There are now only 98 days left until "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I" hits theaters! (And today,
we know where the films will be split!) We are posting a quote from the first half of the book every day in celebration and to give us a chance to discuss and ponder the final book as it goes to film. Here's today's quote!
"Had the old fool imagined that marble or death would protect the wand? Had he thought that the Dark Lord would be scared to violate his tomb? The spiderlike hand swooped and pulled the wand from Dumbledore's grasp, and as he took it, a shower of sparks flew from its tip, sparkling over the corpse of its last owner, ready to serve a new master at last."

Usually I hate it when the filmmakers add things that aren’t in the books (especially since they take so much out). But in this case, I kind of like the idea of Voldy casting a lightning bolt as the first thing he does with the Elder Wand. Not only does it demonstrate its power, but it also symbolically harks back to the scar behind which, in a way, lurks his doom. I think I read somewhere JKR saying that she had no particular metaphoric reason for picking a lightning-bolt shape for Harry’s scar – just that she thought it would look kind of cool and unique. But here the director of the movie finds a way to add a layer of symbolic connection that wasn’t there before, without watering down the author’s intent. Plus, visually it would be a nice way to bookend the film, since the opening credits title logo with the lightning bolt coming down from the name Harry Potter is sometimes rendered like it’s materializing out of a stormy night sky. They could fade out Voldy’s lightning stroke into the same swirling clouds. As they say in the movie biz, ’That’s a wrap!’
tomorrow is 97!
