickly gained notoriety and respect for his appearance in films such as Tom Stoppard's Shakespeare twister, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, and as strung out punk rocker Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols) in the motion picture Sid and Nancy. In 1987 he won the "Best Actor of the Year" award from the London Critics Circle for his performance in Prick Up Your Ears. As a director, critics also praised his semi-autobiographical film Nil by Mouth, which won the BAFTAaward for "Best British Film", and "Best Screenplay". Gary has also been widely acclaimed for several recent notable roles, including Lee Harvey Oswald in Oliver Stone's JFK, and in The Contender where he was nominated as "Best Supporting Actor" by the Screen Actor's Guild for his performance as Rep Sheldon B. Runyon. He was also nominated for an Emmy Award in 2001 for his guest star appearance on the hit television series Friends. Gary returned to the Harry Potter series as Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In addition to acting, Gary is also an accomplished musician.
