Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on Oscar VFX Short List

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is one of the semifinalists of films in consideration for a VFX Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released this list of 15 films that are on the shortlist for Achievement in Visual Effects. In early January, this list will be narrowed to seven finalists for the Oscars which will be announced Tuesday, February 2, 2010. The list of contenders is as follows:

  • “Angels & Demons”
  • “Avatar”
  • “Coraline”
  • “Disney’s A Christmas Carol”
  • “District 9”
  • “G-Force”
  • “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”
  • “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”
  • “Sherlock Holmes”
  • “Star Trek”
  • “Terminator Salvation”
  • “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”
  • “2012”
  • “Watchmen”
  • “Where the Wild Things Are”

ahh! this is cool! not to be a debbie downer but i doubt hp will make it…there is some tough competition. the only scene i can think of that is really excellent as far as vfx is the cave scene. practically everything in that sequence deserves a vfx oscar.

I agree cbm. I was just watching some of the “In Movie” features on the HBP blu-ray, and it struck me how far these films have come since the beginning. Just the lighting alone in the cave scene is remarkable. It really does deserve a nomination. It just stinks it has to compete against Avatar, 2012, Coraline, etc.
