People are actually surprised by the Dumbledore revelation?
It wasn’t something I ever thought too much about while reading the series (granted I do wonder about characters’ personal lives when reading) but as soon as the relationship between he and Grindelwald was introduced in Book 7, it seemed a very natural progression. More subtextual than anything.
This doesn’t change who the character is throughout the series. And it’s foolish to think so. The morals and values the character of Dumbledore espouses remain intact.
And face facts, everyone. As a writer, Rowling most likely has very in depth facts on her main characters—and that will include many things that would never make it into the series.
I, for one, enjoy hearing about the author’s take on the lives of her creations.

It’s surprising I must admit, but more proof that Dumbledor WAS only human…not sure how I feel about this :/ Still really cool to get some answers!

Okay. I was as shocked as anyone else was at hearing this character twist from Jo. But really what difference does it make? I don’t think about people (or characters) that way in the first place. I had this vision of that scene in “The Fugitive” where Tommy Lee Jones has Harrision Ford trapped at the overflow pipe at the dam and I hear Ford yelling at Jones “Dumbledore was GAY!!!” and Tommy Lee Jones saying “I don’t care!” THAT’S me. I’m Tommy Lee Jones. People tell me that they are gay and I really DON’T care. I either like them or not. Orientation has nothing to do with it.
As for some comments that DD might have come-on to Harry…well, that would make him a pedofile which is completely different and pretty much unrelated. So let’s not even go there, because there is no “there” there.
Besides, everyone is missing the REALLY BIG news that Neville married Hannah Abbott! Yay Neville, Yay Hannah!

When I reread the first HP novel for my british novel class, I told my classmates I thought Dumbledore was gay. I even wrote my final paper on that. He’s constantly being described effeminately and you never get a real sense of his sexuality. It’s awesome Rowling confirmed this news; HP desperately needed one of it’s major characters to be gay.

Not only the fanfic, but the yaoi fanart community will explode too!
...I can’t believe I just typed that.

oh my god firebird..puting ..pictures in my head i dont want to see..

And how is it wrong ot be gay..thats so steryotypical..and just horrible

I am truly shocked I never would have thought Albus to be a homosexual. If Jo wanted to help the Gay community or give a positive light to gay people then she would have mentioned he was gay in the series. There are people that don’t get on and read Jo’s interviews or go to fan sites. Unless this makes it to the nightly news, some aren’t going to know about it.

I have to say something else because it’s really nagging me:
Most of the people here who are bitching about how the books are ruined now that you know a character is gay, most of those people have probably defended the books to the DEATH when religious people attack it for being immoral and the work of the devil.
Now, that we know a character is gay, suddenly those same people are turning into said religious people and going on and on about how wrong it is. Can anyone say ‘hypocritical’?

On a serious note, I must say I am SO PLEASED. I have many gay friends and Jo has done an amazing thing for them. It’s spectacular what she’s done.
Now, what I really want to know is which one of the girls in the series is a lesbian. I have always had my little fantasy about some Ginny/Hermione action, but that’s a special treat for me. :)
But for real….do you guys think there are any lesbian characters in the series? Maybe Katie Bell?....
I genuinely think this is important stuff. For a personality of her grandeur, who has access to the enrichment of so many young people, and had so much influence, to declare something like this about a beloved character, is a huge step for human rights. Bravo Jo, Bravo.

i think this is brilliant. it shows that sexuality shouldn’t be a problem with people. dumbledore was an amazing and respected wizard. no one reading the books is ever aware he is gay. why? because it doesn’t matter. we respect him. we love him. we see how much he works to help others. the fact that he is gay is just something about him. it didn’t stop him from getting somewhere in life and it didn’t stop people from liking him.
i hope that children who read harry potter can see this, and learn that being gay isn’t really any different than being straight. it’s great. amazing. i love jk rowling.

There is no danger in Dumbledore’s sexual orientation “influencing kids to be gay.” Despite what THEY tell you, you don’t decide to be gay. It is NOT a choice.
The comments that express concern that DD came onto Harry because DD is gay are just… get some education, people. PLEASE. Pedophilia and homosexuality are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS, again, despite what THEY tell you.
As for why J.K. had to reveal it… because she wanted to? For a lot of writers, characters don’t exist in the vaccuums of their respective storylines. They have backgrounds and experiences and relationships that aren’t relevant to the plot. They’re still developed. If, in the course of the event, the subject came up, why would she NOT reveal it? She’s revealing a piece of one of her own creations.
Just my two cents.

thank you ..’Just Someone’ i completely agree. you stole the words right out of my mouth

Shep: I know, that’s the sad part. Dumbledore is gay and despite there being no gay context in the book, the Christians are going to flip their lids. And this is coming from someone religious.
