Mayor of London Wants Potter Fans to Lobby for London Theme Park

Yesterday, Mayor of London Boris Johnson wrote a column in the Daily Telegraph's Comment section about The Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction. Johnson was highly critical of the location of the theme park, asserting that whilst he has "nothing against Orlando," he "bitterly [resents] that Orlando is about to become the official place of pilgrimage for every Harry Potter fan on earth."

Voicing his frustration, the Mayor continues, "sometimes [the British] just don't seem to have the gumption to exploit our intellectual property." Johnson acknowledges that all behind The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will "do a magnificent job" but remains disillusioned by the prospect:

I know somewhere that's even better than Orlando at looking like London – and that is London. I want to know why this Kingdom of Potter is not being built in the UK, and I won't be fobbed off with any nonsense about the weather. They built Eurodisney in the Valley of the Marne, where it is at least as cold and drizzly as it is in London – and it has been a triumphant success.
Johnson goes on to talk about the longevity of the Harry Potter series, commenting that he has listened to his children "babble about the detail, the clues and suggestions that become ever richer with re-reading, the emotions evoked and the deep satisfaction that these books evidently give."

The Mayor ends with an appeal to  children and parents to write to Warner Bros., Universal and J.K. Rowling to "[bring] Harry home to Britain." You can read the article in its entirety via this link.

Boris Johnson sounds like a blubbering idiot. “intellectual property” ? Are you kidding me? Because the writer is from the UK and its set in the UK, it makes it their “property”? Seriously, dude, your making yourself look incredibly idiotic. I hate to put it this way (like you own them) but, you have the writer, the setting of the books, the studios, the actors, the directors, the props, and the world wide attention…and you want to whine about this piece that Orlando made for themselves? NEWSFLASH Warner Brothers is an AMERICAN company. Further more, that AMERICAN company (along with the fricken writer of the books) can decide where to put a theme park. Sorry to be blunt, but screw you and your “intellectual property”.

Fine — no problem. But our park will be better than his.

I understand how he feels! So….they should make another park in England! :D Just like there are Disney parks all over the world.

I meant they “definitely” should. I know the article was hinting at it already. :)

I agree that it should have been built in britain, i would find it far more accessible. however, the very idea of BORIS JOHNSON caring about harry potter? it’s unbelievable. finally the mayor of london is showing Some common sense (not much, but it is a start)

He wants Harry Potter fans to lobby because he wants the tourism dollars, not because he truly believes that Harry Potter is Britain’s “intellectual property.” And it’s not Britain’s intellectual property, anyways. It’s JK Rowling’s. After that, it doesn’t immediately go to Britain. The most watched movie in the world, The Wizard of Oz, isn’t the intellectual property of Kansas. It’s watched and studied by the entire world. The same goes for Harry Potter.

Sorry Mayor Johnson, that’s bull.

“He wants Harry Potter fans to lobby because he wants the tourism dollars,”

but of course! The same reason they want it in US.
I do agree with him, however perhaps instead of using “intellectual property” he should have said “national treasure”. It really deserves to be here in my opinion. At least as well as.

Of course it would be brilliant for the theme park to be in London or anywhere in England instead, but he’s a tad bit too late…

Ok.Hold on!In London, they have all of the filming sites and stuff, so we should be able to have a theme park!

But it would have been pretty cool if it were built in London.

My theory: He is just mad because now his kids want to visit the park and he doesn’t want to go to Florida.

There is a pretty simple reason it was built where it was. Universal Studios only has 2 theme park locations that I know of, Florida and California. The Florida one is more centrally located for Europeans to come to so that was the one they chose. If Universal had a theme park already in England that would have been one thing, but they don’t as far as I know. Second does anybody know if Warner Brothers actually paid part of the costs to build the attraction or did Universal Studios pay for it all? I’m guessing Universal paid the majority of the costs to build it and is actually paying WB and JK to use the HP theme. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been to London and hit all the real locations and nothing on earth will compare to that, but this is a fantasy location and really could have been built to whoever was the highest bidder.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if they will be selling U-No-Poo at the park?

Rather interesting that he should be complaining now. Perhaps he did not hold office at the time of the park’s inseption. It is a bit late to complain now – arguments should have been presented to Warner Brothers during planning not at the opening.

Yes, there should be something in England as well. And as others have stated when the studio opens the sets to Harry Potter fans it will draw lots of people.

Perhaps he should work with the studio to work out a map of shooting scenes so travelers can move about the entire country not just London. Like the map sellers in LA with their maps of stars houses. :)
