Well the writer from the Herald might disapprove, but the Harry Potter books are indeed quite popular in her country, as The Scotsman reports that “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the most borrowed book in Scotland last year, according to the Public Lending Right office, which tracks loan data.” Others on the list of top borrowed books include those from Scottish crime writers Ian Rankin and Quintin Jardine. The BBC also reports this list is indicative of a change in borrowing habits of library patrons, noting “ten years ago romantic novels, and writers like Catherine Cookson, dominated the most-borrowed list.In more recent years crime and children’s writing has come to prominence.”
