Ajwc1 – just because i don’t like rupert’s acting doesn’t mean i dislike him. I find impossibly unengaging in interviews etc because he says anything and i don’t particularly think him goodlooking (nothing to do with him being ginger, just look how gorgeous damien lewis is), but having these opinions doesn’t mean i’m a hater. None of my posts have ridiculed rupert, and i dont think any fans do that much, i just had a problem with some views that were expressed. Also, in the UK we don’t really have ‘tv movies’ we have single dramas, which was of the calibre i was referring to.

I’m American and it’s true that doing TV films is kind of a stigma over here. However, we have to remember that it’s different in the UK. The BBC version of David Copperfield that Dan was in had more name actors than most feature films are lucky enough to have, and that seems to be the case with many BBC productions. Wasn’t Pride and Prejudice—the one with Colin Firth, which pretty much everybody cites as the best P&P—“just” a BBC miniseries? And does anybody honestly think that because Dan and Emma did My Boy Jack and Ballet Shoes, it means they couldn’t get any “real” offers? While they still have HP, the trio are just doing what appeals to them because they don’t need to worry about money or exposure. If Rupert were to do a TV film, I would be disappointed that it might not get him exposure, but I would still be interested and happy for him. And who’s to say that CB and WT, just because they weren’t made for TV, will be any better than a good TV film? Oh, and just so everyone knows, I am a huge Rupert fan—in fact, I’m obsessed with him, so of course I hope they will both be good and successful; I just think that we may be counting his chickens before they hatch.
I’m really excited to get more Rupert material next year, and it’s about freaking time. I just think that some of us, Rupert’s fans or not, are getting carried away. Until we see Rupert’s movies, all this means for now is that he was the one who had the time and inclination to take on more work during the break. If CB and WT are met with unexpected success and he is earth-shattering in them, then we’ll talk. But for right now, there is no reason at all to fight about this because all it means is that Rupert’s fans have more to look forward to in 2009, not that Rupert is doing better than anyone else or whatever these stupid fights are about.
“all it means is that Rupert’s fans have more to look forward to in 2009, not that Rupert is doing better than anyone else or whatever these stupid fights are about.”
Agree 100%!
I think part of the problem is that it’s been said that Rupert would not be able to land any roles (for various reasons) and Rupert fans are happy to see the detractors proven wrong.
Now we’ll have to see how the movies will fare.
Neither of the three are going to have an easy time separating themselves from their HP characters any time soon, and each one has a different way of going about it.
*And does anybody honestly think that because Dan and Emma did My Boy Jack and Ballet Shoes, it means they couldn’t get any “real” offers?

I don’t. I’m sure they get plenty of offers. I just don’t think their choices are as good as Rupert’s have been. I mean, the only people who have seen Ballet Shoes or My Boy Jack are in the UK or sought it out online. Now that Ballet Shoes is on DVD, more will see it, but when it first came out, it didn’t get much exposure at all. Rupert’s movies are feature films and one of them, Wild Target, will have more exposure than December Boys and My Boy Jack combined, just for the sake of who is in it and who’s distributing it and that it’s a comedy caper.
I do not look down upon Dan and Emma. I do wish that they would choose to do films that will give them a bit more exposure outside of HP. I would love to be able to see them in a film outside of HP on the big screen instead of on YouTube. Now, Emma’s TOD has a lot of exposure, but it’s just her voice, which isn’t the same. :(
Now, it seems that some anti-Rupert folks, do look down on him and for no reason that I can see. He gets the most abuse by fandom and so we fans of his who have witnessed a lot of it, tend to get a bit defensive. Basically, what I’m saying is that it seems that some people who don’t like Rupert want him to fail. Most Rupert fans (I won’t say all b/c I obviously don’t know all of them lol), want Dan and Emma to succeed too, we just want Rupert to get as much credit for his work as they seem to from fandom and the media.
Steph, I could hug you. You hit the nail on the wall. What you said was perfect!!!
Right now they are ALL doing well!!!
And the truth of the matter is, anyone of them will be extremely lucky to have another success as BIG as HP.
Personally, I’d love for Rupert to do indie films and Britcoms!!! I’m happy with that. I’m not expecting a Will Smith…… I’m hoping for a Greg Kinnear… :)
I think Dan’s made great choices. Equus certainly got him enough publicity, way more than any film he or Emma or Rupert have done, not including HP. And I say this as someone who thinks Rupert’s the best actor of the three.
I think they’ve all made great choices. Dan obviously enjoys doing theatre and he’s good at it; Rupert enjoys doing indie films and Emma… I don’t know, she seems to enjoy fashion, so maybe a fashion model. But my point is, NONE of them is better than the other. They’re all different and I find fans bickering over who’s done what “better” to be ridiculous.
“If Rupert were to do a tv movie, with all of these actors. Would you say (without having seen it), that they project was probably crap and that Rupert’s only doing it because he couldn’t get a feature length gig?”
I´m sorry, by why are you asking ME that question???
i´M NOT the one who said “TV movies was crap”….
I never said YOU said TV movies were crap..
However, the reason why I ASKED you that question, was because I wanted to know what YOU would say.
You say that tv movie are respectable (and I DON’T disagree, I have no problem with tv movies.)
But, I was asking if Rupert were to have done a tv movie, with respectable actors, without having seen the movie, would you automatically think the project was crap and that Rupert probably only did it because he couldn’t get a feature length gig?
No matter, you don’t have to answer…. shrugs

So true Jennifer. I love how they are different. That should be a good thing, because (as we can see) the fans are different. So, there’s someone for everyone. Rupert speaks to some of us, Dan speaks to some of us and Emma speaks to some of us.
In fact, I find it wonderfully interesting that these three thrown into a similar situation came out so perfectly different.
mollywobbles: just for your information My boy Jack was shown on American TV earlier this year..I don´t remember what channel (I´m not american)…But I do recall that the numbers of wievers was pretty high..Besides it´s also avaible on DVD
“Now, it seems that some anti-Rupert folks, do look down on him and for no reason that I can see”
Can you please name just ONE here, who´s “looking down on him”
Just because we´re some who don´t think “he´s the best looking guy or the best actor to walk this planet” doesn´t make us bashers
“But, I was asking if Rupert were to have done a tv movie, with respectable actors, without having seen the movie, would you automatically think the project was crap and that Rupert probably only did it because he couldn’t get a feature length gig?”
Why on earth do you think I would automatically calling the project crap….???
I don´t make comments about movies I haven´t seen

I don’t recall saying that you would. I was asking would you…

And I’m taking this is your answer? Thank you… :)
I don’t know about in other States, but it was on public television where I live.
My Boy Jack was on PBS public television On april 20th. It was okay, but I think if he was looking for exposure…pardon the pun…he didn’t get that until Equus.
TV movies in America are terrible and mean the demise of a career. If they are different in Britain…then good on anyone who does it. But if they did one in America, it wouldn’t be very good.
Emma has made choices that haven’t really showcased her talents, so I’m not even sure if she’s any good.
Rupert’s choices are Indie films with a wide distribution. Driving Lessons came to the theater in my town in the middle of the mountains. I think it was the best choice for his career…and he’s doing that again considering his costars, the directors, and the distributers of his next two movies.
Rupert doesn’t have to be engaging in an interview to be a talented actor. And he’s underused in HP. But if you watch Driving Lessons, you’ll see he definitely has the chops. And exposing himself in these films will cement that. Unless they are crap. Put considering who wrote both of these scripts, it sure doesn’t seem like they are crap.
These are all rational opinions, I don’t know why I’m getting so much heat for them. I think Rupert is the best actor out of the three, and that’s not an uncommon stance.
