Reader Richard Blaber pointed out comments in this Daily Telegraph review of the stage version of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials that seem to indicate, at least from the writer’s point of view, that Harry Potter books are primarily for children:

Whenever I see adults reading Harry Potter on the train, I feel like tapping them politely on the shoulder and saying: “Come on, you’re old enough to graduate to Philip Pullman now.”

While J K Rowling’s books about the boy wizard seem increasingly derivative, formulaic, flatly written and ridiculously long, Pullman’s magnificent His Dark Materials trilogy offers both hours of spellbound wonder and sudden moments of deep emotion that cut at the heart like the subtlest of knives.
