Scores of readers let us know about a new interview with acclaimed author Stephen King, who has made some new comments regarding Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer. Speaking with USA Weekend, Mr. King compared the two authors and had some blunt things to say about the Twilight author Meyer. Quotage as follows:
Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking
directly to young people. ... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is
a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s
not very good."
"Somebody who’s a terrific writer who’s been very, very successful
is Jodi Picoult. You’ve got Dean Koontz, who
can write like hell. And then sometimes he’s just awful. It varies. James Patterson
is a terrible writer but he’s very very successful. People are
attracted by the stories, by the pace and in the case of Stephenie
Meyer, it’s very clear that she’s writing to a whole generation of
girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those
books. It’s exciting and it’s thrilling and it's not particularly
threatening because they’re not overtly sexual. A lot of the physical
side of it is conveyed in things like the vampire will touch her
forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just flushes all hot and cold.
And for girls, that’s a shorthand for all the feelings that they’re not
ready to deal with yet."

Thank you, Stephen King!
The thing that gets me is that die hard twilight fans actually admit that the writing is terrible. It’s a book. The writing is supposed to be what makes it good! That’s like saying it’s a good meal that takes bad!!

Oh thank you, thank you so much Mr. King! You’ve made my day, no… you’ve made my entire week! And don’t worry, I’ll be first among Potter fans standing between you and the Twilight brainwashees.

I am thrilled to discover that my opinion of all these authors and Mr King’s match. Maybe I have better literary instincts than I thought. Certainly better than my Patterson and Meyer loving friends think!

Meyer is pretty bad. You can go through Twilight and count mistake after mistake. The story may be interesting, but all she did was expand and change up the concept of vampires and create characters on the way that could have been expanded a lot more. Whereas J.K. Rowling created an amazing world, based on good writing, planning, learning, etc. Obviously we’re bias, but we’re right. =) lol

Well, I don’t think anyone is out there saying that Ms Meyer will win awards for literary merit. (She has a tendency to use long paragraphs where a well-chosen word or two would do……) Stephen King DID compliment her on her ability to keep an entire generation of younger readers enthralled, so he mixed his criticism with praise. And so the hooplah is about…..?

I couldn’t agree more with King – until now I thought I was in the minority, but perhaps not. Meyer’s writing is so bad that I can’t read it, I just cringe. I actually thought it was irresponsible of the publisher to release a book so poorly written. If Meyer needs to learn her craft, they should have given her the time to learn her craft and THEN write the book! Otherwise, it just reflects badly on everybody.
King wrote a book called `On Writing’ a few years back, which is well worth a read if you’re interested in writing fiction (perhaps she should grab a copy!)

Mr. King is entitled to his opinion. This is America, but I can not read his books. He scares me!!!!! I have not yet read the Twilight series yet, but want to. Do you think he was trying to jerk someones chain?

I would just like to commend Stephen King for having the courage to give an honest comment and not placate the rabid fans of Twilight by giving a more positive remark on Stephenie Meyer. I agree with him that, while Meyer’s stories are certainly fascinating and gripping, they lack the literary and writing merit to prominent in the works of J.K. Rowling.

I agree with this to some extent. Stephenie Meyer isn’t necessarily the best author around, but she isn’t bad either, and she did have a good story going for the three first of her books. It’s just sad that she chose to crap all over that with her fourth novel in the Twilight-series. I used to be a fan of hers, but though I don’t put myself in that category anymore it doesn’t mean I don’t like her books! Her two first in the Twilight-series are some of my all-time favorites, and anyone who’s read The Host would know she has talent — but she needs to work on flexibility and being able to change her storyline if it turns out that it isn’t gonna work. It doesn’t matter if that’s the ending she’s envisioned from day 1, if it doesn’t go with the rest of the books she needs to change it no matter what her feelings are on this. I imagine the difference between her first books and her latest installment to the series is what makes people say she’s a bad writer. However, with all this being said, and as I’m very tired I’m sure I could have expressed my opinions differently, there is no contest between Stephenie Meyer and JKR. Not at all. I like most of SMeyer’s books, but I LOVE ALL of JKR’s. And then you haven’t even gotten me started on grammar, buil-up, and so on!

I’ve loved what he’s said before about other topics, especially Potter. Now, you have every right to like what you like, but I got one paragraph into Twilight before I wanted to throw the book across the store.

I really hate it when people start comparing authors and their books, especially when they have absolutely nothing to do with one another. I don’t think Meyer is terrible writer (I actually think she is a wonderful author), she just has a different writing style and such that is perfect for her stories. Also, I don’t want all stories to feel the same because what would be the point of reading them.
Thank you, Stephen King!
