Variety: Dan Radcliffe to Return to Broadway in a Musical

Some possible big news this morning as Variety is reporting that "Daniel Radcliffe: will head the cast of an upcoming New York reading of 1961 tuner "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," marking the first musical turn for the "Harry Potter" star. The industry magazine then says "While producers could not be reached for confirmation, the reading is scheduled for December, with no other cast so far in place. Sources said plans for the production will be worked out based on the success of the reading."

Some background on the awarding winning musical is found in the Variety piece: "Written by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, "How to Succeed" chronicles the rise of a crafty window cleaner as he follows the advice of a self-help manual to connive his way up through the ranks of the World Wide Wickets Co. and get the girl in the process. Robert Morse created the role on Broadway and in the 1967 screen adaptation. The original production won seven Tonys, including musical, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1962, running for a healthy 1,417 performances. Matthew Broderick won a Tony for the lead role in a 1995 Rialto revival.

While that recent production might make it seem a little soon to start considering a major remount, the current economic turmoil, upheaval in the job market, and a host of fresh reasons to skewer the world of corporate America stand to make the cynical comedy resonate with today's audiences."

Please note, as exciting as this sounds, we are working to get confirmation on this and will update as soon as we can, stay tuned!

Thanks Gabrielle!

I have never wanted to see a Broadway play so badly in all my life. I hope his singing is up to par. He could be insanely good…I have heard wonderful things about Equis, naked parts not withstanding.

oooooh awesum :) but can he sing? hmm…. :S

Have people forgotten already that he sang at the start of Equus? He was fine actually. Not every musical role requires a fantastic singing voice. Rowan Atkinson in Oliver didn’t have one and he was brilliant, and Lions4thecup mentioned Johnny Depp, he was fantastic as Sweeney Todd as was Helena BC and neither of them had great voices. It depends on the role of course. I don’t know this musical but its subject sounds more like a man in the street type so I don’t expect he need to be operatic. Anyway he’ll work his butt off to achieve it. Like all the voice and accent training he did for Equus and DB and the hours and hours of underwater training for GOF.

This just makes me more impressed with him, which is what attracted me to him in the first place. He’s so enthusiastic that he wants to try everything, even what he doesn’t know and he pushes himself beyond his comfort zone to take on and succeed in projects that people don’t imagine him equipped for. Whatever he does he’s going to have a very varied and interesting career and life.

I thought I heard Dan say in many interviews when they asked if he would ever do a musical, he said NO. He was insistent that he can’t sing.

Oh, I would like to here how Dan sings! But maybe he’ll be just acting and the other one will be singing inseted of him, I mean Zas Efron wasn’t singing in the Hight school 1st movie-musical but than in the others he started singing for himself!
