Harry Potter Novels Make USA Today List of Top Books of the 2000s

Novels from the Harry Potter series by author J. K. Rowling have been included in six of the ten spots on USA Today's list of the Top Ten Books of the 2000s.  Miss Rowling's novels placed along side the popular Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer and the Dan Brown novel The Da Vinci Code on this list.  The paper notes:

Human readers made it a big decade for novels about wizards, vampires and a Harvard symbologist. Two series for kids with "crossover" appeal to grown-ups —J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight— swept nine of the top 10 spots on USA TODAY's best-selling books of the decade. Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code is No. 2.

Rowling was a best seller before 2000, when third book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire [sic] sold a record 3 million copies its first weekend.

By 2007's release of the finale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, speculation about Harry's death (unfounded) rose to levels not seen since Charles Dickens' 19th-century serials. A record 8.3 million copies sold in a day.
The article goes on to make mention of the linked successes of the film adaptations of these novels, and quotes Publishers Lunch founder Michael Cader as saying, "They opened as big or bigger than the most anticipated movies, with pre-orders and opening-night parties, which spilled over to other books."

The full top ten list by USA Today is as follows:
1. Twilight, Stephenie Meyer
2. The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown
3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, J.K. Rowling, art by Mary GrandPre
4. New Moon, Stephenie Meyer
5. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, J.K. Rowling, art by Mary GrandPre
6. Harry Potter and the Half- Blood Prince, J.K. Rowling, art by Mary GrandPre
7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, J.K. Rowling, art by Mary GrandPre
8. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J.K. Rowling, art by Mary GrandPre
9. Eclipse, Stephenie Meyer
10. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, J.K. Rowling, art by Mary GrandPre

um, im sorry but is there a typo on that list? Why on earth is Stepheny Meyer’s Twilight above Jo and Harry Potter? im sorry but all the other lists had Jo at the top with statistics…Why is Twilight at the top when HP has sold so many times more? I said right in the article D.H. got over 8.5 million in the first 24 hours, and that hasnt happened in ages…so then why isnt it at the top!!!!!!!!!!????
I DONT THINK THIS LIST IS CORRECT!!! Im sorry Congrats to Jo, but she deserves number 1!

..Can’t wait to see future books on the list ten years from now? (Please? :D)

I’m sorry – I enjoy reading the twilight novels but they are a bit amature and not nearly in the same LEAGUE as books such as HP – and really Chamber of secrets should not be on it as it was not published in the 2000’s. – this is a silly list! rolls eyes in a patronising way

Of course, Twilight shouldn’t be at first place! But maybe Today’s editor-in-chief is its fan? :)))

That’s lame!! Twilight is just the flavor of the moment. The potter series will live on a hundred fold longer than the Twilight.

Harry Potter is forever.
The journey over the 7 books are almost breathtaking in their depth and execution and as such a part of life for the all time.
Having read the Twilight books and the Twilight movie i would have to say for me the movie was better than the book some thing i have not been able to say about the HP movies.

This list suck. Why that vampire fad is no. 1? Do we count sales or quality? Because whatever it is HP is beyond bigger and better than those wannabes.

On the bright side Harry and Jo got 6 spots ;)

I am pleased to see that Harry Potter filled so much of this list, although I strongly disagree with the decision to place Twilight, that trivial and temporal fad of sparkly sap and melancholic melodrama, in first place.

Well that USA Today list has official lost all its credibility for putting Twilight ahead of HP. I’ve heard that the last Twilight book was so bad that many who read it returned it. What an insult that Jo is behind that wanna-be Stephenie Meyer. That’s just the biggest joke!

I disagree that Twilight is a children’s book. But it’s awesome that 6 HP books are up there. All of them should be up there.
