Certainly the most complex character that Rowling created, also perhaps the most flawed in character and therefore most the human as far as I am concerned.

It is truly a shame that more about Snape will never be known…from childhood, meeting Lily Evans, to the parting of the ways at Hogwarts with his placement in Slytherin, the brilliance of his mind coupled with his unfulfilled desire naturally took him towards his darker nature and there Voldemort had him in his clutches.

Never truly understand his Character

of all the Characters in the Potter books, he is one that I would truly liked to have known more about

I wonder if the day of someone’s birthday has some significance be hind it. I mean, was there a reason why JKR picked a certain day, out of all 365 in the year, to be someone’s birthday?

@spelljinxcursehexcharm, I think JKR has a considerable interest in astrology, and chose dates that would suit the characters’ temperaments. Severus certainly suits the traditional idea of a sun-Capricorn type. I don’t know how significant this is, but he shares his birthday with both the notoriously devious late ex-president Richard Nixon (‘Tricky Dicky’) and the great folk-singer Joan Baez (who has one of the most beautiful voices of our time and a distinctly Snape-ish nose)! It would be fun to know whether JKR had this sort of thing in mind when she gave the characters their birthdays.

Not sure if the last comment made a lot of sense. I was thinking of Joan Baez’s amazing voice as like the beautiful patronus…
