Actor David Thewlis (Remus Lupin) was in Toronto, Ontario, Canada today for the International Festival of Authors, and gave his reaction to the news from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling regarding Dumbledore. The actor said that he was surprised, because while he was filming “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” director Alfonso Cuaron had the idea that Lupin was gay,”and he described my character like a ‘gay junkie’ .” At this link you can watch a short video interview with the actor who discusses his reaction and more. David Thewlis will be in Toronto again tomorrow to promote his new novel “The Late Hector Kipling” before returning to England to complete work on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

What ALL of these discussions show is how open-minded poeple in the entertainment industry are as compared with the general (American?) public who seem to be a lot more narrow-minded.

Jo Rowling would not have revealed to Alfonso Cuaron how Lupin turned out in the last book so he only had POA Lupin to go on. But Cuaron may have been joking – those in the industry also have a much more open-minded and sardonic sense of humour too.

We need to be more open-minded and relax a bit – gay people are just people who happen to be gay. Nothing more, nothng less.

And of course Lupin turns out not to be gay because he marries Tonks and has children

Pardonnez-moi!!? Does this mean Oscar Wilde wasn’t gay either because he had children. Sorry David, you are goofing on that point.

Funny btw, that some read the scene from “the Bride” as the proof Lupin was in love with Tonks, I got quite a reverse impression. I admit he really cared for her, but also he could not bear to live a lie.

But the basic thing about Lupin is that he is still desperate for real friends. Once he is offered friendship he goes all the way. Does not critize them for abhorrid behaviour, tries to live up to the standard of a husband. I think that treat of Lupin is deeper and more fundamental then being gay or straight.

IMO, this just goes to show that Cuaron, as artistically genial he might be, has absolutely no grasp on the actual book characters whatsoever. But I knew that already from his butchering certain characters in PoA. Yes, I know what Cuaron fans will say, I have no idea about film making. Admitted. But I know a bit about literature and characters, so thank you very much. I never ever saw Lupin as gay, sorry. And his love story with Tonks was quite believable for me. I wouldn´t have minded at all had JKR written him to be gay, but as I see it, she hasn´t.

And yes, David Thewlis absolutely rocks.

I always thought of Lupin as straight, actually… My reaction to Lupin/Tonks (...Tonkpin? Lunks?) was more – “Wait, Tonks? With a guy? Nooooooooooooooooo!” I challenge you to find one single Potter-reading lesbian who hasn’t thought “Hm, I wouldn’t mind HER being a real person!” But then, in DH I thought their relationship played out to be quite a believable one. Then again, like a lot of people have said: the world isn’t black and white. There are bisexual people out there.

I feel Cauron missed the point of Lupin – he is a recluse because of what he is – a werewolf. He fears relationships because of what he is..a werewolf. So its through this whole very difficult life, that he developed rather these little idiosyncrasies which Cauron and Thewlis interpreted as Gay. But I hope Thewlis continues his potrayal in the same way becasue he plays that character so brilliantly. Without saying anything, you can see a history of sufering in his eyes and a longing to be accepted but at the same time has a caring responsibility for Harry and others even if its to the expense of himself. JK didnt make Lupin gay because it didnt serve the the story of lupin and his werewolf drama- Tonks served a better story driven line. But she made Dumbledore gay (though not in an any explicit way) because that serves his story with Grindelwald. Personally, I find Lupin and Tonks story the most heart wenching shakesparean tragedy. But each of these indivual stories make for one grand epic saga.

I’d far rather have had Lupin turn out to be gay than that horribly characterized “romance” that turned Tonks into an obsessive whiner and Lupin into a jerk. Rowling should have stuck with her original plan and NOT gotten them together if she was going to do such a lousy job.

And Olivia’s right – Cuaron was quite vocal about bringing out the gay subtext in PoA and she didn’t say a word. In fact, she said that he’d inadvertently nailed a lot of things she was planning to bring out in later books! This is yet more evidence that she hadn’t planned the Tonks/Lupin subplot until after she’d decided to reprieve Arthur Weasley.

Finally – if David Thewlis really thinks that marriage and children is proof that someone is not gay, he is sadly mistaken. A lot of closeted gays and lesbians do exactly that, only to make themselves and their spouses miserable. I don’t see any reason at all why this wasn’t the case with Lupin and Tonks, considering that he seemed unhappy with the marriage, though not with Teddy.

I always read Lupin as gay too, whether that was a literal interpretation, or of his werewolf status being similar to that of a gay man in the Muggle world. And Tonks is obviously a big lesbian, so it was appropriate that they ended up together. Too bad they didn’t live long enough to discover their true selves!

And to those who are all mad and say, “of course Lupin isn’t gay!!”, how many of you would’ve jumped to Dumbledore’s “defense” if he had been outed by anyone but JKR?

Wha-wha? I mean, I think most of us like the idea of Lupin being…slashy, but not a junkie. X_x He’s, like, the anti-junkie. The voice of reason (if he gets the nerve up) in a crowd of troublemaking teenagers. =)

Oh please! Just like not everyone is hetero..not everyone is gay either. I totally saw Lupin and Tonks together since the fifth book when Lupin introduced her to Harry. I don’t know, there was something about their dynamic. Who knows, maybe Remus and Tonks were Bi? Anyway, I never thought Lupin was Gay from POA, and that is my favorite HO book. I just thought he was a incredibly lonely man who really missed is friends.

I think the “gay junkie” = “werewolf on wolfsbane” is not so much of a stretch. Cuaron may have just needed a term to describe the character to Thewlis.

Also if Cuaron as vocal about it, nothing stopped Rowling from correcting him in private. She did so to the scriptwriter of HBP writing a note on the script about Dumbledore, but once the question was asked in public, she didn’t hold back the answer.

The video wouldn’t play for me,thanks though.

I can understand why Cauron might have thought that but thought Dumbledor was the more appropriate charater , his being just made sense.

Cuaron didn’t say lupin was a gay junky, he just suggested playing him like a gay junky. And let’s be honoust… it worked. Ik love alfonso cuaron.(Not in a gay manner though)

Who cares if a character is gay? I don’t see what the big ta-doo is…I’m not going to like or dislike anyone due to their sexual orientation.

Lol, I was sure Alfonso was taking that angle in PoA! Sirius and Lupin “bickering like a married couple” ... it was clear to me who Alfonso shipped! Yep, also see no reason why it couldn’t have been Lupin/Sirius then Lupin/Tonks.

Remus/Tonks could have been decently done, could have been convincing. It wasn’t, unless you are a very forgiving reader. It was badly timed, pitched, scripted, and executed. By the end of the book I didn’t even care when they died, which is a shame, as I always liked Remus, but the characterization was so terrible and full of gaps that I just wanted them gone. It’s obvious that JK just pushed Remus and Tonks together because she was tired of the Remus/Sirius shippers and wanted to shut them up. (Ha, nice try.)
