Here is a bit of good news now to brighten up the day: the part of Mrs. Granger (the mother of Hermione) has been cast for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The Coleraine Times reports that Michelle Fairley has been cast "to play the part of Mrs Granger, a Muggle dentist and the mother of Hermione Granger, one of Harry's two best friends, played by Emma Watson." Michelle Fairley says of the part: "It's not a very large part, maybe three or four scenes which will take just a few days filming. But it's very nice indeed for me." Editor's Note: Readers will recall that in Deathly Hallows, Hermione, in order to save her parents from the Death Eaters, modified the memories of her parents, gave them new names, and sent them off to Australia.

The actress, who is currently doing stage work in England, goes on to describe some early hurdles she had to overcome to get the part. Quotage: "They wanted to do shooting for the film on the press day for the play I'm in at the Old Vic which meant me being in the theatre all day. So, initially I couldn't do it.
"So it looked as if the part was gone until the director came back and said that he wanted me for the part. They have now arranged new dates for the shooting which will take a couple of days.

"I'm delighted as I've a lot of friends and family and their children who all love Harry Potter, so it's lovely to be involved.
"I've never seen any of the Harry Potter movies or read any of the books," admitted Michelle, who now plans to watch the films and read the books in preparation for her part.

Filming is underway on both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with Part One due November of 2010, and Part Two due July, 2011.

This is rather interesting… I sincerely thought we’d get through all the films without ever meeting Hermione’s parents.

I don’t think the scenes with Hermione’s parents will take that much screen time. It could just be some quick flashbacks or something. Don’t panic about cutting out parts of the books until you know for sure what’s being done. I think that since film is a visual medium, it makes a lot more sense for Hermione to get all emotional about having to modify her parents’ memories if we actually get to see her parents, even if it’s just a few quick glimpses.

Nice news! I guess she’ll only be in a very small scene, perphaps in some sort of flashback. I’d like to know what Hermione’s mom actual name is. Someone should ask Jo about it.

It’s always amazing to see how differently the directors view the story lines compared to how we as readers see it.

I can’t wait to see how she looks! I hope she will be similar to Emma so we could really believe that she is her mother. . .

I don’t recall Mrs. Granger is being in Deathly Hallows, just Hermoine saying she had modified her parents memories.

Guess that gives us a hint that they’ll be adding material to the movie.

She looks really young to be a mum of a 18 year old daughter. But i could imagine hermione has a flashback maybe of her childhood… and then sending her mum and dad to Austrailia. It would be sweet at the end if they had like the grandparents at the station too!! :D

That’s pretty cool. I didn’t think they would have much of Hermione’s parents in the movie. :p

Wow. I’m really surprised they’re actually making time for Hermione modifying her parents’ memories in the film when it was mentioned in passing in DH.

I think this is one time as Potter fans where we can easily say that we wouldn’t mind if she didn’t read the books to understand her character. LOL. Anyway, it’s still kind of cool, though I’m trying to figure out what these scenes will look like. Are they really “scenes,” are they quick flashbacks, are they moving photographs? Could be interesting…
