Empire Online has named Dobby as one of their eight "Most Downtrodden (Yet Inspiring) Characters in Movie History." Wall-E, Spartacus and Napoleon Dynamite were amongst the other "luckless individuals who at least make our lives better." The feature provides a background on both why Dobby is so miserable and so inspiring. Quotage:
Dobby continues to play a heroic role throughout the series, always putting the welfare of others before his own, and plays a role out of all proportion to his size.
The full feature can be found on the Empire Online website

Thanks very much to Gazza for the tip!
Dobby clearly qualifies as one of the eight most downtrodden yet inspiring characters in book history. But for movies? Unfortunately, in the movies, Dobby doesn’t continue to play a heroic role, or any role, throughout the series (though he will reappear in the last movie).
Happy Dobby is getting the notice – wish the movie makers had understood his importance enough to show it.

Dobby was a great elf and sacrifice himself for the good of others. If any character was to win award, it was Dobby. He loved Harry very much, not only for setting him free but for the choices his living gave others. He was a great asset to the films and it was a sad note when they cut him out of GOF. Rest in peace Dobby…you are loved by many!
