Man Jailed Over Theft of First Edition Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

BBC News today reports the sentencing of Kevin McGirr, a 40-year-old man who pleaded guilty to charges of stealing a rare first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. McGirr took the book--worth approximately £6,000 or about $9,800 US--from the Creative Art Gallery in Woodstock, Oxfordshire back in October. The book was found "wrapped in a plastic bag outside a Boots store in Abingdon on 15 November".

Ordered at Banbury Magistrates' Court to pay both £250 compensation and £400 in legal costs, Kevin McGirr has been jailed for six weeks. Read the full article at this link on the BBC News website.

Why was the book found in front of a Boots store? Why would he leave it there where anything could have happened to it!

@AbbyWeasley: They are 1,000 first editions, (British editions..not American!) out there…I don’t see why JKR should have them ALL…haaha ^_
And I really would want that…Not stealing it like @cloethebelatrixlover said…But, sight, wouldn’t it be awesome ;{

he stole one of the most famous books in this century and will only be in jail for 6 weeks? thats ridicules, i think he needs to have a life sentence in azkaban.

I live in the US, but I have a paper-back copy of the British version. I love it!!
I can’t believe that guy stole it though…..tsk, tsk!!!!

@emmawatsonfan13— I have a British copy too, though i live in the US. i like the font, and Mary GrandPre’s illustrations better, though…But there’s something ..for-want-of-a-better-word, magical, about the British, especially Book One’s cover art, and the simplicity of the font, chapter headings, etc.

I wonder if it as one of the 500 actual first editions that went to libraries throughout the UK or if it was one of the 1000 second printings of the first edition. It would definately affect the value
